Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE review thread

I have not been following too much on the subject but how bad is the censorship on this game ?

I know they changed a lot of the clothing of the characters but the localization can't be that bad since it was done by Atlus.... right ?

They could ship it Thursday and it could still get to you on time depending on how far it is from you. Amazon ships my games the day before usually and I get them on time.
 
Very good scores, not bad at all actually. Atlus can craft any type of RPG experience decently well at worst

Well this is a bit of a weird one since it also makes money (or the project is invested in and earned from) through the sales of external products such as the music.
 
Thanks all for your responses re: this vs SO5; looks like I'll be picking up the LE of this on Friday and canceling my SO5 preorder for now.

shipments in Japan are based off retailer expectations not publisher expectations though

(not that Nintendo expected this to be a megahit or anything, just saying)

You need to have the right session attack skills equipped and session attacks and links are triggered by things like targeting enemy weaknesses, performing special performances, etc.

Session attacks can also be negated and cancelled if you miss, hit enemy resistances, etc.

Your entire party, not just the main 3, can do session attacks, it's just a matter of getting used to the rhythm of it.

It's like the Press Turn system, but unlike Press Turn system where you get a stats/crit bonus or an extra turn, the Session system has party follow up attacks that you link and work around. I personally find it more fun than Press Turn.

The budget would have to be big considering that they not only funded an HD RPG for the Wii U, but also had to fund 2 live stage concerts for the game, several different kinds of merchandise for the fans, a 18 track vocal soundtrack CD, and a variety of other events with their collaboration with avex.

Considering their comments and the fan reaction, the team behind the game and project would say that the investment was worth it. Nintendo on the other hand may think differently.
 
Great to hear that my Fortissimo Edition pre-order is most likely worth it :)

Much better reviews than I expected for a niche game on a dying console.
 
My CE hasn't shipped yet. Soon, I would guess.

Reviews and impressions form the import OT sound pretty good, and I really want to support this kind of strangeness as a consumer ^_^

It seems like the super upbeat story has been playing really well with a lot of reviewers.
 
Really want to pick this up, but Star Ocean 5 is around the corner, and I don't really like using my Wii U. On the other hand, I'd probably really enjoy this. So conflicted.
 
Really surprised to see so many high scores for this game. Didn't expect that. Got the CE pre-ordered and the sweetest thing about this is that Friday is a holiday here in Sweden, so the release here is actually tomorrow on the 23rd.

Been excited for this a while now and reading the positive reception on the battle system gets me hyped!

I rarely touch my Wii U but this seems like a game I shouldn't miss.

+ Combat System is fun and full of posibilities.
+ Art direction overall, specially the fantastic menus.
+ Many puzzles are very creative and make you think.
+ OST is excellent and a love letter to J-Pop fans.

- Graphics: Popping, lag, low quality textures.
- While an interesting mechanic, the "Topic" feature tends to bother more than it helps.
- Lack of Off-TV Play.
- Lack of ambition that wastes the game's potential.

Really glad this is receiving positive reviews. Definitely not starved for games to play at the moment, even on Wii U, but the Treehouse segment last week and these reviews have put this straight back on my radar.
 
Can someone point me in the direction of where they're serving crow for the doubters?

The premise from the trailers everyone got mad about was never really an issue for me, I was more just skeptical of the mashup concept itself (the first few trailers actually impressed me and helped more than hurt my opinion) along with changes to the localization, which I could've done without. Basically, I became more optimistic the more weeb-like the game got, which I think is the opposite of what everyone else thought. I was always considering the game, but good reviews may convince me to get this sooner than I otherwise would.

I was dissuaded by the initial premise but am now considering buying it to find anything that might even remotely filled the Persona sized hole in my 2016.
 
Reviews are actually much better than I expected, I was honestly thinking sub 6s given some of the Japanese impressions.

The reviews of people who actually played it were incredibly positive, but it suffered from the lack of any SMT or much FE on first impressions, some Japanese people weren't happy about how it was changed compared to the concept introduced in January 2013 either. But people who played it, loved it.

Lol, I wanted a dub aside from the songs, but I'm sure it didn't make financial sense to even bring this over and do it physically, so I can't complain too much about that. The game is in a tough spot.

Now, that line is put on the European version specifically because there is no other text language, which is a really unique situation in the region for a first-party published title. It hasn't happened for a long time.

On the North American version the the disclaimer will be on the back and the text language part almost certainly won't even appear on the Australian case, but in Europe that's kind of a big deal.

I have to confess I always had a level of interest in the game, but I'm definitely pleasantly surprised by the scores. Not accusing anyone in particular but I'm glad to see that in spite of some initial concerns, the game seems to have turned out just fine.

And yeah, while I plan to get Star Ocean first since it's the shorter game, I'm definitely coming back to this later in the year to make up for the lack of P5.

I'm almost always open minded if the game is genuinely good. Usually takes a genuinely repugnant subject matter and usually those get wrecked critically anyway.

That's fine. I think suggesting a lack of ambition is a little harsh though. I imagine the developers put a lot of work into the project.
 
It was always going to be a good game because Atlus don't tend to make outright bad RPGs. I'm just reading these reviews and it sounds like Fire Emblem's existence doesn't really serve much and seems to just be a replacement for the Religious stuff in other MegaTen games. It feels like wasted potential.
At least Nintendo's involvement means Europe can actually play this one at the same time as North America. Though I'm still not feeling this game, if I see it cheap (unlikely) then I'll grab it at the first chance I get. I've still got Xeno X to finish when I plug my WiiU back in.

Initially I agree. But going back to some of the first footage of the game, I remember trailers (that didn't have any gameplay that I recall) that were all the hell over the place that left you going, what the fuck just happened? Very surprised (and happy!) to see the game doing this well, eager to go at it this weekend.
