That's definitely not true. On my house door the top lock does indeed point up but the bottom one points down. On a few lock boxes I have they all point down. On my car they point down. Actually the only place I can think of where I use a key pointing up is for a house door bar lock like in the picture above.

My guess would be that a lock is upside down when the locking mechanism shoves the locking thing into the opposite direction. That way, you can use the exact same lock for both directions by just building it in either beard down or up.

Ok, something weird is happening. I'm waking up everyday (even on weekends) at 4:30 AM for some reason, and I have trouble trying to sleep again.

What can cause this?? I really hate the feeling I get when I wake up, I feel very awake yet tired at the same time.

When you wake up, do you have the urge to go to the bathroom (even if, when you go, not much comes out)?

Then maybe it's just a movie thing? For example is it clearly shown in the Matrix movies;

or in the opening credits of Dexter:

Edit: also carlocks don't count because the keys have sharp edges on both sides,
Autoschluessel_Opel_Astra.jpg

or look completely different than normal keys all together

stuff about locks
I've had locks that "face" down, and others that "face" up. I always assumed that one of the two ways was wrong, just installed upside down, but I never knew which way was "right. However I always thought the key was supposed to go up, because in Oblivion, aren't the tumblers in the top? Other games too, I think.

Also yay for Dexter pic! I just got on this bandwagon about a month ago, and I'm so in love with that show.

Maybe you're eating a lot before going to bed. If you do that although you used not to, you'll experience disturbances in your sleep pattern.
Maybe you drink a lot before going to bed. Don't do that, drink a glass at the most, and make sure you take a piss before sleep time.
Maybe your neighbor gets up at 4:30 AM now, and his alarm wakes you up, or his door closing or his car starting does the trick. There's little you can do about that.
Maybe something else changed in your environment, like airplane highways having switched around, maybe there's a big construction site in your vicinity.

Analyze what you've changed in your behavior just before this started, analyze changes in your environment.

What is the point of saying "persons" instead of "people" in a sentence?
People is referring to a group as a whole, whereas persons is specifically referring to each individual. I think it's really only used formally because the difference is subtle.

As others have said, one reason is so that Facebook can track what links people are clicking on. They use this for overall statistics, but also to tailor your newsfeed to your personal likes.

Another reason they do this is to try and stop malware sites from spreading links through Facebook. This way, if Facebook is alerted that a link is malicious, it is really easy to stop people from visiting it.
XMonkey said:
Possibly helps people track referring links so if you ran Nyan.cat you would know people visited from Facebook. Not sure if you can track this regardless of the actual link text, though.
Thanks guys!

Yes thats how it used to look for me.

Nup when I click that it brings up the playlist view as a seperate new window. So if I do that I have the artwork view open with the play pause timeline etc controls at the bottom and then also a playlist in a seperate window without any controls.

And if i close the album play view VLC closes down completely.
Reinstall VLC, and check teh option to delete everything from all your previous installs. Your preferences are messed up, as it should not be doing that.

Anyone know where one could get hold of some illuminated shutter shades?

I'm not talking about glow-in-the-dark ones, or those cheap ones with shitty LED's in a clear plastic frame.

I'm talking about the ones Yeezy wore to the 2008 Grammys:

I'm looking for a cheap computer upgrade ($300-$400 maybe?). And when I say cheap I mean I'm still using a 7 year old Compaq Presario with a 40 gig hard drive. I'm well past due for something new, I feel like a grandma. All I ever used it for was to browse the internet and listen to music. And to stream games and what not to my TV.

But I can't even hook up a wireless internet connection with my current PC. And I have a VGA to HDMI cable so it would be nice if I just had a computer with an HDMI out. Any advice? Don't laugh please.

The door locks (upside down etc) all depend on what side of the door the lock was made for. You can use it on either side, but if you use it on the side it wasn't intended on, the lock is upside down.

Anyone ever take the Spanish placement test for college? I'm taking Spanish I+II for the summer session, and I'm wondering if I should wing it. I know Spanish I, but not II. I graduate August 5. It's multiple choice from what I hear.

How comfortable are you mucking about with PC hardware?

