Fitness related question:

Let's say you run a route from point A to point B, then from B to A, essentially running the same route twice. Now let's say point B is at a significantly higher elevation than point A, so from A to B you are going uphill, while from B to A you're going downhill.

The question being: is the increased effort from running uphill canceled out by the decreased effort from running downhill, and as such are you burning the same calories as if A to B/B to A was a perfectly flat route?

depends on terrain too. jog downhill on a trail and tell me its easier than jogging on flat ground... its not, imo. lots of effort placed on your thighs to counteract gravity

Heard thumping noises last night. This morning, found out that the idiot kids in the neighborhood had been throwing eggs at my house.

I'm thinking of getting motion sensing porch lights. Any other ways of discouraging this kind of behavior?

Sit on your porch naked with a 12 gauge and some clown makeup. Any time the kids are within earshot start screaming "HE COMES" and splatter catsup on your chest. It worked great for me.

Oh, you guys. :P

There are only 3 options I can think of:

Make the kids like you
Make the kids afraid of you
Take it up with their parents if you know them.

If they are not neighborhood kids, file a complaint with your local police department and just keep a scrub brush handy =/

I want to get my mother a pvr/dvr for her birthday. Which is the easiest to use/most cost effective?

TiVo is still the go-to. Her cable/satellite provider might offer a box of their own?

This is a 2 part question:

It's illegal to camp on certain website names, like I couldn't buy "Microsoft.com" before they had it and then charge them a huge price for it.

1. What about non-profit organizations?

2. What about "profiles" on larger websites? Could I legally have the username, say "TheChurchOfScientology" on youtube or Twitter or some big website like that if I would have chosen it before that website got popular? Then post stuff that is offensive to that church?

I have an account but I don't use it at all. I don't even understand what it's for, really. I guess it's fine for famous people to send snippets to fans, but I don't really care about hearing about those snippets, so I never log on. For sending my friends updates I just use Facebook wall. I don't get the point of Tumblr either or why it's so popular.

Does anyone have any clue when the next big NeoGaf new user verification is going to happen?

My girlfriend wants to post here.. just registered as CooTooLoo.. if anyone in charge wants to throw another female into the mix go ahead and verify her account ;)

Is she hot?

Also.. just realized.. we live together.. so her account will show up as the same IP I post from at home..

But I swear it's her, and she wants to post here.. she is a gamer and all that.

I think so. I've posted pics in the creepy "Post your significant other" thread.

AFAIK, it's not illegal to purchase a domain that may or may not be of use to a company. Remember when zelda.com was a porn site? You can't just buy it and let it sit. You have to show that you are using it in some way.

Twitter, facebook, etc are separate though. You can call yourself whatever you wanted, but I'm sure if the company wanted to they could bitch at Twitter and force you to rename your account.

Is she Iranian? The name sounds like a farsi word.

No, it's a silly misspelling of Cthulhu.

Cyan: Thanks.. I thought I'd seen rumors of that.

Either way, wanted to mention it since she'll have the same IP.

This isn't really a stupid question but I'd rather not make a thread for it.

So whenever I hold out my fingers they start shaking. My friends noticed this and thought it was weird. I have the same issue whenever I'm trying to solder something. My fingers are shaking way too much than they should be for me to be able to nicely solder. Is this because I'm always on the computer?

A whole range of things can cause shaky hands. Low blood sugar to simply aging; certain drugs/alcohol. I doubt computer usage.

The forum's search is still disabled for everyone because of bandwidth or something. You can use Google, like so: site:neogaf.com MrOogieBoogie's avatar

Yeah I get this from time to time too. Sometimes its so bad I have to pick up a cup with both hands just cause my hands are shaking so much and then a few hours later it'll be completely gone and I'm fine.

My hands shaked a lot more when I smoked. Quit smoking 3 months ago and i have a lot less shaking. I hear coffee isn't good for it either. Do you do either of these things?

Is there an option on GAF to change how the date is set? I want dd/mm/yyyy not the American mm/dd/yyyy. I can't see it anywhere so I guess it's not an option, but why isn't it an option?

I'll bet they could change the format for everyone, but to just make it an option is probably something they'd have to tweak in the forum software, and it's probably not worth it.

Just a guess though.

GAF hates furreigners.

Is there a name for the phenomenon of many people singing badly sounding great together?
I always wonder about this whenever I hear crowds at live concerts. Individually, they mostly sound like shit, as a whole it sounds wonderful....

This always trips me out too. I will call it 'false harmonizing' lol.

I always thought it was real harmonizing.

Things sound better when sung loudly or as a group since individual imperfections don't show up as much unless everyone messes up the exact same way which is unlikely.

Harmonizing is when different (groups of) people sing different notes.

People tend to be better singers when they have other people backing them up.

Any tips for getting up in the morning? I do my best to get my 8 hours, and I need to be to work for 9, so I need to leave the house a 8:15 at the latest. I set my alarm on my iPhone at 3 times (6:30, 6:45, and 7:00) but I usually end up sleeping through or turning them off in my sleep.

I tend to naturally get up around 8, but that means I can't get out of the house until 8:30, but that usually guarantees I don't get to work until 9:05-9:15, depending on traffic.

"8 hours" is like saying doing 15 push-ups is good. It's relative.

You might need 7, you might need 9.

There are very many ways to ensure sleeping better, which could include right bed, right way of going to sleep, eating right before going to bed (light), as little light in the room as possible, but more light in the mornings, no distracting sounds or lights.

But get Sleep Cycle for your iPhone. It probably will help you. And also, only set one alarm. Don't tell your mind that it's negotiable to get up when the alarm rings. You HAVE to get up when it rings. The 'smart snooze' on Sleep Cycle also helps in that regard.

Maybe I'm just thinking of chorus. I'm not a musician, I just think people always sound better in groups.

Do I need the email address I registered with? I used my college email and how that I've graduated I've only got 1 year left of access.

Is it very expensive to open a fedex/UPS office?

Nah usually you can just open the door, doesn't cost anything.

herpderp

Do you actually mean renting out office space and hiring people to work there? What do you mean more specifically?
