Trails of Cold Steel (Sen no Kiseki) coming to PS3, Vita in North America, Fall 2015

so...

Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter
Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter
Trails in the Sky 3rd Chapter
All together are on PSP as "Trails in the Sky"

Then we have
Zero
Ao
Sen
Sen II (no Kiseki)

And... Sen I and II together are being released as Trails of Cold Steel? Do I have that right? Zero and Ao aren't being localized?
3rd, Zero, and Ao may or may not be localized. XSEED hasn't answered on them yet, all we know for certain is Sen and Sen II are being localized. You've got the timeline down pat, just make sure to keep Zero/Ao (Crossbell) separate from Sen/Sen II (Erebonia). None of these games have been released in combined form, but they're supposed to feed into each other in succession.

Can someone map out the 'history' of Trails releases, noting which ones are (or are being) localized? Because I think some of us are a bit confused

I understand they all basically exist in the same world but use different characters, but I have no sense of which one is what.

You guys rock, thanks for the responses. I already have TitS but didn't get far. I did, however, really dig the combat system. Is it similar in the newer games?

Thanos acquires the fully powered Infinity Gauntlet in The Avengers: Infinity War, but loses when all the superheroes team up together to stop him.

EDIT:

OK... do I have this right?

so...

1.Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter
2. Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter
3. Trails in the Sky 3rd Chapter
All exist together as a single game on PSP as "Trails in the Sky"

Then we have (same world, different characters/region)
4. Zero
5. Ao
6. Sen
7. Sen II (no Kiseki)

Seems to be right, except I think Sen II is still being released separately, but confirmed for localization.

So we ARE NOT getting:
  • Sky 3, the last game in Liberl
  • Zero and Ao, Crossbell games
We ARE getting:

  • Sen and Sen II, Erebonia games

Localisation blog post. The damn thing is already at the tail end of editing and Sen 2 is being translated as we speak. Oh, and it'll be entirely voiced. Xseed is crazy.

Reading this it makes sense why they skipped to Cold Steel and they certainly left the door open to go back and localize the other games down the road. I was originally going to just buy Cold Steel and let them sit until Zero/Ao were in English, but I guess if the head of the company that makes it says "we designed this game to be a good starting point" then I'll play them day 1

Shame there's no PC version, maybe high steam sales numbers will convince falcom to shift more focus on PC in the future.

Because let's be honest, how successful is a VITA release going to be?

I'm not sure if it's how you meant for it to come off, but it's a bit disingenuous to label all three distinct games as a single game, especially considering the extraordinary length of the first two. Also, 3rd is widely considered an epilogue that serves to lead into what follows; the main protagonists' story ends in 2nd.

Do games with Japanese audio really sell poorly? I mean I'd figure that the target audience for these games wouldn't really care as much.

The other factor to consider is that licensing Japanese voicework of that scale is extraordinarily expensive, to the point that dubbing it all over (or just stripping out voicework period) is often more economical.

When Ken and I were in Falcom’s office and proposed the English title, they immediately smiled and said, “Actually, we once considered using the word ‘Steel’ in the title ourselves, so that’s perfect. We like it.”
It's also worth noting that Falcom broached the subject of getting Sen no Kiseki over here ahead of the other games. So this confirms that XSEED was pressured by them in some way.

^^ SC's most likely coming out this summer, certainly before Trails of Cold Steel according to the blog post.

Leaving them was my plan too since so many ardent fans insist it would be sacrilege to play Sen first. I think I might trust Falcom though and just play them as soon as I get my grubby little hands on them

Vita alone? Probably not all that well considering the scale of the games. Which is why it's on both ps3 and vita and between the 2 of them hopefully there are results (at least until Sen 2 is out, if Sen 3 is also just on those 2 systems, then god help it when it comes to release over here). It's not like ps4 has many jrpgs going for it currently, so the crowd that these games go after, should mainly still be set on vita/ps3.

Is it cross platform for Sony users? I'm not really familiar with playstation network since I'm PC only.

Yeah there is, before Sen.

Cold Steel is probably near the end of the year, considering they still need some editing, recording and QA. I would think October or November seems like a realistic date for that game. So if SC is 'before Cold Steel' that could mean it's still months away.

That's okay, but I was really hoping for a surprise early summer announcement.

Can anyone tell me if I can get in to this series with this game without playing TitS?

I tried trails on psp and just couldn't get in to it. Too much reading for my liking. Very slow paced.

Is SEN much different? Better visuals? Different gameplay?

Any info would help. I really want a deep rpg on vita.

