Trails in the Sky: FC on Steam/GOG July 29th

I know it's easy to suggest things like this when you're not in the position to do much for it, but has anyone considered making an OT2 for the PC English release of this? Alternatively, maybe Varion, who I see is still active and even posted in this topic yesterday, could freshen up the OP of the original OT to make it more current with the new info, trailers, etc? There's going to be a decent number of people on here playing/replaying this game, myself included, so having a community topic to discuss stuff would certainly be useful.

Myself and others are collaborating to have a thread up prior to release.

Don't worry, it's getting the treatment it deserves.
Hopefully we'll be able to introduce a lot more gaffers to the franchise.
Spread the word here, on steam and everywhere else, let's help make this a success for Xseed.

I went to gamestop to convert a $20 dollar bill into a $20 dollar steam card today. There cash registers wouldn't let them sell it so I left with my cash. I was gonna use that to get this game haha. I usually just use my check card, but I had a $20 lying around so I thought I would just get a code this time.

Gamestop fails again.

I might be missing something obvious here, but why will they only be able to use the majority of the PS3 assets? Anything exclusive in the PS3 version that isn't present in this?

I'm not complaining, just curious. :p

It's basically impossible to get everything without a guide. Not sure if I'd suggest a first playthrough with a guide though.

That's vaguely disappointing. The game is pretty long isn't it? Not sure how I feel about having to go through it twice unless NG+ is a ton of replayability.

never mind, answered below

Do you have a Best Buy, CVS, 7-11, Target or Walmart nearby?

I guess I'll wait until the patch to play it then.

It's pretty much nothing but a few interface elements. The game itself will still be eminently playable on day one. (Still glad the game's getting the HD interface, though.)

Oh, they're getting the PS3 assets? Funny, I could swear they just re-used the ones in the PC version back to it.

The PS3 remaster versions used mostly PC assets, but did get reworked, HD-ified interface graphics.

It's basically like every other monster bestiary that has ever been in a game ever.

Probably the cruelest are the "bonus points" you can earn on SOME missions.
Two in particular I remember was "don't let _____ die" (which might throw you off given the objective of MOST fights) and survive the battle after that (which is really hard *unless* it's New Game +).
And the other was "starting" a mission before even accepting it, iirc, in the Roan territory (you have to find the fella/treasure en route).

I thought that the early missable point was hard to avoid as well. Something involving choosing option A instead of B in a dialogue. This game is hell for people who want to get everything :P

Also, I'm glad that Xseed is making changes to the game after the launch. Communicating with fans is one thing that Xseed does really well, even though I would say that Tom might even be a bit overzealous at times :) Especially when it comes to defending their games.

We haven't received them yet, so it's more like we'll take whatever Falcom allows us to have. They've approved use of them and are gathering them now to give to us, so they could send us some things or they could send us every little thing we could possibly use. Don't know, so until then it's not right to say we'll be allowed to use every single existing asset.

Ah that makes sense, thanks for the reply. It's already been said by others but I always love how great you guys are at communicating with us btw. :)

There is a target and wal-mart a few miles away. I just happened to be at the mall and thought I would get a code. Its no big deal. I will just use my check card on steam when the game releases.

I know that TC is apparently not extremely connected to the first two parts, but does that mean that there's no save data transfer/bonus? I own the PSP version of FC but never got very far at all, and so while I'd rather play this on a handheld I'm debating just getting the PC version during a sale and playing that instead thanks to the improved translation. Since I feel TC being released on PSN is somewhat unlikely, having a reason to stay on PC might sway me more in that direction.

There is a save data transfer bonus. You can get a couple of accessories for transferring an SC save into 3rd, and one of them is really good, allowing you to basically spam crafts with one character from the beginning of the game.

Ah, I see. Glad to see it's getting some TLC by fans.

I try! I've been working on FC since last year (not programming-wise, that's all Sara), so it's nice to finally be able to actively talk about our work beyond, "Nothing special to report yet." So long as it's asked kindly, I don't mind answering any question that doesn't breach NDA.

