This thread is for stupid GAMING questions that don't deserve their own thread

It depends on the game and what the developer is going for.

Certainly, no game ever benefits from a story when the developer doesn't care about telling a story.

But I know you were just being an ass and weren't expecting an answer.

I was being honest. Some games, like RPGs, need a story, but shooters, third person action games, etc. could probably save a lot of money but not including cut scenes, and I don't think they would sell any less if the cut scenes were taken out.

My laptop is pretty old, I was wondering if the specs would be able to run Half-Life 2 okay. It has a 1.5 GHz dual core processor, 1 GB of RAM, and no real graphics card. I'm not looking for anything fantastic by any means, but would this at least be able to run it?

From the Half-Life 2 Steam Page

PC System Requirements

Minimum: 1.7 GHz Processor, 512MB RAM, DirectX® 8.1 level Graphics Card (Requires support for SSE), Windows® 7 (32/64-bit)/Vista/XP, Mouse, Keyboard, Internet Connection

Recommended: Pentium 4 processor (3.0GHz, or better), 1GB RAM, DirectX® 9 level Graphics Card, Windows® 7 (32/64-bit)/Vista/XP, Mouse, Keyboard, Internet Connection

You might be able to lower the graphical settings to make it run, I don't know for sure. Check out Half-Life 2 on Can You Run It? to check your specific configuration.

I am looking for a way to whiten my Dreamcast again. Through the years, the plastics have taken a sickly yellowish hue. How can I restore them to glorious white? With alcohol maybe? I don't want to use something that will melt the plastic!

The strange thing is that the modem has remained sparkly white like day 1! It looks really out of place now.

More details please. Pretty much any Core/Core 2 Duo should be good enough.
And what's the graphics? Is it just Intel integrated?

Unortunately I think that the plastic itself has yellowed, much like many SNES units.
It's something to do with how they mixed the batch of plastic they used.

Are there any complete video walkthroughs of Dead Rising out there? Also, is it possible, in practice, to beat the story in one go (not in one sitting) without restarting with a higher level and still see everything/save everyone?

While it's not *quite* what you asked, I got through the game by playing through repeatedly until I could reliably get past the
Clown fight
, opening up the
teleport between buildings so you don't need to travel through the central plaza
. That was about... I dunno, maybe half an hour to an hour of content repeated five/six times? It sounds a lot, but once I'd gone through that grind (which I enjoyed, it didn't consciously *feel* like a grind), I was able to play through continually to the good ending; it didn't require any further restarts.

I didn't *quite* save everyone, but I really didn't miss many; I felt I'd ended up feeling satisfied at that point with what I'd done.

Thanks :) Every bit helps. I'm asking because of a paper I'm gonna be writing. I have played the game and seen almost everything in it but it was a long time ago so it's hard to remember all the small details :) I really should replay it so I don't miss anything, but the disc is like 300 miles away :lol

Xenogears on PSN - should i buy it? my money is kinda tight right now, and i just bought a few Transmetropolitan books yesterday so i don't really deserve to treat myself to anything today but i feel a sudden hankering to play Xenogears for the first time. i could just stick with replaying Chrono Trigger forever, mix in some Nier and be happy with RPGs for the time being, but the consumer and gamer in me is saying BUY! BUY! BUY! advise me, gaf.

bonus question: is there an RPG on PSN i should be getting instead?

Alright, On my PS3, I can no longer compare trophies with a friend, or synch my trophies list, what is the deal? It's gets stuck and I get an error message around 10-15% every time! What is the deal?

Xenogears is definitely worth picking up on PSN! If money is tight that $9.99 will give you some bang for your buck and keep you occupied for awhile. As for other RPGs on PSN... If you've never played Final Fantasy IX, I would recommend picking that up (if not now, then some time in the future).

How long has this been happening to you? I've had the same thing occur to me before, but after a day or two everything synced fine again. Maybe PSN is just having some troubles at the moment.

That site gave me a yes, so I should be good. Thanks!

I have 1300 points on my Wii. I'm saving 800 for Final Fantasy III and I'm assuming that's going to come out on Monday, though I know it might not. What should I spend the remaining 500 on in the meantime? I currently own Bubble Bobble, Kirby's Adventure, and Mega Man II - IV. (I think those are the only things I have that are 500 points.) Suggestions? Virtual Console or WiiWare is fine.

This has been happening for a couple months now. I deleted about 600 messages out of my inbox and about the same out of my sent box, just to make sure it was not from a memory glitch, but that didn't help.

This isn't a stupid gaming question, but I don't want to really launch a new thread for it. But what's the best golf game for Move.

Dragon's Curse is better but its 600 points lol, so get the 'other' version.

This just started happening to me today. My Xbox 360 disc tray keeps opening and closing constantly, even when I turn the console off? What the fuck is this? The only way I can get it to stop is to unplug the power. Do I have to send it in? Or is there any fix I can do? I seriously do not want to pay to send it in.

My buddy has been loving The new Tiger Woods, but also said the John Daly game was fun, but definately not as fine tuned as Tiger.

