Here's one that probably is truly stupid:

Does digital media expire? I've been purchasing books on Kindle for a year now, and I've been thinking of downloading a few albums from iTunes, but I have this (probably irrational) fear that in five or ten years time I will need to repurchase these things.
You can listen to music while you are offline so I'm pretty sure the answer is no.

It should not expire unless that specific vendor put it in the file to disable itself. I know some textbook publishers do this (scum of the fucking earth), but I think iTunes is fine. No experience with Kindle stuff though.

Cool. I just wonder about the viability of the format or something. Like, eventually, say in 20 years, there's a chance that any investment in electronic media will just vanish, that we'll constantly be paying into collection refreshing.

Your question was very valid; if the kindle stuff is a service like Steam or something, then you'd be fucked if they decide to stop supporting their kindle content. If it's just a straight up file they give you, it should be safe. Double check their terms or whatever. If it will expire, it has to be spelled out somewhere.

Well, I guess I'm more concerned about the scenario in which people are for some reason unable to back up their content, or if a person were to max out their authorizations for content. So iTunes give you, what, 5 devices per song? Over a lifetime a person is going to exceed that, without question, especially if you're sporting a desktop and a laptop both.

So my concern is that if I purchase, say, a thousand dollars in music or video over the course of a few years, once I've replaced my computer a few times and possibly lost my backups, will all of my purchases be persistent within my account? If I'm a sixty year old man and I decide I want to listen to the Violent Femmes, am I going to have to dish out another ten bucks for the content?

That has more to do with the company you're buying from. It makes no business sense to keep all those old songs available for customers to download years down the road, but it's really nice to be able to have access to your catalog of purchases at any time.

If you've lost your backups, it's a gamble whether or not that company will still have a copy for you to download 20 years down the line. Keep them backups safe!

@ Futureman

I assume you are in the US given your use of "highway". Are you expected to report traffic incidents like this to the Police? Here, in the UK, you would be and failure to report it would be a criminal offence. In theory anyway. I used to work in motor insurance years ago and I'm pretty sure we could trace the identity of someone just from the registration number so I'm surprised by what your insurers have said.

Not sure if that is helpful at all, sorry. Perhaps speak to the Police, if you haven't already, and see if that provides an avenue to go down?

Good luck!

Is there a hard vs chewy candy equivalent of the phrase "Liquor before beer, never fear; beer before liquor, never sicker?" Cuz if I eat hard candy like Jolly Ranchers first I'm fine, but if I eat something like a Starburst and then eat a hard candy I end up biting into the hard candy and it sucks. I could use a rhyming phrase to help me remember this.

First world problems

Seriously though, why are you eating so much candy that this is a problem?

Chewy before hard, you must be a 'tard
Chewy before hard, your mouth is in shards
Hard before chewy, never go phooey

When I'm having a blood pressure of around 120/80mmHg and diving in a depth of 10 meters and at a pressure of 2bar (= 1500mmHg), why am I still able to see the veins on my hand filled with blood?

The Palisade Guardian ad on here causes my pointer to go crazy which in turn makes me go crazy. Is there anything that can be done on my end short of just blocking the ad?

Came in here for the answer for this same question. Thing is annoying as SHIT.

Unfortunately, I don't know how to block just that ad and still let the other GAF ads through. How can I do that in Chrome?

Is there a good programmable calculator on the market that looks just like a regular one on first glance?
Obviously, the programmable kind is forbidden during tests, but the tutors really only give it a passing glance, so unless it's a huge brick with a color display and shit, they wouldn't notice.

Noscript for Firefox or Chrome. Won't run anything without your permission.

I have a question, which should be pretty easy to answer. I want to sign up for membership to a US site which only has a price in USD. I'm in the UK and only have a UK debit card. The site does have a drop down menu with UK in it, though no details change if it is selected.

So my question is, if I enter my details there and apply, will it just take funds from my account equivalent to the USD amount shown? Or will there be some kind of royal fuck up? Or will my details just be rejected?

Since you need a cell phone number now to make a gmail account, are you allowed to use a Google Voice number from one Google Account to verify another Google Account?

Why does Youtube play videos automatically even when I pause them? Sometimes I'm over at my parents' place and they have slow DSL, so when I open a Youtube video, I pause it right away so it could buffer. But for some reason, it'll start buffering and it will unpause itself! Only Youtube does this, I don't have this problem with Vimeo or any other embedded mediaer players. It's hella annoying.

