This thread is for stupid GAMING questions that don't deserve their own thread

For platformers, do you prefer using WASD or the arrow keys? Any particular reason?

I'm wrapping my head around game programming and realized I don't know the norm.

If I have to use the mouse at all then WASD. If I don't have to use the mouse at all I prefer arrow keys.

How does preordering a game work? I've never done it, so yeah.

You put down some money to reserve a copy of a game to be picked up on or around release day. Most retailers require a $5 minimum down payment, but you can pay as much as you want, and even pay off the game entirely before it releases. Some retailers even offer incentives such as free DLC exclusive to that retailer for preordering from them.

It depends where you live I guess. I've pre-ordered plenty of games and never paid a dime for it. In the US you can for instance use Amazon if you don't want to pay in advance.

Ah, is there like a limit to how close to release date you can preorder? (Obviously I get that you probably can't preorder the day before launch)

PX5 owners - whats the best settings for The Last of Us? The menu options are default, Dolby Pro Logic II, and Dolby Digital 5.1. Should I keep it on default? Also, what setting are you using in the headphone itself? I think I've been keeping it on preset 2.

Is dishonored any good? I've heard that is basically deus ex HR but steam punk, is that right? Because i love deus ex HR
I guess it can be described that way, yeah. And I think it's good, but you can flip a coin on whether or not others reading the thread agree.

I didn't care for it at first but after about an hour or two, something clicked and I loved it. Very fun game once you figure out the controls / magic system. You can feel like a real bad ass when you start doing everything right.

It mostly depends on the game and the retailer. I've been able to preorder the "big name" games a few days from release and still get a copy on launch day, but that may be due to the sheer amount of copies they receive. More niche games may need to be preordered at least a few weeks from release, since the retailer will most likely only order as many as they think they can sell. For example: one of the GameStops near me is still taking preorders for Shin Megami Tensei IV, because they are getting a few more copies to sell in addition to the ones that are already reserved. However, a locally owned game shop stopped taking preorders for SMT IV a few days ago because they were only ordering enough for those that had preordered.

Should buy a 3rd party memory card for GameCube? I had some bad experience with faulty generic PS1 & PS2 cards, are GC ones any better?

(sorry for the double post)

Will any USB Headset work with a 360?

For Voice chat, I am pretty sure it has to go through the controller port, the USB can be for Power though if needed. If you are talking about headphones, then USB would be the power source, then you would have to use other cables for sound. Digital audio via Toslink, or just plugging the red and white cables into the headphones cables (if applicable) is the most common way I know of. Not sure how HDMI works.

If the headphones have voice and game sound, then you should have a voice chat cable/puck that goes from headphones to controller port. Then you have USB power and sound cables that separate off near the USB. This is how my Wired Turtle Beaches I used worked, and how most headphones I have seen worked. I use the Astro Mixamp and some PC headphones right now. I get game audio via Toslink plugged from digital audio to mixamp, and voice chat from mix amp to controller. Mixamp processes and feeds it all to headphones and I can adjust game and voice audio independently with the mixamp.

I've had my save files corrupted when using one with my Wii, but no problems when using it with my GameCube.

Is there a thread for hardware issues? (In particular, I have a question about HMDI cables connecting my desktop with my TV)

Can you use HBO Go app with a one month Xbox Live Gold sub you can buy from Amazon or Bing rewards?

I thought I remember the one month free trials have some restrictions, but I am not sure if this means all one month Live subscriptions.

Where should I start with the Trauma series?

I say start with the first one on DS. I enjoyed Second Opinion, but the touch screen offers a level of precision you just can't get with the Wiimote. That and I found it far easier to switch instruments accurately with the touch screen over the analog stick.

Original art style was better too imo

I believe Gamecube controllers work with SNES / N64 Wii Virtual Console releases. Do they handle well or am I better off buying an actual pro controller?

Keep in mind that you can't change button configs on the Wii VC, which makes some SNES games almost impossible to play. For example Donkey Kong Country or Super Mario World have Jumping on B and running on Y or X, which is really awkward on a GCN controller.

Some titles feature in-game button config menus, like Super Metroid. Those work well of course.