I'm so excited to know that we're getting these games. As long as we're getting them, I don't really care in what order they come.

Well, the wait for SC is still painful, but at least we know it's soon™. I can't even imagine the pain that the people who played it on PSP have gone through.

From the blog, they said the games can be played out of order so people who are new to the series can start on the newer games and go back to the older ones.

I was also planning on not touching it until the 3 previous games were out, but at this point, I'll leave it on my shelf until Cold Steel II is released. I'd love to play it right away, but after FC, I don't think I can take another painful cliffhanger.

Sen is apparently more accessible, but not in the story department. It's still going to develop through meticulous world-building and establishment of character backstory, with combat acting as a bridge across side-quests and plot milestones.

I am quoting Dio with some notations based on the blog post

Beginning with the 6th game in the series, the beginning of the 'Kiseki games,'

Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky (Sora no Kiseki) [CURRENTLY ON PSP]
Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky Second Chapter [CURRENTLY BEING WORKED ON FOR PSP]

This is a duology about Joshua and Estelle.

Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky The 3rd
[NOT BEING WORKED ON, BUT POSSIBLE IF SERIES SELLS WELL]

This is an epilogue with new story threads expanding into the rest of the series.

Legend of Heroes 7:

Legend of Heroes: Zero no Kiseki
Legend of Heroes: Ao no Kiseki

[NEITHER OF THESE BEING WORKED ON. NON-LOCALIZED PC VERSIONS EXIST SO ITS POSSIBLE IF SERIES SELLS WELL, BUT MAYBE ONLY ON PC]

This is a duology set in the Crossbell part of the same world as the Trails in the Sky. Considered by many to be even better than Sky at some points, as well as better gameplay wise.

Legend of Heroes 8:

Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel (Sen no Kiseki)
Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel II

[BOTH BEING WORKED ON FOR VITA ETC]

This is a duology? set in Erebonia and what we're talking about now.

Nayuta no Kiseki is a spinoff unrelated to any of this.

MY notations in CAPS based on my understanding of their blog post.

The blog post is great and answers a lot of questions. I can't believe they fooled us for 1 1/2 years already. :) Everyone was afraid that Trails might stop getting new releases in English, when they already worked on Sen.

Also nice to see that the the other three games are still very much on the table. I assume that they will want to release future episodes in a timely fashion, so that I still have my doubts that they can somehow work on 3rd or Ao in-between, but it's nice to see regardless. Hopefully people will support this release and the series going forward.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky Steamspy figures: 106,376
Trails of Cold Steel Japanese Vita sales: 137,746

Vita will bankrupt Falcom.

Still no estimate on when SC will be out.

If it's in Sony QA probably soon. I'd imagine before September.

Not sure why you are posting Japanese sales when he was clearly referring to sales in the west.

He's asking for Falcom to shift focus from Vita to PC. Falcom is a Japanese publisher. They're not going to dump the platform that nets them the highest sales in Japan until it's super dead.

Shift more focus to PC, as in: More than nothing at all. I don't see him saying that they are supposed to stop developing for Vita.

My understanding is that Sen's story does not complete at Sen 2, making it at least a trilogy, but the length is unknown because that's as far as the series has gotten in Japan.

It is typical of Japanese companies to care more about domestic sales. However, I wouldn't be surprised if Nihon Falcom started to focus a bit more on pc. Check out this interview. They know their games are selling very well on pc.

No need to get defensive. I was actually referring to developing on multiple platforms.

Need a place to preorder those games in Canada for both PS3 and Vita (please tell me those will have physical releases)

PS3, PS Vita and PS4 are multiple platforms. ;p

Falcom's newer games all run on PhyreEngine. Sony allows that engine to be used for PC releases, so I can see their stuff coming over to PC eventually. PS4 basically being a PC should make it easier to port over Ys 8 and whatever else they release on it.

Wait, Sen 3 is confirmed? Or is it that 2 not have a conclusive ending?

I'm not sure if it is Sen 3 or a new entry, but a sequel is certainly in the works:

Dengeki Playstation Interview said:
“Although the release will be a little further out, we’re currently working on a sequel to Trails of Cold Steel, where the stage is set in the Erebonian Empire,” said Kondo. “However, the story is much more expansive than we imagined, and we’re currently thinking about what to do with its volume.”
Not sure if I can post the source, but if you Google it, you can find it.

Sen I and II were originally 1 game but because the story they wanted to tell was too long for one game, they decided to split it up into 2 games. The upcoming "Sen 3" for lack of better or title would probably be the equivalent to SC for Trails in the Sky, essentially.
