Trails in the Sky: FC on Steam/GOG July 29th

Xanadu Next, Dinosaur Resurrection, Lord Monarch for Windows, Sorcerian Forever/Original, Vantage Master v2, and maybe Brandish 4 were likely built with some of these tools, given their proximity to FC's PC release. How likely are the chances that Sara will run into similar issues with old tools/libraries should XSEED deign to publish these titles? At least one of the games (Xanadu) already has a fan translation patch, so most of the work would exist on the programming end.

Every game Sara works on gives her more experience with Falcom's programming quirks, so if we do indeed raid Falcom's back catalog over time, it'll hopefully just get easier for her with each release.

We just have to time them well so she doesn't die or go postal along the way. ;)

I wonder if I should wait for all improvements to be released.

Wow, now I'm not sure if I want to play the PC version until at least the first patch. The HD interface sounds nice too.

I kind of feel this is an overreaction considering only minor cosmetic improvements are in the pipeline (besides the bestiary which is an extra feature as it is). The game wouldn't be coming out now if it was going to be changed significantly later.

Why is it an overreaction? I already played the PSP version. I'm buying the Steam and GOG versions to support the release of more games in the series on PC but I have no reason to play it again immediately after it's released if I think the improvements coming later would make it a better experience.

I've read that steam is variable from 30 and up.

are we talking % cut? its 30% on everything, including DLC or sub fees

its why you dont see new mmos on steam, they dont want to give Valve a cut of the subs... until they are doing shit 6 months later and they need that sweet Steam exposure (Final Fantasy 14, Elder Srolls Online, im sure Wildstar will come out on steam before the end of the year)

Yeah I'm buying it day one to support these awesome folk, but I won't play it for a while, mostly because I don't have the time for a good ol rpg nowadays.

I've found some older figures that are over 30% but I am not sure how accurate they are. They cover all those details with a NDA and the most recent interview in 2011 says that they have a fluid revenue split depending on the game and not a set point. I am guessing they use the 70/30 rate as it is the most common split.

My reasoning exactly. I need as many incentives as possible. As it is the chances of getting through the entire game when I already played it are minimal.

I'll be buying it on release and seeing how it runs but it's going to be tough to even start when the backlog is large and this game is huge and not particularly conducive to replays.

On the other hand I want to start SC as soon as possible just because of that damn cliffhanger.

And considering how long the game is and my lack of time to play, I might as well get started lol.

Great blog post. I really appreciate the effort of writing all those technical difficulties down - it's really interesting and gives great insight in the job that had to be done. Reading through the problems, it sounds like a miracle that Sara got the game under control eventually.

Hopefully SC will be smooth sailing now that the work on FC is done.

That blog post was a good read. It's always interesting to get a peek at what goes on behind the scenes.

I started FC yesterday and so far I'm really enjoying it. It's surprisingly fun considering how slow the beginning is. Basically nothing happens for the first five or so hours yet I was never bored. Ended up playing something like 9 hours and I expect today will be similar.

I was a little worried I wouldn't be able to finish it before Disgaea 4 comes out but at this rate I don't think that'll be a problem.

Are some of the text changes Kloe's techniques?
Was hesitant to reply to this just in case, but now Hatsuu's mentioned it on twitter...

Yeah. They're back to Kaempfer/Sturm/Lichtkreis like they were in the Japanese version instead of Impose/Encroach/Radiant Plash. The first one'll be Kämpfer eventually, but special characters are super low priority, so yeah.

Actually that raises a question that I nearly forgot: are proper quotation marks in for PC, or is it still brackets? I recall that brackets had to be used on PSP due to Falcom's coding, but that was just handing the script to them to implement, no diving in and seriously reworking the game. Of course I can see that being too deep an issue to fix, and a relatively minor one at that.

Single quotes. Double quotes are... not technically feasible, shall we say, thanks to decisions made during the game's original development cycle. This will be true for FC and SC.

(Also special characters getting added eventually means someone's going to have to go back and change every instance of Loewe in SC to Löwe, aren't they. ._. )

[] = ' ' now. Double quotes aren't really an option for now, but maybe somewhere down the line we can change all of those ' to | in the script and then make | LOOK like " in the game instead, but for now, the single quotes are in place.

Can double quotes be implemented with two single quotes?

This was tried; spacing makes it look janky and ugly. Not really an option.

It is simply some sort of weird encoding issue? Seems straight bizarre and I'm interested as I played the PSP version and can't wait for the PC port.

Thanks to being a technical third-party to this and being under an NDA, I really can't say more than that (and I'm always worried I've said too much already

). Suffice to say that the " symbol isn't usable in the game text.

So it's like reading Lord of the Rings again. Works well enough for me!

Read the article about the issues with the English PC version... shame that there's not gonna be a way to import my PSP save into the game or into TITS2 when that finally comes out. It's a really great game but I'm not in that much of a hurry to replay it so soon.

I won't have time to play the game for the second time with so many Vita games getting released, I can afford to wait.

High five. Way back when I was starting on the drafts for the SC main scenario, I was already putting my own foot down about "fixing" the brackets thing, and on realizing that " was out as a punctuation option, I was like "hell, if it was good enough for the Professor, it's good enough for this!"

Wasn't the name "Radiant Plash" voice-acted? How was that handled?

Description of the S-Craft reads: "A Radiant Plash. Revives K.O.ed and heals 1500HP."

It's just throwing in the old title into the description, since that is basically what it means anyway. I thought that was the best way to go about it since many hardcore fans of Kiseki wanted the German to come back but we still had the English name within the game no matter what.

Ah, okay. Thanks for the response!

Maybe I'm missing something (probably I'm missing something, it's always silly to speculate without seeing code :P), but couldn't you just map another unused symbol (e.g. §) to " when displaying the text? I mean, in the end what a symbol is is nothing more than a pair of coordinates in a bitmap font texture.

Kaempfer/Sturm/Lichtkreis

Err.... so what's the correct pronunciation for those? I like that Kloe's spells were reverted back to German, though. It just sounds more cool that way.

It's possible they aren't allowed to do that. Official localizations have that constraint.

Hopefully the sales will allow XSEED to hire more help to translate future releases more quickly.

Does anyone know if game keys can be redeemed on both platforms, like the Witcher series for example.

They are allowed to make huge changes to the game and the game's code, but wouldn't be allowed to replace a symbol? I kinda doubt that. However, I also doubt that the problem is as simple.

Maybe it breaks something, then. Not really a big deal.

The code sounds like it's the Jenga tower from hell, so yeah it's probably a pain in the ass and at risk of breaking something. I do think apostrophes are a good compromise though, as those have been used in literature for quotation marks while brackets have not.

Yeah, I spent a while yesterday trying to imagine a scenario where you could remap angle brackets to single quotes but couldn't possibly actually cause them to display as double quotes, and I came up short.

I don't know if an XSEED staffer would be able to answer this, but how long would FC or SC have to be selling for until the time is right to decide if it's worth localizing The 3rd?
