It's a plot point kind of lost in this film, Asuka actually has the lowest sync rate, in the original series her intro battle is only won because Shinji is in the plug with her. The film does keep her "I'm the best pilot I don't need these losers" mentality despite the fact she always fails.

That scene is absolutely the best in all of Rebuild. It completely overshadows its equivalent in the TV show.

They play it way bigger than in the show because they have to make up for the lack of character development. Still, it enhances the emotion so much that it works.