You are better off buying a Pro Controller in my opinion. Playing a SNES game with a GameCube controller?...No, don't do that to yourself.

It's a matter of preference. I usually prefer the GCN controller to the CC, and I also have a Hori Digital controller that works pretty well too.

I suck at stealth games. Should I buy watch dogs for ps4, or hold off until some reviews and impressions?

I already have killzone and bf4 pre-ordered.

Also, is an extra controller for ps4 a necessity? I rarely have friends over.

Why does the PS4 Planetside 2 trailer have lots of Physx in it? The GPU doesn't even support gpu accelerated Physx, so couldn't it only come from the weak CPU? (unless it was simply shown on PC and there was no intention of actually having all those particles in the PS4 version)

Supporting both would strike me as the safer option. For me it depends somewhat on how many auxiliary controls are needed. If I need to use a lot of controls *other* than movement, I'd prefer to use my right hand for them.

Also, I'd throw "up for jump" versus "Separate button for jump" into the discussion. Fair arguments either way on that one.

(Well, in real terms, I'd use a gamepad, but that's not helpful for your query!)

Now that Bluray has become the standard for games next-gen, will we see PC games start shipping on Bluray discs or are we going to start seeing multiple DVD games still (4+ discs)?

Games are inevitably getting bigger and now that Bluray is on both next gen consoles, while PC games still continue to be sold at certain retailers in physical form, what happens to DVDs?

Many, many PCs do not have blu-ray drives in them. My guess is the games will have some data on them, and then the rest will have to be downloaded.

Quick question, does anyone know if the wireless stereo headsets available for the PS3 now will work with the PS4? I'm not talking the Elite headphones with the rumble, I mean the original wireless headphones.

I don't want to spend the money on them only to not be able to use them with the PS4.

More RAM only means more textures and whatnot getting loaded, right? All over those Youtube videos of Killzone are people saying that since the PS4 has more RAM, Killzone will go from being 30 FPS to 60 FPS. Obviously that's not how it works, but since the RAM doesn't do anything to make the GPU / CPU stronger, it will only benefit the amount of stuff loaded into memory, right?

I have downloaded Monster Hunter Ultimate on my 3DS to my 2GB SD card.

I then had to go out and buy a new 12GB SD card and use that to download Animal Crossing to.

But now I have to swap SD cards if I want to play either game! This is the same as physical copies!!

How can I put both games on 1 SD card? I tried to copy the SD card contents from one to another but it didn't work.

Please help.

Have you tried downloading it again? I'm not sure if that sounds really dumb or not.

Has anyone here beaten the last boss of Shinobi PS2 on Super, the hardest difficulty mode?

This guy:

I've played this fight for over twenty hours spread across the last week and it is a total brick wall for me, and I play a good amount of tough action games. This boss fight just seems like it's a luck-based thing all the way through. Any advice?

I bought one of the Neo Geo USB pads for PS3 in anticipation of Ketsui at the end of the month, and I just tried using it with Espgaluda (backwards compatible J-PS3) and it didn't seem to recognise it? Will it not work with PS2 games?

if i want to buy a used 360 which version of the system is the safest to buy?

i don't want to buy it and then get RROD a month later.

Having just recently started playing games on my Laptop, I'm curious about the differences between all these fancy settings. FXAA, MLAA? Which is better, why is there a distinction? What the heck does SSAO do? Why should I care about Tessilation?

Having been a console gamer since like forever, all of these "options" are completely new to me.

The distinction between FXAA and MLAA is the difference in techniques to eliminate aliasing or jaggies. The short answer is using FXAA is less of a performance hit but it's not as good as MLAA. Try both and look at edges to see if the quality of AA solution is worth the performance hit.

SSAO basically adds shadowing to corners and edges where things overlap to add more depth to the scene.

Tessellation is a technique that procedurally generates more detail in objects. Personally, I don't think the performance hit in both SSAO and Tessellation is worth it on my computer.

The best thing to do is just start flipping switches and see what works for you. If you don't know what to look for (because some of these changes might not be immediately apparent) just google the option to get a rough idea what exactly is changing.
