What's really weird about this is Russert was SO integrated into this year's election... he was on all the time. Perhaps even right now if this didn't happen. It's so weird.

I guess Chris Matthews is finally getting the host gig on Meet The Press like he desperatly wanted all these years......

An enthusiasm nobody else has. That's what sucks.

Seriously. Tim was one of those people you could enjoy watching and listening to these days (while not be pandered to, or feel like he had an agenda). He was straight up. Gonna miss the guy.

Didn't his family have issue with heart related diseases? And with all the work he has been putting into this years election, this sadly doesn't really surprise me.

I'm really depressed right now, like more than I think I should be considering I never met him.

Maybe this is too soon, but no way does Mathews get Meet the Press.. the person most likely is probably David Gregory. He is the least "partisan" of the bunch and is a washington journalist vs a pundit.

We can all agree he was the best debate moderator on any network. Russert was The Guy. I can't even imagine watching Meet the Press now...And he seemed so excited about this new election. :(
There was no one else like him. Mr. Russert's passing is a devastating loss to the coverage of American politics.

I'm really down about this.

Watching MSNBC is so depressing. You can see the sadness right in their face, smiles and all.
Yeah Brokaw is ready to cry. It's hard to watch.

:(

Extremely upset about this. A really smart, passionate guy who managed to make politics interesting even to apathetic people, which isn't easy to do. I learned to appreciate the guy more and more as I grew older, whether on MTP or appearances on other shows; for him to pass now, of all times, is just really untimely and tragic. He'll be sorely missed.

CBS had been trying to court Matthews for their sunday morning show for a while , so not everyone in the media sees it that way I guess.

Greggory is a suck up I wish he doesn't get it. He cant live up to Russert.

If you cross your eyes really hard and pound a few beers, you can trick yourself into believing Matthews is Russ.

=(

everyone should turn into williams and brokaw talking about this, they have some really really great stories about tim russert and are doing a great job celebrating him

Terrible, terrible news, I loved his work on Meet the Press. Just very sad that he missed out on the end of a historic election season, given his love of American politics.

Me too; especially with the election coming up. I'm sure he was looking forward to nailing McCain on some of his recent flip-flops

Thoughts and prayers for his family. I read something recently where a cardiologist was suggesting that AEDs be put into every so many homes and every major office. The time until death is just minutes after one goes into pulseless V-tach or V-fib. Restoring rhythm immediately is the best chance for survival. (Much better than only doing CPR and waiting for medical help.)

yeah, but lets face it, CBS news is a joke, and face the nation isnt very good. Meet the press is the crown jewel of the sunday morning shows.

I just dont think he will get it.

I like Mathews for what he is, but he isnt a journalist.

Damn, I just remember that book he wrote about he and his dad a few years ago. His dad's outlived him and he died on Father's Day weekend.

:(

Wow. I'm really choked up. This is shocking. I'm going to avoid this thread for fear of GAF disrespecting his passing.

Rest in Peace.

Just wow... this was really unexpected.

I can't imagine what it's like at MSNBC right now (I don't know if I want to watch). He seemed too relaxed to have a heart attack at such a young age. I guess it's just a reminder that our time is precious and any of us could go at any minute.

I can't imagine Meet the Press without him. I regularly watch Hardball and Chris Mathews would be terrible for Meet the Press since he never let's his guests finish their point. Russert knew that the show wasn't about him. It was about getting the guests to open up and reveal themselves by asking the right questions and then letting them talk.

doubt it.

"We now know who the democratic nominee will be."

RIP

Guys like Tim are all the more valuable as the media becomes increasingly partisan. He smacked down players of all political stripes and he did it with his deep knowledge of politics, long memory, and considerable intellect.

Man will he ever be missed. The Meet the Press contenders mentioned thus far cannot even approach the shadow of this man.
