Toronto-Age |OT3| Going Off the Rails on a Gravy Train

come in my shame circle
I'd heard about the Jane/Finch reputation but when I passed by the intersection itself it didn't seem that bad. I saw a mini-mall (No Frills, Shoppers, McDs, Tim Ho etc) and even some kids playing on small amusement rides set up the parking lot. The one odd thing that stuck out to me was the steel bars protecting the Popeye's windows. Otherwise it seemed..normal?

My aunt has lived in Jane/Finch since the 1970s. I spent my first 5 years of life living there as well. I've never had a problem with it but I am a black dude.

Oh but there was the one time when I was 4 sitting on my aunt's front porch having an ice cream cone and watching a police chase go on right in front of me.

It's not a super bad area, but it is still a place I'd put on as an area to avoid. Same with the Entertainment District at night.

There aren't shootings or stabbings there ALL the time...

Fun fact: when I was at koei, our office was technically in the entertainment district (Adelaide), and one morning we found sprays of blood on our front door enterance. A stabbing happened there one night.

I would bang a hot farmer!

Maybe a bunch of fans had a Dynasty Warriors meetup and got carried away.

Only advice I have is that unless you have skills/experience in a high demand field, try to see if you can't get a job here first before coming if possible. Toronto is atrociously bad for job seekers at this time.

Trades
Medical

Seem to be the big fields that I can name.

The Prairies, Alberta, and the regions up north are where the jobs seem to be as well

Thanks! That's the first thing I considered before thinking of moving. If my plans work out I'll probably be heading there around June next year so will definitely be applying for jobs before coming into the country :) Just seems the safest thing to do really. I currently work in IT and am unsure whether I wish to continue doing it in Toronto or try something completely different. Will definitely take a look at the market and see what the oppurtunities and money is like.

I just read that Comwave offers internet packages too, such as $50 a month for 25mbps and unlimited bandwidth.

Anyone know how their service is? Seems reasonable. I never hear them mentioned when people give suggestions.

Just sick of Techsavvy outages, and I know it's Rogers fucking around, but its annoying.

Where are you located? I've been with Teksavvy since Feb and I don't remember one outage.

Every time someone from Bell comes to set something up they fuck up my TekSavvy lines. It's ridiculous how frequently I've had to get a technician to come out, actually. It's almost as though they do it on purpose.

Dammit, Brinbe! Fix yo damn twitter! I gotta know if she's ready for anal!

Edit: The Works (aka the Worst) on Danforth is now closed. Damn, I think it was only open there for about 2 years.

I was playing Rune Factory 3 yesterday and got hit by like 3 hurricanes in the span of a week. Life imitates art, apparently.

Hey Toronto-GAF,

I have a quick question for you guys. I'm moving to Toronto next month for my Master's Degree at UofT and I'm currently looking at my internet options. TekSavvy seems like the best bet, but I can't decide on a plan.

Basically I'm looking at either DSL 25 or Cable 30. Probably unlimited either way. Is there any real disadvantage to going with DSL? It's quite a bit cheaper, at $58 a month for unlimited vs $75 for unlimited on cable. I'm also considering this plan from ElectronicBox. It's pretty well priced but finding impressions of them is a lot harder than finding impressions of Teksavvy. Has anyone had any experience with them as a provider?

Anyway I'm sure some of you in here have experience with Teksavvy, internet providers in general, and all that. Figured it might be a good place to ask and I don't know much about Cable vs DSL, or about the Internet plans available in Toronto, etc. If any of you are on a good plan that you like feel free to suggest others.

dsl :should: be a dedicated line
cable = shared, i would not advise it for downtown (uptown cable speeds are good)

1. i would get the line that's most reliable, that should be dsl for you
2. you're going to be at uoft most of the time, they have internet, you won't get your money's worth at home

Sounds good. Yes I was worried getting cable downtown would mean dealing with my connection slowing down a lot. DSL is looking more attractive, then.

And I'll be at UofT a lot but I do want good internet at home too. I got an apartment a block away from the university so I'll be going back and forth from Uni a fair amount, I think. It's not a big commute or anything. Might opt for 300 GB/mo instead of unlimited though.

mullet2000 Honestly I wouldn't get unlimited and just use their zap the cap option if you go over the limit consistently.

Matt Smith, Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill are going to be at Fan Expo this year (DW related).

If you want a photo op with all three it seems you will need to pay for the TARDIS GOLD package: SIX HUNDRED AND NINETY NINE CANADIAN DOLLARS!!!

Nope.