We had every intent to add whatever PSP features we could from the beginning, though the differences in the code between PSP and PC gave rise to some “Frankensteining” issues along the way. Here are some things we added from the PSP version of the game:
I'm curious, are there features from the PSP version that you originally intended to include, that won't be making it in?

None that we originally intended to include- everything that we originally intended will be making it into the PC version. That's mostly everything to include, even, since it's all the major enhanced features. The only thing currently not in is the Monster Guide, but that's just because of the work that's going into it. It'll be an item in the game at launch, just that when you click on it, it'll say it's not yet available. We'll be sure to notify everyone once it's been updated, though.

Wow, now I'm not sure if I want to play the PC version until at least the first patch. The HD interface sounds nice too.

Guess I'll be going with the PC version, then! Which brings me to another question- I know a guide was linked earlier in the thread, but is there a known good one that only covers the side-quest stuff, or is that too integrated into everything else to be worth making? I'm not someone who really cares about getting 100% of all the items in games most of the time, but I do care a lot about missing quests and story content, and it sounds like it's really easy to do that in this game. I don't really want to play with a full walkthrough my first time through, but I also don't want to miss things as I doubt I'll have time to NG+.

Thanks. Just realised it's a trilogy.
Quick question: does the Trails in the Sky that's available on PSN for vita include all three chapters?
If it did we'd be eagerly anticipating Zero no Kiseki/Trails of Zero for Vita right now.

So no. The games are massive, which is why it's taken so long for SC to come out.

So, does that mean SC will actually have a release on the vita? Please, say yes.

Any reason there'll be to pick up the PC version over the PSP version? I kinda wanna go for the PSP version (because handheld), but I don't wanna feel like I'm gimping myself or something. Especially for SC.

Last I heard it's set to get a PSP digital release, which generally means Vita compatibility. It won't be the prettiest solution but it'd work.

Awesome. Thanks, for the reply. Anyway, I should've picked it up when it was on sale for $17 on PSN. Now it's $44. Damn me!

Sure, no problem!
Widescreen and HD, there's no content difference.
Actually the localization and terminology will be tweaked, and I initially was going to ask if there was any chance for a PSP update before realizing just how unlikely that'd be with sending an updated script to Falcom and dealing with all that crap on PSP since it'd probably only be for the digital version and a full redownload (though it'd be nice if it happened even if I'd likely never bother!) so it may be better to go PC if you can. I'm sure someone will document the changes if that's not an option though.

You can patch retail PSP games just fine.

Do we know which version of FC (gog or steam) delivers the higher operating margins for XSEED?

If I'm going to pay, I'd pay the one that gives them more profit.

It doesn't seem to be something done often though, I only recall it with LBP. And I can imagine it'd still be a pain regardless.

Indeed, it'd be easier to just put up a new version for download like what Gaijinworks did for Class of Heroes 2.

I read in a article that GOG has a 70/30 revenue split unless the developers get a royalties advance.

I don't know about steam.

Neither have ever confirmed but they are both supposed to take 30 percent. We only get this secondhand from developers. Humble Store / Humble Widget is supposed to be the only common store that takes less.

Steam is the same.

If I remember right Origin actually takes the least, until you pass a certain sales threshold.

We ended up having to use some rather old tools in some situations nonetheless, as some DOS tools were included which had no real alternatives. We would have rebuilt or replaced these tools as necessary, but they were from external and likely defunct companies, and as such did not include source code. Replacing them in this situation would have required even more major changes.
Xanadu Next, Dinosaur Resurrection, Lord Monarch for Windows, Sorcerian Forever/Original, Vantage Master v2, and maybe Brandish 4 were likely built with some of these tools, given their proximity to FC's PC release. How likely are the chances that Sara will run into similar issues with old tools/libraries should XSEED deign to publish these titles? At least one of the games (Xanadu) already has a fan translation patch, so most of the work would exist on the programming end.