The people in this thread and all the posted info will help you immensely:
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=417014

to answer your last questions more directly, You can buy a PCI wireless NIC for your PC to get a wireless signal to it, and any video card from the last 2 or 3 years will definitely have an HDMI out.

Thanks Orellio

BTW I had seen that thread. I just figured for how crappy I was looking for it would be the wrong place. But I definitely don't wanna put any new hardware into what I have now - that ship has sailed.

Bought this for my mother about a mother ago to replace her 11-year old Dell PC.

So far running like a champ. Has HDMI out, space for up to 8GB of ram, and with the appropriate Low-Profile Video Card would be a half-decent gaming PC.

Yes this is the type of stuff I believe would be plenty for me. And a situation where I can put a video card in it down the line and play a couple games would be icing on the cake. I still have the Half Life 1 box laying around and never played.

Fair enough. For lower budgets building a PC isn't entirely viable. That PC AbsoluteZero posted seems good for your needs. It seems PC gaming isn't high on your priority list, but I know a GAFer who bought a PC like that from Wal-Mart (I think his is an AMD X4, however), dropped a $150 video card into it and is able to play any game he wants.

Yes. I don't know what's going on, really.
Ok, since that is the case, here is what works for me:

When you wake up tonight, instead of getting up to go to the bathroom, force yourself to stay in bed and go back to sleep (4:30am). You will fall asleep and wake up a little while later having to go to the bathroom (let's say 5:30am). Go ahead an reward yourself by taking a leak.

Then, the next night, you won't wake up at 4:30am, but instead will wake up at 5:30am. Just like the night before, force yourself to go back to sleep. You'll wake up later (say, 6:30am), at which point you can go to the bathroom.

Continue this process (not going to the bathroom the first time you wake up) each night until you can sleep through the whole night. I know it's hard to NOT go to the bathroom when you really have an urge in the morning, but this tactic has worked for me numerous times in the past.

Yeah I think there might be a model or two above this one, but that was the cheapest PC Wal-Mart had that wasn't Celeron-based. (Not to mention the Celeron model had only 2GB of Ram. Scary.)

Yeah that would be perfect. And no, PC gaming isn't high as of now. Its something I'd like to do. If I could play some CS and Amnesia that would be great. But really any improvement will do, so I'd like to keep it as cheap as possible for now.

Counterstrike might actually play really damn well on the integrated chip that's in there due to its age, but Amnesia is a bit more of a stretch.

Concerning Amnesia: Are you talking about the way it would be now or after I added a low end ~$150 card. I'm assuming chip means processor which means its pretty limited to how far a future video card could take it? It would be shortsighted of me to bar myself from some capable video gaming down the line. But I also don't want to go above $400, so that's what I have to deal with.

I'm sure he means now, with the included graphics processor, which are notoriously below par. After that $150 video card upgrade you could play pretty much any game at or above console level. The dual core CPU would hold you back on a few games like GTA4 and Bad Company 2 however.

Thanks for the clarification. How much would the aforementioned model with amd x4 be?

Its too bad this stepping stone isn't a bit lower in price range. But again I can't get carried away and try to turn something I need into a gaming rig if its not meant to be.

Have Youtube speeds gone absolutely down the shitter for around the last month or so for anyone else?

They seemed to get better for me. Make sure you aren't automatically being switched to 720p on the video player.

For me, yes. I have noticed, over the past few years, that it seems to go in "cycles" between slow and fast/unnoticeable. It seems to switch every couple of months.

If you right-click on the video, you can choose "show video info", which will show how fast it's downloading. When I experience "slow" speeds, it seems to burst the download. That is, it downloads plenty fast for about a second and then drops to 0.

Unfortunately, I don't know how to solve the problem other than wait.

Each tab is treated as its own process. This is done so that a crash in one tab won't affect the others. It also (slightly) helps with security.
But I only had one tab open when I took the screenshot, does it just automatically do that expecting tabs?

Thanks for the answer too.

It includes extensions too.

Do Shift+Esc to see Chrome's task manager.

Do you have any extensions? Those also exist as separate processes under Task Manager.

I have a bunch of home movies on DV casettes I'd like to transfer to my PC. How do I do this? Do I need a special program or cable to do this?
