This thread is for stupid GAMING questions that don't deserve their own thread

Posted this in a thread about PS2 classics last week but didn't get an answer so hoping someone can help me out here

I was just on holiday in the states and grabbed a $20 card from Walgreens so I can pick up Fire Pro Wrestling (since it looks like it'll never see the light of day in EU). Just wondering - do I pay sales tax on US store purchases and if so, can I avoid doing so by setting a particular state as my home like with digital Amazon purchases?

Will be a shame if FPR costs me just over $10.64 and I'm stuck with $9.36 on my account or something stupid like that

Is there anyone here well versed on the PSP 1000? I got one that won't read discs, but the drive spins and the laser lights up and moves back and forth; it just won't load. Any ideas?

It can me a lot of different things for a lot of different companies. Generally speaking, most of the features that are planned have been implemented, graphics are beginning to take a more final shape, and bugs are beginning to be crushed. Prior to that, a lot of people consider the alpha stage being when the game is generally completable in some form, but it may have a ton of bugs and lots of missing stuff. Others consider the alpha just the first stage of the game, it could have a level and be considered an alpha.

Lately, a lot of companies will release a "beta" shortly before release, which is basically a multiplayer test to test servers or some basic balance stuff, last minute changes really.

Our structure was approximately:

Alpha: Sufficient fully playable levels to adequately demonstrate most key gameplay mechanics. Most basic mechanics in, the more bespoke ones others would be developed using the alpha assets to test.
Beta: All content exists, although it may not be in final form. All gameplay mechanics implemented, but need bugfixes.

There was a running joke at work that we would literally hit beta a day before our official release deadline.

Think i'll go for the latter.

Wasnt sure if the Beyond Good & Evil I was playing through was mine or "rented". Thanks!

I don't think Beyond Good & Evil was ever a PSN+ freebie, so you had to have bought it (or downloaded it from someone you account share with, if you do that).

I only know of Zelda 1 doing that, and that's for the PAL version, not sure if it's the same for other versions.

Pretty much any game that made use of battery back RAM (that is, any game with a save feature) did that, although not all of them stated as such in game. Just poking through a few of my old NES game manuals, it's listed in all of them that holding reset before hitting power is recommended for game and system safety.

And since the initial question wasn't answered (why hold reset before hitting power), there are several presumed reasons, but this is the assumed correct one:

Has there been an official release date given for the PS4?

I came back from preordering one at Best Buy and I noticed their system says release: 11/30/2013.

MS is rumored to be releasing the first week of November, so I'm also wondering if one hasn't been officially set, what is the rumored date?

There isn't a release date for the PS4 yet although it will probably be announced during Gamescom later this month. Most people are expecting it to be released before Black Friday (Nov 29).

Ah, I see... thanks!

I have another question non Sony related.

I'm a Steam n00b. I bought KOTOR today (my first ever Steam game) and tried to play it. When it opens on my screen, the screen is black, except for a tiny box that only displays part of the games screen. I looked for the game so I can alter the settings and can't find it on my drive. I wasn't sure if it's ran directly through Steam, since it did the download, but I tried looking for option to change the display and couldn't find them. What am I doing wrong here?

Is there anyone who has played The Last of Us who dislikes Uncharted, Tomb Raider and other linear action adventure games like that?

I want to know if you enjoyed it because I am very tempted to buy it but simply don't trust the reviews.

I enjoyed both TLOU and Uncharted but they don't play anything alike. Uncharted and Tomb Raider are much more blockbustery and over the top. TLOU is more deliberate and slow paced.

The Steam version of KOTOR is not great. I ended up downloading another version so I could play it in high resolution without any weird graphical issues. In general it's better to get older games from GOG although they don't have KOTOR.

I think the Uncharted games are good, but nothing special. The Last of Us was better although if you really dislike Uncharted then it's probably not for you. The core mechanics are similar even though the setting and characters are changed.

Thanks, is there many bits where you are not doing much, just kind of taking part in the story? I can take some of that but not too much. I would class too much as like the first few hours of AC3.

Crap, now I feel like I just wasted $10.

I enjoyed TLOU but didn't really like Tomb Raider. Though to be honest, I got a bit tired of TLOU gameplay at the end (game is quite long). Story ans characters are infinitely better than in TR though, that's for sure.

Thanks. I'm certain it's not that, because it was already out when I read the thread in question. The game I'm trying to remember the name of was far more action focused, rather than a point and click adventure too. Good thinking from "choices and consequences" though!

(Really shouldn't share a PC!)

You are talking about "Human Element". It revolves around survivors in the zombie apocalypse. Players must choose from three different classes (Action, Intelligence and Stealth) and three different identity profiles: Survive Alone, Survive with a Partner and Survive with a Young Child.

I guess it's all just speculation anyway, but I might as well ask. What are the chances of a Bioshock Infinite complete edition being released that has all the DLC included? Just need reassurance if I should buy now or wait

Is it possible to buff the scratches out of a Vita screen? Just picked up a used system and it has a few scratches and even though I can't overly tell when I'm playing, it bugs me. Someone had suggested this stuff:

neogaf help me out. i'm playing a game and i have to solve a puzzle, the problem is that i have to press stars in the following order

purple, blue, yellow, green and red.

sadly colors are not known to my eyes and quite frankly colors are a concept which i do not believe in , so would you gladly help me out and point me to which one i have to press? i tried to brute force it but no luck.

