I would change the topic title to - Exactly 15 years ago a tragedy occurred, FF13 was released. A series of games that actually buried FF and its sales, and the hole was so deep. It was probably the most massive damage to the franchise in its entire history, and it lasted for as many as 3 games. The first 13 was still bought, there was a circulation of about 7 million, because people did not know where they were being called, but the graphics was beautiful, 13 - 2 collapsed in sales to 3.5 million, and Lightning Returns - with difficulty take the mark of 1 million copies. But Square Enix found a very beautiful solution to this problem, they simply began to count all 3 games together and that's it, we have sales of 11 million copies...clowns.

That's a difficult one, every FF game plays a bit differently, the last 2 mainlines and FF7 spin offs went to hack and slash gameplay of you like that.
If you want to experience a good story and still have decent graphics try 10.
If you like faster paced ATB go for FFXIII
If you like medieval settings or school settings VIII and XI are the way to go.
If you can play 16 bit titles IV, V and VI are awesome

Just start with FFVII Remake and Rebirth.

And if you like it, go with what Same ol G Same ol G said.

Close, but at least FFXV had interesting combat and a great ending.

Didn't even bother to get to the ending of XIII. Quit at Gran Pulse.
I definitely don't agree on that i didn't like the cry by the campfire ending and the story was hold together with strings and ducttape.
The combat while not that bad was far from the normal ATB we were used to

And i played the whole FFXIII trilogy, in hindsight it was a lot better story and gameplay wise compared to FFXV.
(I also didn't like the sausagefest that was your party)

I guess that's your opinion.
For me this title has FF XV followed by FF XII.
IMHO FF xiii was "okayish".

After XV I didn't care to play XVI, just the remakes of VII.
That's fine.

I don't think there will ever be a consensus on any FF. Lol

Well, why, FF7 (Original), FF6 and FF9 well and partly FF10 (Because they made FF10-2) are probably the most stable parts in terms of fan ratingss. In the rest, opinions may of course differ, but not so much. And 13 consistently holds the title - if you want to see where the death of FF as a franchise began, you are welcome.

Eh, the hype for XIII leading up to its release honestly kept me alive during a rough patch in my life, so I can't be too rough on it.

I enjoyed the game well enough when it came out, too. But yeah, XIII-2 and Lightning Returns were much better.

I think a lot of people didn't like XIII because either they didn't understand the story and or knew how to play the game.
I liked it. Completed the game 4 times.

I'll be perfectly honest, when I first started playing, I didn't like it.
After giving it a fair shot, I ended up loving it.

I understood the story but still hated it because the characters were dogshit. The combat was extremely to figure out and the whole game could be easily finished by following a simple flow chart and the weird timing glitch/feature. Maybe the optional bosses required some mythical new strategy but the core game was brain dead nonsense.

FF13 was my guilty pleasure.

I know that it wasn't a good FF, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.

Except for that open grindy area in the end. That was shit.

A lot of people hate it, but I like it a lot.

I also enjoyed the sequels and I loved how S-E tried different things with it.

A technical disaster area on PC. You need multiple third-party patches to even run this shit (at least FFXIII-2 which I just started playing).

It’s a very special game, it was the only game that was so bad that it totally poisoned me against the entire franchise I quit ff after that one. One shit linear path of one corridor connecting to the next then you get to gran pulse and find out you are woefully underlevelled. I dont find battling enemies that can wipe your team out as you struggle to level up a fun mechanic. I was staring to get a little burned out of the series but this one pushed me over the edge.

Even trying to use synthesis to get anything good to make your party stronger was a total joke. Picked the wrong items to combine tough shit, here let me tell you it failed while keeping the rare mats that you spent ages grinding for. The game was blatantly made to require a guidebook for synthing items.

Fuck that game, it’s the only game I ever binned. Snapped in 2 and into the bin it went and i permanently left ff behind.

Hope you choke on your cake ff13

Shit FF game, but I can't deny it was one impressive looking game on the PS3. It ran very well, the OST was good, the graphics were stellar, the FMV was razor sharp. It was absolutely a looker.

