He doesn't believe humans are carnivores? Sounds like a smart guy.
He's one of those people that listen to things on the radio and think it's fact. He once told me, I kid you not, that if you eat right and exercise, those two things alone, then your cancer will go away. I asked him did that mean all people who have cancer can have it cured by just doing these two things and he said with confidence, "About eighty percent."

There is not an accurate enough photo on the entire internet for me to show you what my face looked like when he said that.

I had a friend at uni that didn't believe lung/throat cancer could occur in non-smokers, strange guy too.

not that I know of. I've been using it for a while now and haven't had any problems. Sometimes it'll have to update because youtube changes how the videos are set, or something like that, and it won't be able to download them until it's updated

Awesome, thanks! :)

shit, are nescafe cans in all countries so difficult to open? I mean, the ones in Thailand need to be pried open with a knife because the tabs on the top can't have been designed for use by human fingers. Is it similar in the US?

When burning a cd in itunes it gives you the option for MP3 and audio versions, which one works in a car and which one doesnt? I always forget and need to burn a cd for a friend tomorrow for a road trip

Pretty sure MP3 works everywhere.

Audio works everywhere. MP3 works if your friend's car stereo supports it.

Ok, this is driving me nuts.

i needed this picture

http://i01.i.aliimg.com/photo/v0/11312477/Aries_125_Scooter.jpg

and i proceeded to right click - save image. Nothing unusual with it.

Except this is what the thumbnail for the pic looks like in explorer.

yBTWW.jpg

So, the thumbnail shows the scooter in some environment, but the pic shows a white background. What the hell is going on ? Aren't thumbnails generated by explorer ? Are they stored somewhere in the same .jpg file ?
HELP

I need some tech-GAF help:

I have a Gamecube disc that gives me read errors every time I put it in the Wii. No scratches at all on the disc, and no cracks or anything that would cause the laser not to read (and my other GCN games all work fine). I can see that the inner ring is split, but I'm not sure how to fix it or if it's even possible to repair. Here's a crappy mockup I did in photoshop (since my attempts at taking pictures all didn't show the issue very well).

Imagine the white circle is a space between the top and bottom halves of the ring. The gap is roughly as wide as a sheet of paper. The entire circumference is 'unglued', like if you were to put a pin in between the two halves you could probably pry the whole thing apart. I can't tell exactly, but it looks as though the gap goes all the way to the outside diameter of the ring.
kuE9I.jpg

I noticed initially that there was more disc noise than normal when I started the game up, and now sometimes I can get to the menu, most times not, just a "Disc Read Error. Reboot". I'm afraid that the disc might get stuck in the Wii drive if RPMs get too high and it flies apart...

What do you think, GAF, fixable or am I out of luck?

When you make a link to something, you can use a thumbnail in the html code. So the person could be using the picture of the scooter with the background and is linking it to the big picture.

That's not what's happening here. Try saving the picture as he posted it to this thread and you'll see what he's talking about.

What's the best CD burning program?

I haven't had to make an actual music CD in forever and my modern PC may or may not even have any installed.

Do I need to go to a doctor for a minor sprained ankle with just a little swelling, or will it heal up OK on it's own?

Nah you'll be fine, they'd probably just tell you to RICE that bad boy anyway - rest, ice, compression and elevation. If it's really bad, take some ibuprofen or other anti-inflammatory and you'll be fine in a few days.

Laptop/Graphics question!

I have an Asus G51J laptop model. However, it has a shitload of shared memory enabled (which is basically memory that should be shared between the graphics card and the system when need be): http://i.imgur.com/x7rny.jpg

It seems that some applications, such as Starcraft 2 don't want to use this shared memory, so I basically have 1.7GB of my memory sitting doing nothing. I want to disable this, but there is no BIOS option to do so. The BIOS screen is garbage really, can't overclock or anything. Only shows some system information and I can change the boot order, etc.

Is there ANY other way to get rid of this crap? The card has 1GB of dedicated memory, why it needs that much shared memory is beyond me. Or preferably, am I missing something with the BIOS? Mine seems incredibly under featured...

Yeah that's a bit weird. The preview window in GIMP shows the same background as that thumbnail, but when the image is loaded it has the white background.

Edit: Just downloaded an exif metadata editor and loaded the jpg into it. The thumbnail is embedded in the main image. According to the info that came with the editor:

"Most digital cameras will save miniature versions of the original image -thumbnails- in addition to the main image. The thumbnail normally has the same content as the original image but, in some cases, could have totally different image content".

Just had a thought.

From what i've read, there are a few people alive today that were born in the 19th century. Lets say in 1898 (regardless if they were a baby or a toddler), they met someone who was 100 years old. Does that mean it is possible for someone alive in 2011 to have seen someone born in the 1700s?

It really put me back. Truly shows how things/people like Naopoleon, Slavery, American revolutionary/civil war were not that long ago. I always thought of these things as far away events.

I just got one of those home theater in-a-box setups as a gift the other day (Samsung HT-D5500 if you are curious). It has a pretty limited set of inputs. Well, one input, to be precise; a digital audio port. I am running an optical cable from my cable box to it to get the benefit of surround sound while watching TV, and that's working out just fine. But I want to have Xbox 360 in surround, too!

I looked for optical audio switches and they all get really poor reviews on Amazon. Anyone here ever use one? There's one on Amazon that costs like three bucks. I'll go ahead and order one of those as there's really nothing to lose there, but I'm curious to know others' experiences.

why do ties exist?

just one of those things

Ties are a scam, invented by a cabal of professional tailors in 17th century England as a way of getting rid of the leftover strips of cloth they had laying about the place, and fleecing the wealthy foolish upper-classes while doing so.

Oh man I had the same thing happen to me with a pic I had. I'd show you, but it's nsfw.

So if I just wanted to buy the newest iPad model but only wanted to use it for WiFi/no contract at home/work/school, where would I go about finding one of those?

Any place that's licensed to sell Apple products should have one. Try an Apple Store, Best Buy, Target, Wal-Mart, etc. Whichever place suits you.

that's interesting. It had to be something like that but it's the first time it happens to me and it was weird.

This thing could be used in lots of creative ways though, like hiding ghost images in thumbnails to freak people out.

Sure it's possible. Things to consider:
— Life expectancy was much lower in those days, and gets lower the farther back you go
— Population density was much lower
— Means of transportation were much more primitive and localized, especially for common people
— Starvation wasn't uncommon even in the more civilized parts of the world

If you put all that together, then you'd end up with pretty much one scenario where it could've happened, and that is where the old guy would've resided. There, the likeliness rises extremely, of course, since it's a given that at locations where old people are, other people reside, and procreate. The old people wouldn't survive without others to drag them along, so to speak. At least not on a statistical level.

The big question is though whether there really were people around in 1898 that were at least 99 years old.

What's the difference between 2.40:1 and 1.78:1 aspect ratios? Which is better? Why? If one's better why don't more use it?
2.40:1 is more of a cinematic aspect ratio, whereas 1.78:1 (typically expressed as 16:9) is the standard widescreen format.
