As I said, there lies madness. :D I honestly wouldn't read through all of that even for free. MTMTE and Roberts is some next-level shit, you only read what other peasants have written that is strictly needed to enjoy it.

I think I should write a 3-tier detailing of all that's in the bundle, according if you want to read a) Just MTMTE, b) MTMTE + early RiD + Windblade, c) all of it, with my recommendation being either a) or b) based on personal patience and time. Reading non-Roberts pre-war stuff wouldn't even be in my acknowledged set of choices.

Interesting; I remember enjoying most of the pre-war stuff, but then again when I think back on it I just remember liking specific things, a lot of which is in the Spotlights and/or is interesting character background stuff like with what happened to Kup. I'll keep that in mind and probably just grab the Wreckers plus maybe one or two other specific things I want on the IDW Comixology sale for now. I'll keep an eye out for the other pre-war stuff on maybe some sort of crazy humble or other sale though, if I could get them dirt cheap I absolutely will.

Since I dropped off about halfway through the "Transformers" series that immediately pre-dates is it at all important to catch up on that before starting MTME or RiD, or not really? TBH I don't even remember what was really happening at that point; I remember everything pretty well in terms of the Earth stuff through All Hail Megatron etc, but it gets fuzzy for me after that. The more I think about it the more it sticks out to me that I mostly just remember the character story/spotlights which I guess speaks more to the point made in the thread about the characters and writing being the strength of the series right now.

As someone who read most of the infiltration et-al series I cannot recommend them. I remember All Hail Megatron to be fine though. I think the spotlight series is what shines out of the IDW lineup, outside of MTME.

Also, don't worry if you don't recognize alot of the cast in MTME. Most of them are really c/d tier characters at the beginning who evolve as the series goes on.

So I think on top of the bundle for now I'm going to grab:

-Dark Prelude (which has Spotlights that take place just after MTME starts and was recommended as a get earlier in the thread for that reason)
-Dark Cyberton 1 & 2 collections for the obvious gaps in MTME and RID
-Last Stand of the Wreckers since everyone here loves it, it's at least partially relevant to later stuff (even though it's solidly in the war timeframe), and I remember it being great

For post-war stuff that takes place during the current runs how important/relevant are Drift: Empire of Stone, Sins of the Wreckers and the Punishment one-shot? Also any other earlier stuff that is at all recommended? I feel like I might grab the Spotlight collections just because I remember liking some of those specifically like Kup's but not sure. There's other more recent stuff but it's post what's in the bundle and very recent (ex Till All Are One etc) but I don't want to even consider buying brand new stuff until I've read all of this other stuff.

Yeah, I think I'm also realizing the Spotlight stuff is mostly what I remember/enjoyed from the earlier stuff. All Hail Megatron was fine from what I remember, but the fact that I can't even remember what was happening in the mainline (at that time) series when I stopped is telling. I just remember enjoying all of the character-specific stories mostly, but my perception is also maybe a bit skewed just because I read through the collections and in chunks as opposed to over single issues or a long period of time.

Interesting; I remember enjoying most of the pre-war stuff, but then again when I think back on it I just remember liking specific things, a lot of which is in the Spotlights and/or is interesting character background stuff like with what happened to Kup.

Kup is an honorable exception because it's written by Nick Roche, co-writer for Last Stand of the Wreckers and often scripting partner in crime of Roberts.

Since I dropped off about halfway through the "Transformers" series that immediately pre-dates is it at all important to catch up on that before starting MTME or RiD, or not really?

