I really enjoyed the episode. Loved the new theme song, Farrell is unhinged, Vaughn seemed like a duck on a pond(cool above and paddling like mad below), McAdams was good.

Seems like a mob deal that went south, but I'm sure it's more than that. I'm in.

Will give it another couple of weeks, I guess. My wife traded “what did they say?” and “what just happened?” way to often than one should during a TV show. It did start to come together a little bit at the end. The motorcycle in the dark thing, where he’s going 100 mph with no headlights then stops like he was going 10 mph made me laugh.

What was the whole sex exchange thing about when they introduced McAdams character? Is she just an angry fuck?

Part of me kept waiting for Cole Phelps to popup and start interrogating people.

Yes! Taylor Kitsch kinda gave off that vibe

Intrigued enough to keep watching. Unexpectedly kept wanting to see more of McAdams character development. Dem knives.

But wow there was some cringeworthy writing. The "don't act hungry even when eating" line literally made me burst out laughing.

Was it ever confirmed if there'd be any types of occult type misdeeds this season because caspers death could be read into like that. Left there overlooking something ? Eyes taken wearing shades waitng for dawn? Probably reading to much into it.

The episode felt like total self-parody. It was so fucking over the top and unbeliavable and every character is so ridiculously damaged it was funny. Luckily for the show it was entertainingly over the top goofy though, and not boring over the top. Will continue to watch for Colin Ferrel threatening 12 year olds.

Not that I want to defend this show but lets not forget it is a neo noir style tv show. This style seems to be much heavier into that style compared to the first season as well.

I don't know if it was just poor directing but I really thought Colin was going to beat the shit out of the kid when he put on the knuckles. Definitely a "whoa, too far" moment for me for an instant there.

Yeah, I totally get what they were talking about- the lines are being oversold when some of them really need to be flippant.

I liked how the step-dad started to complain when Ray was questioning the kid but got dead quiet when Ray really let loose with "fat pussy". He got showed up like the beta he is.

Just realized that the premiere really reminded me of Low Winter Sun...ugh.

Still way too early to judge anything but yeah, not a strong opening.

EDIT: The show (and maybe some of us here) seems to have forgotten that TD S1 treated Rust as an almost comical "weirdo" for the first 2-3 episodes. They had the foresight to really hammer home Marty's "you're a weirdo" perspective, which mitigated the "GPhil 101"-ness of some of it, then slowly subverts that by drawing us into Rust's psyche and his character.

Here, they just want us to jump onboard straight from the get-go. Still can't get over David Morse's character. He seriously looks like he could belong in a Zucker Bros. parody of the genre.

I really hope they are trolling us with the first three episodes. I will reserve judgement until episode 4 is out. Wasn't ep. 4 when Reggie LeDoux was introduced in season 1? That's when shit got interesting.

What Ray did was a far more effective scare tactic. Seeing your dad get the everlasting shit smacked out of him because of you, would leave a bigger emotional scar than just getting your own ass bloody.

Another big misstep: pairing Taylor Kitsch with literally one of the hottest and seemingly sweetest girlfriends, and making him look bored.

How am I supposed to connect with you when you can't appreciate this temple of beauty?

Not sure how that'd make it poor directing

Is this sarcastic? Thats literally the whole point of the scene.

I'm not going to hate on the show just yet, but the first episode didn't do much for me and it was awfully hard to follow. I also am disappointed in this seasons theme song.

Oh, no, I get it--the long take of his meh face during the blowjob told me EVERYTHING I need to know about it. And if that wasn't enough to tell us he's unsatisfied, he's speeding dangerously on his bike at night. The show made sure we all "got" it.

I don't know what you guys watch, but I liked it. Velcoro and Bezzerides are the more interesting (and better acted) characters so far, and I'm particularly interested in seeing more of the latter.

I'm not a fan of the opening theme (just not my thing) but the rest of the soundtrack and the score were great. Maybe I'm easy but I thought the thumping percussion provided great gobs of atmosphere. And hey, The Tunnel isn't coming back until next year and I've already run through that season two or three times.

Oh I havent forgotten that. But there are ways to do it without be incredibly incredibly silly. Chinatown for example.

I actually was really intrigued and found the premiere to be very solid. I really dislike watching characters do drugs and drink themselves silly though.. it's so unsettling. That's not a knock on it, it just makes me really sad.

Not poor directing. He's off the rails, completely unhinged -- you as a viewer and the kid himself are supposed to believe that he might be crazy enough to do that. What he did, completely emasculating his father in front of him, was probably more effective though.

Is this sarcastic? Thats literally the whole point of the scene.

Definitely. He clearly doesn't "feel" any more at this point which is why he wanted to kill himself and why he needed the viagra.

Wasn't a fan of the opening credits but I don't care for Tom Waits at all so no real surprise. Ideally it'd be sort of abridged in future episodes but I assume it won't be.

That wasn't Tom Waits, it was Leonard Cohen.

Tom's Way Down in the Hole was used for The Wire, but his original was only used one season oddly, the rest were covers.

You did catch that he's suicidal, right?

I'm torn on the intro.

I enjoyed the actual lyrics and instrumentals, but not the vocals. Just seemed out of place. I'm out of sync with what's popular, but I wasn't feeling that combination at all.

There was some nice cinematography in this episode. Asides from the last shot, can anyone post some shots from it?

That woman /Barbie doll in the milk bowl was trippy af.

Obviously can't post the gif, but I still can't tell if it's a Barbie doll or some cgi at play.

The longer I stare at it, the less it makes sense lol.

Also, I don't think Pizzaman understands why people liked Rusty and his partnership with Marty. Everyone in that intro seemed like Rusty, spouting a bunch of pretentious philosophical lines trying to sound deep. That is not why people liked Rusty, people liked him because he was a stereotypical noir detective spouting a bunch of philosophical bullshit which worked when paired against his straight man, Marty, who would routinely call him out on his nonsense. We've all heard the hard-boiled tragic detective go off on a rant about how society is doomed, civilization was a mistake, and everything is meaningless in a "woe is me" fashion, rarely do we get to see someone like their partner tell them to shut the hell up and just stop saying stuff.

I still don't entirely understand his blank expression here and the closing of the eyes.

Dude has some serious trauma and it appears he dislikes sex because it's a trigger for him. He also has some serious (acid/chemical??) burns that hint at him being badly abused when he was younger.

Well after it was revealed that he's a military vet and had scars from before his service it just seems like a cocktail for craziness (trauma + PTSD). It's also clear that he's suicidal (crazy bike ride with his headlight off), so that made the emotionless blowjob make more sense to me.

He just seems dead inside and numb to everything.

Using motorcycles as a way to get an adrenaline rush for military guys is a real thing- they have terrible accident/fatality rates on them.

Going to wait until episode 3 or 4 and then watch it. Netflix has spoiled me. Sometimes the waiting is good, but in this case, with this episode waiting a week to know if things are going to be better is a drag.

I liked the bike scenes with Kitsch at night. Was actually on edge when he turned the lights off. Only nitpick was that he seemed to stop really easily when he turned the lights back on, but I've never ridden a bike so what do I know.

lol yeah, I don't think it would go that smoothly if you slammed the breaks while going 100mph on a bike. His wind tunnel face was also funny.

Yeah, we make fun, but I actually thought that scene was done really well.

it didn't get interesting until the last 5 or 10 minutes for me. i understand they were setting up all of the characters, but it just felt slow. also, the pacing was kind of off with the way things jumped around. i'm still on board and am interested to see what i think of it after another episode or two.