But the game had no atmosphere, no charm, no downtime, no interaction.. there was nothing to see. It was full window dressing. But, I did get the platinum (its one you can do in a single playthrough).

In a sense this game kind of buried the franchise. FF wasn't of undisputed quality since this game. Its been a mixed bag since. XIV 1.0 was dumpster fire, XV was dumpster fire but sold well. XIV 2.0 was strong. XVI, VII Remakes are being received well.

released 15 years ago in Japan for PS3

Game is on discount on Steam right now, great time to check out the title if you haven’t

Steam version is dogshit. It was never patched.

Buy updated version on Windows Store - MUCH better performance.

Square just shot themselves in the foot.

I don't know how much the rest of you know about Japanese culture (I'm an expert), but honor and shame are huge parts of it. It's not like it is in America where you can become successful by being an asshole. If you screw someone over in Japan, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.

What this means is the japanese public, after hearing about this, is not going to want to purchase FFXIII for either system, nor will they purchase any of Square's games. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but Square has alienated an entire market with this move.

Square, publicly apologize and cancel FFXIII for 360 or you can kiss your business goodbye.

Definitely my most disliked FF game (not counting -2 crap). Characters are terrible, writing quality is even worse, story is confusing as hell. The whole thing boggles the mind as how it damaged FF franchise and SE financials.

Anyway, someone asking above on where to start with FF. IMO, PC modded FFVII is a great place. Modding on that is easy now and there are some amazing mods for graphics and QoL for gameplay.

Second place would be modded FFIX, same as above, mods push this to remake territory.

IMO, FFVII Remake series makes biggest impact if you played the OG. I love both Remake or Rebirth, but it wouldn’t have same impact if I haven’t played FFVII.

Where to start if i would like to get into FF?
Classic: Final Fantasy 6
PS1: Final Fantasy 9
PS2: Final Fantasy X

Modern Offerings: FF7 Remake then Rebirth

These are the safest and highly liked games.

Me personally? I’d tell someone to try 7 remake or final fantasy 16 for some action combat to see which one clicks with them but know both games have horrendous side quests so just ignore them.

Do you like old-school JRPGs? Why not start with the pixel remasters of the first 6 games? They're all good (even 2, with the updates to combat). They are short by modern RPG standards.

Then play the original FFVII, the most famous JRPG ever. Remake is not a replacement, as it's more a sequel told from the assumption one has played the original and offers a very different type of experience.

I saw this one got a lot of hate but I stayed away from the FF series for a long time due to disliking turn based combat. The PC Royal Edition of FFXV was the first in the series I played and quite liked it. Graphics were amazing, combat was pretty good and the story was good too after getting the background info on it. It did have some low points later on though.

I've got FF7 remake but haven't played it yet but am looking to try out some of the others and will put aside my aversion of turn based combat. If XIII is that bad I might skip that and maybe leave XVI till it's on a big discount. I'll get the X/X2 HD remaster I think.

Bought it for PS3 when I got back into console gaming. I expected it to be like FF7 and was pretty disappointed in the limited freedom and areas. I guess it opened up a bit towards the end but waaay too late IMO. I remember the combat system as being somewhat boring pretty far into the game but I think it might have just been the difficulty being set too low because I remember it getting way more engaging as the enemies got more challenging.

Booted it up on PS3 a year or so ago and immediately realized just how shit it runs. Probably looks fine playing via BC on Xbox but the PS3 version hasn't aged well.

I had to force myself to complete this. Great soundtrack, excellent graphics (for the time) and not much else. This was when FF lost me and has yet to win me back. I’ve had more fun with theatrhythm than any of the mainline games for the past decade+. Sad!

I'd say the original FF7 is a safe bet.
FF9 and FF6 are also great, but I have to admit I've never actually finished those two because they are looong.

If you liked FF4 I think FF6 might be the one that's closest:

Picked the XIII trilogy up used for cheap a couple years back but still haven’t gotten around to playing them. If I can get a bit more caught up with my backlog I definitely want to see what it’s all about. Going in expecting an underwhelming experience, more of getting a historical understanding of a period in gaming I missed out on.
