Yeah, and it's also sometimes referred to as dominant design, but I'm looking for a 'broader' theory that, if I remember correctly, uses the qwerty keyboard of an example how a certain system or design influences further developments despite better designs/systems developed over time. I encountered it in article about political systems.

Edit: found it, path dependence.
Yeah, path dependence is far broader than just legacy systems.

Yeah, I remember reading about ages ago while studying Benedict Anderson's Imagined Communities - somewhere in the sidelines of an article I was reading there were some remarks about a possible role of path dependency on the development of nationalism. Glad I remembered it, got kinda frustrated about not being able to track it :).

This is depressingly understandable

I'm looking for a short story I read six years or so ago in a sci-fi anthology:

-Humans branch out into the galaxy, and find that it is dominated by an alien intelligence that is basically all-powerful, and sinister. This force has already enslaved all other intelligent life forms.

-Humans and their colony ships are hunted to near extinction, always attempting to adapt, genetically modify themselves, and hide themselves away.

-They're always found and systematically erradicated, even though they put up a fight. One branch of the story depicts the humans, heavily modified for a high-G planet, being found and attacked.

-Towards the end of the story, one lone ship manages to find the "headquarters" of the alien race, and meets the "leader" of the alien forces. I forget exactly what happens, but the gist is that there is no hope for the human race, they are but play-things to the alien.

Maybe someone will recognize this. Worth a shot, because I've searched for quite awhile and never rediscovered the name.
Sounds cool. I wouldn't mind reading that. It sounds a touch like The Forever War but I know its not that.

what's the best site to find apartments/studios for rent? (this is in miami dade)
try using http://www.padmapper.com/

Now I have a question. I got a 2 point ticket last week for Unsafe Lane Changing and I have to appear for court. Do I plea Guilty or Not Guilty so I can talk to the prosecuter to try and get me a no point ticket, (of course paying more for.) I am from NJ btw.

In some places you can do that with a plea of "no contest" in cases like this. It basically means, "I'm not going to admit any guilt but I'll deal with the punishment." I don't know for sure in New Jersey, though.

Is it just me or is GAF remarkably slow right now? Pages are loading slowly and keeping me from scrolling or navigating while they load.

The rest of the internet works fine, though.

OK I was just watching a movie on my computer when the start menu pops up and I see the mouse cursor moving and clicking on the my documents folder, then it disappeared. Am I being paranoid by thinking someone is remotely accessing my computer right now??

Mouse was sliding and something pressed the win key?

What's the best way to get good at playing pool? Are lessons worth it, or should I just get a book or instructional video or something? I've recently got into playing pool and while I kinda suck, I fucking love it and would love to take it up as a hobby.

I'm reading (and loving) the first book of the Song of Ice and Fire series, A Game of Thrones). However, as I don't live in the US and I like to read my books in English, I have to order the second one in advance. Could someone list the the name of the second book (I wanted to search online, but I'm afraid of spoilers).

Thanks!

A Game of Thrones
A Clash of Kings
A Storm of Swords
A Feast for Crows
A Dance with Dragons
The Winds of Winter
A Dream of Spring

The last three are unreleased, with "A Dance with Dragons" being scheduled for July.

Warning: In some areas SoS has been split into two volumes.

DON'T accidentally skip the second part. This happened to quite a few people.

What do you mean by that? In some coutries, they split the book into two volumes? I just ordered this version (http://www.amazon.com/dp/0553106635/?tag=neogaf0e-20.

I'm going to take ochem in the fall and I was wondering if it would be "moral" to audit the class during the summer so I can get a better gist of it.

How would I go about identifying a shoe with only know the company that makes them? All, I know is there nikes. Sadly, I threw away the box.

audit as in attend the lectures and take notes but don't take the tests. That way when I take the class for real during the fall I can learn it better since I heard ochem is quite difficult.

That's not auditing, that's just wandering into the classroom. Typical you would want the professors permission, but if it's a big hall, I guess no one will notice/care.

I suppose it depends somewhat on the class size and how your instructors are paid. If you're going to audit a 10-person class and your instructor is paid by the student, then I might be a little hesitant. There's no way you're not going to be noticed and your instructor could resent your presence. But if it's a bigass auditorium lecture, I would have no moral or ethical issues with just hanging out to listen. Even if it's a small class, your instructor might be cool with it if you're just upfront about it and you don't waste class time.

That has nothing to do with morality. That sounds like a good idea if you think it will help you.

Edit: I didn't understand the question. If you're allowed to attend, then it has nothing to do with morality.

Most universities expect you to pay to audit a class. Check with your school's policies and, most importantly, the professor.

Keep in mind that some universities limit the number of times you can take a course. My university limited it to 2 times. So if you audit and then take it and don't pass during the second time, you'd have to plead your case to get permission to take it again.

Also, as Zoe said, you'd probably have to pay.

Well technically, auditing would include taking the tests. But since no letter grade is assigned, the tests could be skipped and it wouldn't matter. So what he is describing is auditing. However, you're method is free.

My chick friend is showing interest in gaming. We both go to school together at a Movie/game visual effects school and she's really into fantasy/art deco/steam punk art and wants an easy game to try out.

She doesnt have a console though - anyone got any suggestions for PC games she could try?

Ooh. This is such a delicate question. I presume she's not going to have a rad gaming PC so it's gotta be limited to some of the lighter stuff, right? I'd probably make an actual thread for this.

Would BioShock be a possibility? $5 on Steam today, I'm sure she'd like the art style. Don't remember how the difficulty curve was...

Yea I was thinking about this. But not sure how good her rig is and it may be too difficult. She saw some of the art and loved it though.

She does have a PS2 tho. Haha.

That's a good suggestion.

Does anyone know of a good Kingdom Hearts 1 trailer? She is showing interest in that...
For someone not into games, I'd recommend KH2 actually, the first one was really quite challenging despite it's kiddy look. Second one is much much easier.

Grim Fandango. Amazing story and absolutely beautiful art deco environments. It's an old game and will have no trouble running on any PC. It's an adventure game, which a lot of people aren't really into, but you can't really "die", you just get stuck on a puzzle. So I guess it's considered easy.

Cool thanks for the suggestions!

Ochem isn't that bad.

Unless the classroom is absolutely full (ie - all the seats are taken), then I would just attend the class on every day except test days. Just walk in. Definitely do it for the first couple of weeks during add/drop period.

Science classes usually have a ton of people in them, so nobody is going to know.

Shall I buy polarised Oakleys or non-polarised sunglasses?

The polarised ones are more expensive. But is it worth it?
If you are going to use them while driving, fishing, etc. then yes, polarized light will reduce reflected light and will most likely make you a bit more comfortable outside. I find it to be most noticeable when driving. It will make a difference if you're near water as well. In the end, it depends on how bothered you are by reflected light.

Was getting outta the driveway and didn't curve out enough and kinda scraped the edge of the car. So some of the paint has gone and it looks like its been scratched to death. What has to be done? And does it cost a lot ?