The end of war served as a rather big reset button for a lot of things, and even what ties there were to the past are glossed over in Death of Optimus Prime. The most relevant stuff is what happens in the final arc of the previous ongoing, Chaos, summarized here. Basically:

- Human / Autobot relationships fall out spectacularly and they leave Earth (who cares about Earth anyway?).
- The Decepticons are lead by Galvatron, himself possessed/manipulated by a bog standard evil entity, D-Void, into Cybertron. A huge number of sweeps (zombie clones of Scourge, also D-Void made) are merged into a huge being that Megatron of all people fights and defeats. In the meantime, Galvatron heads to Cybertron's core, deceived into thinking he'll heal it (hint: D-Void has other plans), but is confronted and stopped by Optimus (though not killed). Optimus disappears...
- And this leads straight into Death of Optimus, where he wakes up two weeks later in a Cybertron that has reset itself; no longer dying, but reverted to a primal state with no cities and volcanoes, etc. Kimia, an Autobot space station, is landed as a makeshift city.

In any case this mostly affects RiD; MTMTE itself makes zero references to all of this.

For post-war stuff that takes place during the current runs how important/relevant are Drift: Empire of Stone, Sins of the Wreckers and the Punishment one-shot?

Drift is at best decent, but more related to MTMTE (though still self-contained); Sins is considerably better and probably requisite read if you liked Last Stand (it's its direct sequel, even though years have passes out and in-continuity), but isn't directly related to MTMTE (or even RiD). I don't have Punishment as John Barber and Silvio Ramondelli are my least favorite writer and artist, so I avoid anything by them if I can (and this one seems not to be connected to anything).

Drift: Empire of Stone isn't really relevant or good at all. Skip. It explains what some characters were doing off panel during MTMTE, but that's not worth suffering through and it will almost certainly never be referenced ever again.
Sins of the Wreckers is a direct sequel to LSOTW, and decent. It's not impacted the other books at this point though. Unsure if it will.
Punishment: Probably nominally relevant to some ongoing RID stories, but not essential.

I'd honestly pick up the original Drift miniseries over Empire of Stone. It's far more relevant to MTMTE, but sadly CMX only have the individual issues and not the trade. It's in the sale though.

Also I'd generally recommend people read issues #22 and #23 of the Transformers on-going that pre-dated RID/MTMTE. It ties into RID.

The only Spotlights I think are relevant are Sixshot, Metroplex, Cyclonus and Shockwave. But they're all nice background rather than essential.

I bought the Transformers comic Humble Bundle last year. How much content do I not have from last year's version to this one? Is it worth spending 8 dollars to buy the bundle to get what wasn't in last year's version?

IIRC that went up to volume 6 and had some individual issues of 7?

So you're pretty much getting two and half volumes of RID/MTMTE, and Combiner Wars, and the two Windblade books.

That feels like a reasonable use of $8 to me tbh.

The $15 tier has the Hasbro-verse comic crossover event thing. Up to you if you want to read it, as I'm lukewarm towards it myself :X
It does feature Rom the Space Knight and
apparently Storm Shadow is gonna take on Prime and co. cuz he suspects them of being bad guys

This sounds both awesome and terrible at the same time.

I'm sure I have some Spiderman/Transformers crossover comic laying around somewhere now I think about it. Or it might've been a more generic Avengers one.
I think Iron Man had a Transformer sized suit of armour.

Or I'm remembering something I dreamed.

I kind of regret it now thinking about it I knew someone who just wouldn't stop bugging me about some character, I guess the twerp autobot guy who doesn't transform. These books don't feature him that much do they?

Wish they offered a zipped download of all the files though rather than having to download them all individually.

One of the first things you'll see
Is a link to the bundle you just bought :V
A few lines downa and you'll see this-
The SUGGESTED reading order
If the mere mention of a good comic book series is enough to pique your interest, follow this simple guide to get into this fun entertaining series.
1- Last Stand of the Wreckers
1b- Spotlight: Kup (This one is optional but was written by Roche and gets a small reference in LSoW. It has great art too)
2- Transfomrers: Chaos Theory TPB (You only need to read the 2-parter story in this book as it was written by Roberts and offers more world building. It also gets referenced later in MTMTE)
3- More than meets the eye Volumes 1-3
4- Transformers: Dark Prelude. This is a collection of one shot stories, but some are written by Roberts and features a plot point that becomes important in a later story. Also shows Megatron putting Starscream in his place so that's always fun.
5- MTMTE Vol. 4-5
6- Dark Cybertron
7- MTMTE Vol. 6-10
8- Sins of the Wreckers
9- Transformers: Titans Return