I tried to cancel something on Amazon that says "shipping soon" for the status.

At the cancel screen, it gives you this message:

Shipping soon. Cancellation isn't guaranteed.

We're preparing this order for shipment. If you'd like to cancel item(s) from this order, check the Cancel Item box next to the item(s) and click "Request cancellation." We'll do our best to cancel the item(s) selected.

And then I try to cancel it, and it gives me this:

Important Message
We're sorry. An error occurred when we tried to process your request. Rest assured, we're working to resolve the problem as soon as possible. Please try again in a few minutes.

Is this normal? Does it mean it's too late to cancel the order?

I managed to find an answer for this, so if any one is interested, it's Yes.

Are you trying to redeem it on a computer or on a iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad?

Job offer in China.

2 months

40,000rmb for the 2 months.

They are covering flight..

How does this sound? Seems pretty low yea...? From the USA.

They are saying its cheaper to live there...

anybody? i seriously still can't figure this out. HAHA. :(

Go to iTunes store (make sure you are logged in to your account). On the main page of the iTunes store, you should see a box on the right side near the top of the page titled "Quick Links". First section under that is "Redeem". Click that and enter the code from the back of your card.

I believe if you are on any other main section of the iTunes store (e.g., the app store section), the "Redeem" link will still be in a box on the top right side.

Not much money but really... do it for the experience. Sounds like a great opportunity.

Hey, so in America we often get canadian pennies and most places will accept them as though they were US pennies and will also hand them out as change, too. Nothing is ever really said it and it's generally acceptable both ways although we're not really supposed to do either.

Does the reverse happen in Canada? And does this sort of thing happen in other countries with somewhat similar currency? I remember one time the roll of quarters or nickels at my register had something like a ten pence coin in it to start with and I didn't know what to do with it.

so, a friend & i are gonna do a podcast for another site, and all ive got is 2 rock band mics and a USB hub. we're gonna do this local, from one PC - what's a good & easy program to record with? in the past, a friend tried a setup with audacity but had problems syncing, dont recall what went wrong but im trying to avoid that.

thats the equivalent of 20.19$/hour in canadian, 40 hour work weeks. seems reasonable, depending on the position.

So, I have something from playasia shipping. They gave me a tracking number. Problem is they don't tell me if it's USPS, FedEx, UPS...etc. is there a site where I can enter it in and it'll tell which service it's for?

What is up with Fernando / Daniela Rocker? They(he?) seem to always be banned??
Dude's an idiot. He's the same guy who had a brag thread about selling plasma to buy more games.

As for why his girlfriend is banned, maybe he used her account or something?

There's a song at my work (Sports Authority) that plays constantly, but I don't know the name. It goes something like, "Over and over" and "Ooooh ooooooooh ooooooooh-a-ooooooh-a-oooooh"

It's a female singer, too. It's like an indie rock song, and towards the end of the song is an awesome guitar bit.

EDIT-NM I found it. It's Satellite by The Kills.

Hey guys I have this one century old document I'd like to have translated. I only know it's from 1906, was written somewhere in Poland and is about my great grandfather. The alphabet used is not familiar.

I tried to get help on reddit with no luck. Maybe I posted it in the wrong section but I've seen people asking for that kind of help earlier.

Any ideas where I could ask for help?

Do you have a scan/photo? Then send me a PM.

So when a lot of PC game drop it seems there's often driver issues with many peoples cards. How do devs cope with this whilst it's in production? Surely they must have their game running silky smooth?

Probably not going to get any responses to this, but is anyone experienced with turning gif's into sprays for Team Fortress 2? I am on a mac and it does not seem to work for me.

Does anyone remember/know of a cereal box (I'm pretty sure it was Coco Puffs) that had a slide/chute on the back that you'd drop the cereal in and it would slide down to your bowl?

Haven't been able to find it on the interwebs.

Printing an excel file but I'm having a hard time trying to get the whole thing at the center of the long white paper not an A4 paper

Any help?

MS Office 2007

Many thanks in advance

How much of Google's revenue is advertising? If its over 50% wouldn't that make them an advertising company?

Google owns several advertising companies, so they are in the advertising business, yes. But they are also a synonym for internet searches, which is their main business.

A company's main revenue sources doesn't necessarily define that company either. There are plenty of holding companies, or private equity investors, behind companies on the stock market. So if the owner is a private equity company, and the main revenue from the parent is stocks etc, how do you define the child', as it were?
