Troika on Fallout3: 'We got screwed'

How did you feel when you knew that you lost the race for the Fallout license ?

Like someone kicked me in the nuts and then kidnapped one of my daughters. Okay, maybe that’s a bit too harsh, but I was upset. As I said in a previous interview (on DAC), we always felt like Fallout was ours, and it was just a technicality that Interplay owned it. I always thought we’d end up working on it again, and when the opportunity seemed to present itself again, I got overexcited and figured the universe was realigning itself to deliver Fallout back to us. Sadly for us, it looks like we won’t be getting the opportunity to further the Fallout universe in line with our original vision.

Wow, sounds like those guys at Troika are kind of bitter over the fact that Bethesda got the Fallout license. But I think they've got the right, seeing as how it was "their" game.

Oh, another screenshot from the new engine:

Pretty sweet. I've always hated generic American medieval fantasy settings, so this seems like a breath of fresh air.

I have a bad feeling there will be some post apocalyptic burn out soon. Troika has theirs, Bethesda is doing one, there are at least three post apocalyptic MMORPGs in the works and one is being done by a very big MMO name.

Yeah, but it looks just like the other two damn Fallouts, just 3d.

Sounds good to me.

The next thing after the upcoming post apocalypic rush will be Ancient Rome, but on a smaller scale. There is also an unannounced ancient rome style MMORPG in the works.

I'm rather excited to see how Troika does on their next RPG. The Temple of Elemental Evil had some problems, but the battle system absolutely rocked. Near PERFECT implementation of command menus, and other RPG makers would do well to investigate why. With a better and more interesting quest system along with some other do-able tweaks, these guys have the potential to put out something great. Just missing a couple of things on the last try.

Vampire Bloodlines is going to be awesome :)

This is a good thing.

I just mean, I don't get the "refreshing" bit considering there are more than enough games sporting this scenario. Plus, Fallout 2 gave me my fill of this stuff for a long time =P

Is Troika a Russian based group? 'Cause Troika is a Russian word for "threesome" (not in the sexual context).

^^ A very little amount of research reveals they're in Irvine, CA. ^^

Q: Where did the name Troika Games come from?
A: Its original meaning came into being back when Tim, Leonard and Jason were working on Fallout at Interplay. Their boss dubbed them “The Troika”, and as they continue to work together to make great games, it seemed rather fitting to keep the name. As Troika strives to create innovative, quality games, it has taken on the additional meaning of Code, Art and Design, the three things Troika considers key to a great game.

Post-apocalyptic is always awesome.

I don't think Bethesda can do anything with the Fallout license. I hope they prove me wrong, but I sincerely believe they lack the ability create a good Fallout game the way Troika can. Looking at their past games and other current projects, it just isn't in them.

so was this troika game going to be named fallout 3 (assuming they won the rights?)

if it was just change the name, but get the same artwork GUI man (I love that little dude)

Nope. SOE is working on a modern combat MMP.

Nope. SOE is working on multiple unannounced projects.

The modern combat game is just one of them. They have a couple other traditional MMORPGs in the works, although a some may be canned (the second EQOA expansion, the Underfoot, was already).

There's the modern combat game. Think Battlefield: Modern Combat with worse graphics and a monthly fee. Then there's an ancient roman style game, and the post apocalyptic MMO that's being worked on in Austin.

SOE only has their San Diego and Austin studios now. The studio that was doing PlanetSide/Soverign was shut down and the PlanetSide developers were moved to San Diego to finish up some PS patches and work on the Modern Combat game.

Good... Trokia sucks... I loved Fallout, but I've hated Arcanum and had no interest in playing Lionheart because Arcanum sucked so much ass.

aside from the gfx comment and more future style didnt we learn this really doesnt work IE: Planetside as a monthly pay to play game? (hell I think old HL1 mods had plugins that could track "your xp", and with large mmo style esque fps games (BF, etc) I dont think this style will work (unless the FPS is just the combat engine ala neocron)

no shit I would love to play wasteland but the damn thing runs at like

500000000000000 fps on my pc and I cant control the guy (he rips across the screen like his ass is on fire),

I cant believe the homebrew community never remade it.... :(

Post-apocalyptic = An excuse for developers to make everything red-brown. At least it's nice that some Western developers try to find excuses. :P

Seriously, nice to see something other than your generic Western fantasy settings, which I grew tired of some time ago.