Read it after Vol. 1 of MTMTE.
If you want you can alternate between MTMTE and RiD volumes, eg-
MTMTE Vol. 1>RiD Vol. 2>MTMTE Vol. 2>RiD Vol. 2
and so on :3

Rodimus is dead

I haven't read RiD but that spoiler tag shouldn't be a big deal at all, the last the other cast sees of MTME's characters is the Lost Light blowing up at the end of the first chapter of the first volume, but obviously there's more comic than that :p

Picked up the 8 dollar bundle. Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I'm very confused though about what is happening. I've never read a transformers comic and honestly didn't know they existed. I'm starting with MTMTE as suggested but I don't know anything. Is there something I can read to catch me up?

Rereading these has been a lot of fun. Some stuff make more sense knowing what happens in the future and you recall still unsolved mysteries, such as
What happens to Pharma after his body was taken inside the portal.

I choose to blame the OP of this thread for my just spending £150 on a 2 foot tall SDCC exclusive Titans Return Fortress Maximus.

Did you know there's a new third party Scorponok that's of similar size?

It can be yours for the low price of $397.99!
shipping not included.

^ Overdesigned mess, like most third party figures.

I really like MTMTE but RID isn't bad either, mainly because I like where they're taking characters like Prowl.

Overall the IDW universe is great, even if they messed up continuity a LOT early on. Even still, having a connected story from the very first is unique for Transformers.

The only problem is inconsistent art. You'll have someone like Roche or Guidi, and then suddenly a whole issue of crap like Ramondelli's, or whoever made the shockingly poor Galvatron issues (Chaos?). I understand that a single artist can't keep up with all these stories, but yeesh. Spotlight Bumblebee was also very weak.

Yeah, it's hard to deny that they went overboard with the details. Scorpion mode especially is a god damn mess. Still, I have to appreciate how much work they put into it and I like that city mode.
And while third party stuff isn't for everyone, there's plenty of solid toys available. Really excited for that Overlord. Doubt I'd be half as excited for it if it weren't for LSOTW and MTMTE.

Tizoc is one of my favorite posters because he shares my love of fighting games, wrasslin', and now I realize Transformers too. I've only dabbled in Transformers, having watched the entirety of Armada (awesome) and Beast Machines (Meh) as a kid and playing the High Moon games on PS3, both of which I loved. I own Devastation on PS4 but don't have the time to play it.

Reading comics, though, I can do. Gonna give that bundle a try

Did you watch Beast Wars as well? Or just Beast Machines? Because Wars is vastly superior and is essentially a sequel to the original cartoon, with some inspiration from the comics sprinkled in. Beast Machines however ended up as an abomination.

I have Mastermind Creation's version of Six-Shot, he's freaking incredible!

So I'm through issue 35 of MTMTE and this comic is ridiculously good. Some of the stuff they decide to introduce into the story like time travel and have it not suck like usual is really blowing me away. I guess my biggest complaint is the overall lack of 'Cons throughout the story. The DJD are showing up a bit more frequently now but I'd still like some more focus on them.

So... I guess enough people have asked that I thought it was worth doing a quick recap of IDW's Transformers continuity up to MTMTE.

This is by no means the complete story, but it's just intended to get you up to speed if you feel a little lost.

It does include some spoilers for Infiltration and Devastation in the bundle. So read at your own risk or read them first.
Okay - so the Transformers. Much like the original cartoon, the Autobots and Decepticons have been at war for millions of years. However, in IDW continuity there was never a crash landing on Earth with the main cast stuck under a volcano for millions of years. There was simply a huge war. A war that went on for a very long time, and spread by proxy across many worlds in a desperate quest for resources in order to win. Such was the devastation that Cybertron itself was rendered largely inhospitable.