Might grab the $29 general admission.

I'm a huge fan of the show but I'm not going to be taken advantage of.

Go for the photobomb option. It's cheaper.

Seriously? HobbyStar (and any actors enabling this) can eat shit.

I'm not even a DW fan but this makes me mad.

Hahahahahaha

Fuck that shit so hard.

I'm assuming they'll have their own panel, so I'll check that out if it's part of the general admission. It probably won't.

Yeah I though about doing that. Still, 8-12 is like...THE time I'd be using my home internet. So it kinda sucks.

I think I'll just go with the 300 GB option. I shouldn't hit that anyway.

That's what I thought...

Even then, Teksavvy emails you and gives you plenty of warnings. You only got yourself

to blame

The $29 general admission that I paid is exclusively for the panel without priority seating or photo op. It is not part of the Fan Expo admission. You still need to pay extra for that.

I don't live or work near any of these, but PayPal is offering $5 for coffees (making it free if it's <$5) at 25 coffee shops in Toronto until 31 July. You need to install their app on your phone though, so if that's not for you, then no free coffee. (I already use it and haven't had any issues so far.)

I don't work for PayPal if you're thinking I do.
Yeah they're pushing this thing hard. They had a deal where you got free burgers at select restaurants awhile back as well.

I am totally a burger shill

Barely worth the time. Teksavvy's hands are tied, and while I'm sure he can try and escalate large issues, it seems like they are at the mercy of Rogers and/or Bell. I don't think it's quite clicked with ISP's that for many people internet is as important as running water.

That being said, thankfully after upgrading to cable 45/4 I haven't had any issues.

DSL will require a phone line. If you plan on not having a landline, you will have to pay a dry loop fee on top of the DSL cost.

I would do it anyways to get an escalation ASAP. I know it helped EM and it would've been better for me to do it initially.

Worse case they can send out DSL modems though that still sucks.

Fair enough. I was frustrated last time around when I was having connectivity issues. So glad there hasn't been a problem for a while. I know the nature of their business and it must be tough for them, but at the end of the day I don't really care about Rogers' issues when I'm paying Teksavvy.

I really need to post more in this thread so here goes.
Went to the aquarium last week. You guys were right, there were some sections where I could just sit and watch the tanks for a good 20 minutes or so. Sadly the 3 children I brought with me just wanted to go see the next thing. Got through it in about 3 hours. Not bad. The glass tube conveyor belt section was worth the price of admission alone. Had a blast and even though the kids practically ran through it they did really love it too.

Also briefly talked to Sarah Thomson yesterday down in the beaches. She was going on about lowering the cost of internet and cell phone charges from Bell and Rogers. I didn't think a mayor would have that kind of power. Wouldn't that be a provincial/federal action?

FIGHT ME! >=[

Eh, I dont care about leafs anymore. I mainly blame the insane fans who question why the team is bad, yet THEY are the ones who are rewarding their failure. Of course the wont give a shit since they are making billions anyway.

meh

Meet me at JaBistro bruh. I will end you.

Damn. JaBistro will be a good last meal for you. We aren't rewarding failure. Thatoney is more from corporate suits than dedicated fans. The dedicated fans are there and frustrated. They're just loyal to a fault. Yes. MLSE will always make money and there isn't a huge incentive to change so long as they take it in, but while I was hesitant at first, I trust in Shanaplans! He's already made moves to drag our franchise into the present and while I feel Nonis and Carlyle should've been canned, I definitely feel it's only a matter of time before they're gone. You can't make a sudden change to right a ship, it takes a bunch of smaller and slow turns since so much is wrong with the Leafs.

So, it goes back to, "what is different this time? Leafs always say they're going to change and improve but never do." Well, for starters, Shanahan isn't a corporate suit; he isn't here to make money, he's here to turn this ship around and win. Second, this new assistant GM is exactly what the analytics fans have been clamouring for for a few years now. Third, the East is still a shit division, so there is still a chance. Fourth, we have been striving to change out draft policy and Nylander is a step towards making us more of a skilled western team instead of a team of "tough" players.

So, how is Shanahan different from Burke? Burke wanted to win too, and he got fired for bashing heads against the org. However, Shanahan also has Leiweke backing him, and this org spent a LOT on Leiweke and he's had results. A lot of the hockey blogs and stats nerds are backing this new GM, when they were even shitting on Burke. I think change will come, albeit slowly, but it is coming.

NOW GO CHOKE ON THAT DELICIOUS JABISTRO ABURI, FUCK FACE! >={
