if you don't believe in god are you automatically an atheist? Or is Atheism more a particular view, instead of just being non-religious/believer?
You are an atheist in the context of talking with someone about their religious beliefs but it's only in the context of talking about someone else's beliefs that you are any label, because it's a lack of belief (you don't believe). Otherwise we're making the assumption that religious beliefs are the operative circumstances, and that's just ironic.

I'm thinking of running some sort of contest on GAF for the hell of it with the prize being something thats pretty cool I guess...

any ideas what the contest should be? the contest needs to be related to PC games somehow though.
Some sort of high-score challenge in a bunch of cheap/free/commonly purchased games, maybe? There was a similar thing done in the Steam thread a while ago, iirc.

Ok. Is everyone ready? I'm trying to convert my vcrs to a digital format. Now I'm using dazzle to do this and the whole vcr to digital isn't the difficult part. The problem lies in the fact that I recorded the tapes from England. I'm in America now. I think I recorded them in SP and the region is PAL. Now I borrowed my uncle's vcr which is supposed to do both PAL and NTSC but when I attach the vcr to the dazzle (which is subsequently attached to the computer) all I get is a black screen with a very mild static noise. The vcr has an auto detect system which knows what type of tape it is but that doesn't help. I tried putting it in a manual setting and did every combination with the speed and etc. but that doesn't change it at all. Just when I change it from PAL to NTSC the static goes higher up in pitch. The weird thing is when I put the tape into this old tv that has a built in vcr system. I change it to aux and now I get a white video static but I hear the audio but sped up like 20x. I tried changing the vcr settings on that but the only thing it has is SLP and SP. That tv is from America btw so it might only play NTSC videos. So what can I do GAF? I have these 15 year old tapes and I can't convert them :(

there is something wrong with the VCR (or the capture card/connection to the capture card) i think.
even if the vcr it doesn't support PAL you should get some distorted picture and audio -at least with NTSC on PAL - I imagine it's the same the other way round as well, but if you just get static something must be fundamentally wrong

I connected the red, white, and yellow cables just fine. I also made sure it was the audio out not audio in since I'm not recording anything from the computer to the vcr. But damn, that sucks. Also what are the chances that the tape is inherently damaged from age or whatever?

well do the videos work when you connect the vcr directly to your tv?
vhs tapes should degrade over age/plays but that should just result in worse picture/audio and not blank screen with static

I am making a first attempt at growing vegetables, and I've had a few successes with rone de nice and courgettes.

However, some of my latest batch have started to look a bit nasty on the end:

Does anyone from gardening GAF know why this has happened, and what I can do to prevent it? Also, should I pick these ASAP as it could spread to my other, good fruits?

In cinemas, do movies still come on film or is it all digital now?
Not all theaters have upgraded to digital projectors, but theaters that are all digital only receive digital copies.

Sit-com question here. When shows are filmed infront of a live audience (Friends is going to be my example for this q since I just finished all 10 series), how do visual gags work? What I mean is when the camera is pointed towards a character who is meant to be alone, but then the camera pans to a person standing behind him and the audience give the appropriate response.

Example: In the last ever episode of Friends, ross is shouting at he phone "Did she get off the plane?!" here, he doesn't know if Rachel got off the plane, but then the camera pans to show her standing behind him and the audience goes wild. Wouldn't the audience have known she was behind him the whole time?

Bonus: How do the audience laugh take after take even if they've heard the joke over 10 times during different takes? Is it all just fake laughter?

Seeing as how the PSP is nearing end of life I am thinking about picking up a new UMD capable system to use as backup in case my current 2000 should die sometime in the future.

Anywaste, I remember there being some hullabaloo about some inherent hardware flaws in the screen of the 3000 model. Does anyone know wither that was sorted out or not? If not I want to stray far from that particular model.

The scanline issue with the PSP-3000 model was never fixed since it's not possible to fix it without changing the underlying technology. Overall it's a lot better than the older screen versions.

Sony: PSP Brite's scanlines caused by hardware, no plans to fix [update]

I've always wondered that myself. The only thing I can think of is the audience is getting stage directions to stay silent and then applaud.

I know with Friends, they have many scenes where they filmed it without an audience and then showed it back to them to get the reaction. I'm not sure if that's how this one worked out (Wikipedia says no but a fan report says yes).

My mom has a HP Compaq Presario CQ56 that has special functions on top of the F keys (with symbols engraved on them like jump to previous song and mute etc). These special functions are hindering things like alt+f4 from working. In fact, F1 seems to be the only button that works as usual. How can I remove this functionality and make this laptop behave like a real pc? xD The laptop is crammed full with programs (70 programs at boot) so I don't know what everything does.

I am currently reading the last Harry Potter book because I haven't done so yet and I want to do it before watching the movies.

I realized that basically everything I read is an one-off tale. Can somebody throw some names of other great book SERIES at me? I want a single big story that goes across multiple books, much like Harry Potter was. Bonus points if the book puts story first, and being full of long winded descriptions of things second.

Guess you don't want Wheel of Time, then. ;)

I'd suggest asking in the reading thread, or checking out some of the links from there. You'd probably need to be a little more specific, though--are you looking for something similar to HP, i.e. fantasy set in the modern day, young protag, leaning towards YA, mystery plotlines, individual storylines per book as well as one overarching plot? Or is it more that you just want a really good series?

I have no need for a specific genre, as long as the thing in that genre is good. I just want a really good series? Yup, that pretty much sums it up.

We have a program monitoring our internet at work called Websense. Every night for about an hour it will block Google.co.uk with the following reason: "The Websense category "Malicious Web Sites" is filtered." Any other time accessing it is fine, so why does it do this?

what's the best way to wash a typical baseball hat? went biking and mud flicked up onto the back of my hat and it dried. I've tried washing it off with a wet sponge but it didn't do much. I'm guessing I can't stick it in the washing machine?

Depending on what it's made of, you can just throw it in the washer and AIR DRY it. As long as it's not wool or has a cardboard brim, the washer is fine. You could always try some woolite type cleaner in a sink if you don't know what it's made of or want to be extra careful. Just don't throw it in the dryer.

it has a brim, but I'm not sure if it's cardboard or not

I wouldn't suggest the washer because it will seriously destroy the shape of your hat.

Try this or just put it in the dishwasher under a large bowl or something..

So is glue absolutely required when assembling Gundam model kits? I just realized that maybe I've been doing it wrong all this time.

I recently started buying them again, and when I used to put them together as a kid, I never used glue.

That's "last post." Click on the orange GAF-ball to go to last unread.

Though the Gaming side is messed up and sets all posts to read too soon :(

Then you could just use subscriptions, because when you look at the main listings it set everything to read.

If everyone in the world ran simultaneously east to west would the momentum cause the earth to rotate faster?
Yes.

Edit: That is, after the momentum has been transferred to all of earth, which takes some time.

Yeah, but then the GAF-ball no longer works because the Gaming side set it to read >:(

Makes finding new threads a bit harder too.

What about His Dark Materials?

Dan Simmon's Hyperion series (4 books) is the most engaging story I have ever read. It's at the other end of your spectrum though. Its adventure sci-fi. The best way I can think to describe it is as the Lord of the Rings of the sci-fi side.

I agree with this guy. I just finished the 4 Hyperion books and it's easily the best series I've ever read. Even better than A Song of Ice and Fire (which is a close second).

If you want something more epic try a Wheel of Time, but be prepared for some tough reading books 6-10. Amazing overall however.