Here's a question:

If I buy Ghosts for my PS3, will that info convert to an Xbox One since they said that info translates to the next gen.

What email do you use with PSN? It could possibly work that way, but I think it's brand to brand. Meaning Xbox 360 to XbOne and PS3 to PS4.

Did you ever sign up for their site or for Elite or something?

I recently got an original Xbox and PS2 (I mostly play games on my pc), and I was looking for a game similar to Mario Kart. I saw that there are two Crash Bandicoot kart games out there, but there are lots of mixed reviews.

So, are there any 4-player kart games, for PS2 or preferably Xbox, out there that are worth getting--for parties/drinking games?

Crash Team Racing - on the PS1, but your PS2 should be able to play it - is probably the best I can think of. I genuinely cannot think of *any* Kart games on the Xbox (There must be some, surely, but none spring to mind!). Cel Damage is possibly worth noting, although it's closer to Twisted Metal than a racing game.

Edit: Midtown Madness 3, I guess, although I'm not sure if that's 4-player splitscreen. And it's not really karty.

Should I consider getting valkyria chronicles 2 for my vita? I have played the first but I wasnt the biggest fan of it. should I give the series another go with this entry? Only reason im considering it is because its on special now

Well, what didn't you like about it?
VC2 has much shorter missions, but you have to complete more of them, and maps repeat frequently, even if troop placements change. It can also get quite grindy.
On the other hand, you have much more flexibility in your squad choices and tank customisation, and the class upgrade system lets you specialise your units more to your liking.
VC2 also cuts back on the main storyline in favour of more squad characterisation, which, combined with the high school setting, almost gives it a slice-of-life feeling.

I cant remember to be honest, i played it in 09, got upto mission 5 and just had enough.
It could have been that the missions were too long, or maybe Im just not that used to SRPG's

CTR for the PS1 is definitely the best, BUT i really liked the Crash Nitro Kart for the PS2

Hello, I have some technical questions about gaming:

1. While dedicated servers are better for some stuff, it doesn't means the game needs more servers and the online services can be shutdown sooner than with non-dedicated servers?
2. What exactly are the benefits of the dedicated servers for me, a casual FPS gamer. I like to play all kind of games so i just play few time the FPS and I never noticed anything bad.
3. I have read a lot about graphiccal issues like screen-tearing, jaggies, alisasing, FSAA, etc, and I don't quite understand what are those things. Someone have a picture or video where these stuff is noticeable?
4. Framerate-drops refers to "lag"? I remember while playing Ratchet games when I had lot of bolts on screen the game lagged and started to going slooow. This is an example of framerate-drops right?

If anyone can help me to understand all this, thanks!

1. Correct. Dedicated servers cost money and unless you allow users to set up their own servers for free (e.g. Warhawk did this) they will be shut down at some point. Allowing both dedicated servers are peer-to-peer multiplayer is the safer option if you want to play the game five years after its launch.
2. The main benefits are lower latency (a measure of the time delay), less cheating, and no advantage for the player hosting the game as you would have otherwise.
3. Screen tearing - this typically happens when your gaming system doesn't have enough time to draw the next frame before it's supposed to be displayed. Instead of getting a full frame, you will be getting partial frames.
798px-Tearing_%28simulated%29.jpg

Jaggies and anti-aliasing - geometric figures typically have hard jagged edges when made by computers. Anti-aliasing methods, such as FSAA, will try to smooth them out.
pA7uy.png

4. That's either slowdown or frame-drops. Slowdown is when the game is displaying every frame, but in slow motion. Frame-dropping is when the game skips some of the frames. Both happen when the system can't deal with high load situations.

4. The word lag is mostly used when you play an online game and the game world doesn't respond to player inputs, or events are out of sync because of slow network either on your side or on the server side.

Frame drops or slowdowns are exactly what was described in the reply before me.

I have 1560 (EU) XBL points; I want to make purchases totalling 1600 XBL points - and with the impending swap from points to real money I'd like to make the transaction pronto to avoid losing out on the exchange.

Unfortunately, the go-to source of tiny quantities of XBL points - XBL Rewards - is now down for the transition, so that option's out. Do I have any other options barring making a larger points purchase (Or indeed, is there a combination of larger points purchases that would leave me with round enough numbers of points that I could then find other things to buy with?)

I've actually been wondering just how those supposed capture cards work. Neither DS nor 3DS do not have video output.
I think there are official review DS and maybe 3DS systems that do, but there are custom solutions out there as well: http://3dscapture.com/
As far as I understand it the custom solution just siphons off the relevant signals as they're being sent around the circuitry. The gallery on the guy's site shows what it looks like inside.

When looking at a game that was on both the PS2 and original Xbox, how do you choose which to buy? example: Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers

Is there some online resource that can help me make a decision? Wikipedia sometimes helps, but not often.

Does the Xbox always have better graphics?

What does Kappa mean in regards to fighting games and what is the origin of it?

"Kappa" is the twitch.tv code for this face in the chat:

Popular streamers tend to get their own icons, and he got one a few years back. Since then, it's been used primarily in the chats as a way to show sarcasm.

Does the Xbox 360, PS3, WiiU have the ability to send online reports of bugs or crashes of games automatically back to their respective developers or publishers? Will next-gen consoles have the ability to do this?

They probably could, but I don't necessarily think it'll come prefab.