There's a demo for Half Life 2. Try it out!

I don't think I want it if I can just buy a better version for a dollar more another time. :P

Its not that much different really, I was happy with the Master System one for yeeeears before discovering there even was a system called the TG16 (never came out in my country) lol. TG16 is the one to pick if you had 600 points though.

Wonder Boy in Monster Land is another option, its older, and more arcade-y (being an arcade game, funny that) which makes it more challenging but still great fun.

My fourth Xbox 360 just stopped reading discs and has had several errors which indicate that it's on the verge of total failure. I've decided not to replace it.

I have a Slim PS3 (no BC) and a Wii.

I'm contemplating one of the following as a third system.

-3DS
-DS (some model, haven't decided)
-PSP
-PS2

Here are the positives and negatives of each, for me.

The 3DS is ridiculously expensive compared to the other three, but on the other hand will get games for years to come.

The DS is the second cheapest of the bunch, and has a huge library, but is wrapping up.

The PSP is obviously experiencing its own market problems, but on the other hand it's been around a while and has quite a few games I have not played. Since I already have a PS3 it would be somewhat of a complementary system to my huge library of PSN games.

I love the PS2, having owned one before. But then again, I've played most of its best games. Wouldn't mind playing some of them again, plus the ones I hadn't touched and rebuilding my library. It's super cheap too. The only hesitation is that I've been there, done that.

Here's the last kicker which affects the handhelds. I play everything at home, and do not have a Wifi connection.

A sensible fellow would just wait, but I'm really anxious to throw this dying beast of a 360 in the closet.

What should I do?

I'd go with the 3DS over the DS if you think you'll eventually buy a 3DS anyway. It basically has a DSi in it, since it can do everything a DSi can do.

I can't recommend a PSP to anyone who doesn't already have a DS and the PSP2 or NGP or whatever isn't going to be out for a while. :P

Okay, thanks for the advice. Hmm...may wait a little bit, but you do make a good point.

How the FUCK do you properly turn off your PSP?

I've had that thing for years and still haven't figured a way to turn it off with a success rate of more than 50%.

Hold the lever up for about 6 seconds. It actually takes less, but I do it that long just to be sure.

You really have to hold the switch up for some time. Not the best design.

When developing for it, we had to carefully explain that the reason the system went into sleep mode after the testers went out of lock mode was because they were pushing that switch too enthusiastically and going into sleep mode of their own accord. It's *really* fiddly to go out of lock without entering sleep.

On a similar note, I had a dev unit which got stuck with lock on no matter where the switch actually was. It took *ages* to diagnose exactly what the problem was, since all I could tell was that the buttons weren't working.

I hated the PSP's sleep/lock switch with a passion.

That switch is one of the reasons the PSP sucks as an mp3 player. You have to be a freaking surgeon to take it out of lock mode without putting it to sleep.

I'm currently waiting on buying a 3DS until they release a "slim" version or at least some new colors (that red 3DS shown at expos is just too hot). To get a sense of how long of a wait I'm in for, can anyone tell me how long it was from the release of the DS to when they released new colors and the DSlite?

Hopefully this doesn't up a can of worms, but I'm playing TF2 for the first time (all of the Orange Box actually...didn't have a personal PC for 5 years or so)

Which character is best for:

a n00b:
a relatively experienced player:
an expert:

And why?

i have asked this question before - but i don't think i got an answer.

Why is it that, in 1080p, the xbox UI is sharp, but all game screenshots are incredibly blurry? Surely MS could afford the bandwidth of slightly higher res pictures, no? Doesn't sound like a good idea for sales. Is it just my setup? My TV is not particularly big, but it's still very obvious how ugly those shots are.

Nintendo DS hardware release dates in North America
Original DS - November 21, 2004
DS Lite - June 11, 2006
DSi - April 5, 2009
DSi XL - March 28, 2010

Almost all games for the 360 run in a significantly lower resolution. Upscaling them to 1080P would most likely give them a softer look. It might also be poor image compression. When the game is running at full speed it's a lot more difficult to notice the poor image quality.

Alright, my cousin's offering me an Xbox 360 for free, but here's the catch: it's died multiple times and it is the 360 model that existed prior to the Jasper models.

I was saving up for one of the newer Xbox 360s, but since this came up, I'm not sure what to do here. Help me please, GAF.

And thank you in advance!

So I got this problem with my Xbox 360 S. For some reason the past month or so it will connect to live and disconnect about a minute afterwards. My laptop and 3DS connect fine with no drops what-so-ever so I don't know what's going on. Would clearing the cache help? And so how would I go about doing that?

Falcon was the one that came before Jasper. And Zephyr is the oldest one i think. I mean if it died multiple times, i wouldnt expect anything good from it for a long time but as its free maybe you should get it. So with the money you saved, you may get a PS3 if you don't have one or fuck it all and get a 360 Slim.

Yeah, I was thinking that. I believe it's a Falcon, IIRC. I think I might just get a Slim based on that observation.

Thank you very much for the advice. :)