Eventually, one of those worlds targeted by the conflict was Earth, with both the Autobots and Decepticons arriving. There they discovered Ore-13, a type of Energon, essential for Cybertronian life (the Ore-13 on Earth had been created by Shockwave in a weird experiment shortly before he disappeared - both Shockwave and the Dinobots were buried on Earth following a battle for millenia).

The discovery of Ore-13 lead to an escalation in the conflict. A traitor in the Autobot ranks lead to a pretty grim time for them, and the Decepticons laid waste to chunks of the planet. However, in time the Autobots were able to fight back, and eventually incapacitated Megatron. Starscream, taking command, took the Decepticon forces and fled to a distant asteroid.

Around the same time the Transformers also faced a new threat - or at least a very old one. Nova Prime, one of Optimus' predecessors long thought lost on a voyage of discovery with some of his most powerful warriors (including Galvatron, Cyclonus and Scourge, who are separate characters in this continuity) attacked having being trapped in a dead universe which had essentially enslaved them. This was defeated.

Humanity rebuilt it's capitals, and for obvious reasons became non too keen on the transformers, but Prime and many other Autobots remained undercover, working in secret with the Earth's governments to track down a few Decepticon stragglers. Meanwhile Starscream blew his leadership - the Decepticons were rudderless and fell to petty infighting, becoming a shell of their former self. Eventually Shockwave and Soundwave, in desperation, rebuilt Megatron into a new, sexy body, and he returned. This included leaving Hot Rod for dead, with a huge hole in him filled only by the Matrix of Leadership...

While Nova Prime had been defeated, Galvatron, Cyclonus and Scourge survived. They built an army in an attempt to defeat an evil dead universe entity called D-Void, which was the enemy of all life, and headed for Cybertron. Upon hearing this and assuming bad intentions, the Autobots left Earth, heading to confront him. Megatron also surrendered to Prime and travelled with them.

Turns out distrusting Galvatron was a good idea, as he was being an idiot, and manipulated by D-Void rather than battling him. What he thought would stop D-Void - feeding an artifact into Cybertron's core, in fact would have brought it into our universe. Galvatron also managed to force all the remaining Decepticons and his army, possessed by D-Void's influence, to combine together into one gigantic scary robot. Megatron stayed to fight this giant beast while Prime and Rodimus went after Galvatron, but Prime was too late. Cyclonus realised they were being deceived and joined Prime. In desperation, Optimus sacrificed the Matrix of Leadership in order to block D-Void, but after the dust settled the core of Cybertron was gone, leaving behind just the empty Matrix. Megatron was nowhere to be found. The Decepticons, weakened after their giant robot combiner excursion, were easily rounded up by the remaining Autobots.

And so we get to RiD and MTMTE. The war is over. What happens next?

Thanks for the recap, Mindwipe.

Comixology Unlimited does offer LSotW, but I had to buy the other comics (which are often cheaper on Kindle store than Comixology). So I'm finally about to start the Humble Bundle MTMTE/RID run (after being distracted by all the other non-TF comics on Unlimited).

As a fan of the 80s television show, I really hate that Galvatron is an entirely separate character from Megatron in the IDW comics. I can accept the rest of the changes, but that one just grates upon me, even though earlier non-IDW comics did the same. I hope Galvatron doesn't return in MTMTE/RID, but I expect to be disappointed in that regard. :(

Prowl is a dick

Other than having to be in charge of the Autobots black ops and other shady aspects I'm not sure how he's a dick for having to exactly do the dirty work. I know the writers want him to be made out to be one but even Optimus fought the war tossing soldiers at the Deceptions knowing so many would die just so they could counter and win at places. This was pretty much pointed out when both Megs and Op were locked up in giant metallic balls that basically allowed them to control everything happening during the war and broke down their troops into numbers and decimals essentially.

Basically you don't win a several million year war by being a boy scout or by playing nice. Prowl unfortunately gets the short end of the stick because he's not Optimus in that in the eyes of the Autobots. The NAIL's however view Optimus as no different.
