Probably so that they only need one console, and if you want the drive you buy the addon. Right now they need two, so this would streamline production.

There are plenty of people who don't want/need the disk version and if this allows them to scale up production of the digital version in a meaningful way then what's the problem?

Because then people who don't need the disc drive would have to pay $100 more? I get from Sony's perspective yeah it would be great to make everyone pay $500, but this lets each person decide.

Having an external disc drive and a single console SKU makes too much sense. Sony is going to mess it up somehow. Probably throwing a proprietary connector into the mix or not making it compatible with the current digital only PS5's. I've already written off it not supporting CD's like the current PS5 drives do.

At first I thought that it was to be able to buy a player compatible with previous sony consoles but there doesn't seems to be a lot of rumors about Sony amping up their emulation software so I don't know, maybe to buy discs for those that have a digital version.

Oh I get it. The combination of the Disc-less version and the detachable disc drive will cost more than the PS5 disc version.

Sorry, but who really wants a separate disc drive for their console.
Sony is already, affectively making one SKU, with one version which has a internal disc drive and the other doesn't. All the effort making an external disc drive which most likely will use more materials than what is required to produce the disc version PS5.

Not necessarily, the digital console is cheaper anyway they stand to save money while boosting revenue in accessories.

The last time the disc drive failed on me was when I owned a PS1. Now it's only needed to copy the data once and check the disc when the game launches. It shouldn't fail unless Sony is cost cutting too much.

And you don't understand product design and manufacturing if you really think selling two interworking products is not sacrificing design and makes it cheaper to produce.
Sony is doing whatever they can to get out of physical market because digital is all the control they can have over pricing of their games.
They will slowly inch their way there.
I guess we have to wait and see how the console looks... if it's just a usb drive attached on the cable lol, then sure - it does not impact neither design of the console of manufacturing

If the digital price is no more than the current price then the disk drive is like the current difference that all seems pretty good right?
They just gotta make sure they have atleast an decent split of disk drives manufactured compared to the digital only.

I'm pretty sure it's just the digital console with a special developer firmware it's been tested by that guy on YouTube that buys broken consoles and tries to fix them.

Disc-less will be a cheaper entry point, not that they need it for now as they are selling out all of their stock pretty fast, but this kind of demand won't be forever.

I can see scalpers selling the disc attachment.
I fully believe there will be a Slim next year especially if they move the APU to the 4-5nm process.
But this whole detachable thing sounds a bit weird.
The way Tom Henderson is telling the story it seems a strategy that goes in the opposite direction compared to the current one.
Right now production is 80:20 (75:25 best case) in favour of the disc version because with the disc they can justify a 100$ higher price (although the device probably costs 15-20$ to them).
With this SKU instead suddenly the digital version would become the default version and the price cannot be that of the disc version.
That seems a bit off, imo there will be a Slim and the digital version will get the option to be upgraded with some kind of disc drive add on, they will continue to have the SKU with the disc drive already in as their main product.
But we'll see, I might be wrong.

The moment consoles don't have physical drives at all is the moment I switch to pc completely for the better performance and far better market environment vs closed garden bs.

I actually really like this idea. The situation would offer some nice flexibility as well. And if the disc drive goes bad you can just replace that, rather than trying to get the whole console fixed..... And that is usually the main thing that goes bad in the first place. The only downside is just another peripheral that you have to have in your media console. Otherwise it's all good in my opinion.

I cry about Xbox and hate PlayStation.
1) "I cant make a decision whether to buy digital or physical version...perhaps i'll buy the digital first and if necessary i'll buy the add on in the future!" < save the decision making process for the consumer
2) Entice people to buy the cheaper version (the one without disk drive)
3) Sony can just focus on 1 SKU instead of 2.
4) Sony can produce more PS5 since there is only 1 SKU. <<<<<<i think this is the main reason of the add on disk drive here, to hit sales target for 2023 onwards
5) The attach disk drive accessory can be used for future PS6 and so on if required

totally expecting this, if this is a whole new exterior redesign.
like a proprietary plug/play mechanism instead of a simple usb cable.
so it won't work with existing digital edition consoles.

If this was the case, why are they producing so few digital PS5s in comparison to disc drive ones? One would think it would be the other way around if what you're saying was their current plan.
I feel like Sony is getting away with murder when it comes to the size and physical design of their console. i.e. its big, ugly and isn't stable, mines on its side and doesn't sit securely in the stand thing.
A separate disc drive is off the charts ugly but I get why they would go down that path to save/make more money.
