True Detective - Season 2 - We get the Season we deserve - Sundays on HBO

Don't know about shows, but it was a tired cliche even in American Beauty.

Having said that, cliches can be starting points for interesting characters. I just don't know if Pizza can pull it off. Sometimes I feel like his approach to character conflict is a little...undercooked? I don't know what it is.

Right? I often forget what's going on with his character, because his segments are forgettable. "Realizing all the money's gone" scenes can be fucking amaaaaazing, too.
It seems neither of you know what cliche actually means.

One thing...

McAdams drove up to the precinct, it rack focused from the emblem on the building to the car they were in...they talked briefly, and then he got out and walked to his front door. I was like...what the fuck, when did they drive to his house???

I caught that too, so he does live next to the police station?

Season 1 took a bit to get going, people look through it w/ rose colored glasses but the first 2-3 episodes were pretty slow and there were a good amount of people not fully invested in the show until the midway point.

I'm liking this season so far, VV kind of sucks and i'm indifferent on the friday night lights cop but definitely like Colin Farrel and McAdams. People should give this a few more episodes before declaring it a dead season.

I dunno if someone else already suggested this but my theory:

Taylor Kitsch is the killer. Split personality or something. Too coincidental to randomly have a psych out moment ("stop it") and then stumble across Caspere's body.

Also nearly every time we see him he's packing his bag (full of bird masks?) and heading somewhere.

As someone else pointed out, he's probably gay. He's former military spec ops and with his gnarled shoulder has probably been tortured--and tortured others. The whole sexual violence angle for this series continues.

Also
for those who played Heavy Rain, doesn't this feel like it? Four main characters involved in a murder mystery, one of whom is the killer?

Just a guess anyway. Feel free to poke holes in the theory.

Think the car scene with Ani en Velcore was the best one yet. You know when they talk about "world we deserve" and knifes. For the first time i really felt the connection between two characters in this season.

That scene where Antigone is looking at porn and drinking whiskey comes across absolutely ridiculous. A lot of the show is right now. I have to admit, it fits how ridiculous seedy pulp novels probably have gotten over the years, though.

Huh. That would be....huh. I could see it.

Vince Vaugh's driver gives me the creeps. On IMDB,
he's listed as "Nails" and being in all 8 episodes. The actor's bio says the character got his name from surviving a brutal nail gun attack.

I'm almost afriad to go back and rewatch the first season now. I feel like it will make this season seem even more bad. I'm enjoying this season but it just doesn't seem good.

So Mc Adams's character probably felt like she was in heaven in Casper's house with all those....... toys, better EP this week but could do with less vv trying to hard to be reflective introspective and deep. He just doesn't sell it as well as Rust could.

Cliche is used when something is overused, and this plot point is the complete opposite of it. I can only recall 1 or 2 times ever seeing this on TV in the last decade or so. Tropes as a term has completely lost meaning nowadays as it's pretty much used for anything, including rare repetitive story elements or plot points with you being a good example of it.

TV tropes listing a few examples of out hundreds of millions of storylines means nothing. At this point, everything is a trope and the word itself is redundant and worthless.

He was still on patrol while birdman was driving Caspere's corpse around though. Unless there's possibly two people involved?

You guys spoiler tag the most random stuff. Anyway I don't see Taylor's character being the killer. I don't get the feel that that's the type of mystery they're trying to create here where one of the cops is the killer. It would be fun(ny) though.

Episode was definitely better than the first. Ray had some humorous lines that lightened the mood a little. Still hampered by some bad exposition, but I was engaged throughout. I don't think I'm as down on Vince as some of you, but he is probably the weak link. Loved how sleazy the police chief was.

Tonally, they got most of it right this episode. Last week’s episode was a total mess, but they finally got a good rhythm going now. Hopefully it stays that way.

Maybe that's the problem. He has only looked like a wet fart through both episodes so far, so it felt like nothing's out of the ordinary.

Isn't that sort of what his character is "about" though? He's a self made man who has gone through ups and downs, had his life in crime, and now had a big shot at going "legit" but it's just another step in the game plan for him. He doesn't want to appear desperate because it would make him seem vulnerable and not in control. I don't think he has reached a "oh fuck everything is totally scewed the money is really ALL gone now!" moment yet. He still believes he can fix it.

When he tells his subordinate in episode one not to look hungry and to never do anything out of hunger, not even eating, I assumed that was exactly what he was talking about. Having said that, I don't think Vaughn is really pulling his weight among the cast, but he's not being out of character or anything.

Agreed. I think the character as written so far makes sense. Dude is just trying to maintain his cleaned up image while the world around him starts to crumble. The business and his home are double mortgaged. Crooked city officials seem to want him out. We're just now starting to see the cracks.

I think 4 main leads is proving hard to pull off. Episode 2 shined when it was just Ray and Ani shooting the shit, just like the best parts of season 1 with Rust and Marty.

The porn scene was weird. Like I'm sure in some capacity she was aroused, but she also seemed cold and distant in the moment. Almost clinical. It's like she was simultaneously engaging with and trying to suppress her interest.

I guess, but even if that's what his character is "about", it doesn't make it any more compelling (to me, of course). There's something missing and I have trouble decided whether it's the actor, the writing, or just a complete mismatch. I generally don't mind, if not like, Vince Vaughn, but nothing he's done here has worked for me.

The fuck?

Anyway, I can't believe people think Ray could still be alive after that point-blank second shot-gun to the torso.

rock-salt is always a possibility, but i don't get why the shooter would do that. unless he was told specifically to only scare Ray...but i dunno if i'm with that.

he SHOULD be dead but i don't want him to be. he's carrying this show for me at the moment.

man keep that shit out of here. assuming we remember every frame of a whole season's trailer. smh.

edit: cool, it was edited.

@post below that guy looked like a damn shark

No blood=he's alive.

Sheeeeeeeeit, even when there's a ton of blood and horrible wounds (S1 finale), people still live.

Plus, a shotgun slug could penetrate a vest, but buckshot is less likely. Also, if he wanted to kill him, why not shoot him in the head from that distance?

My imagination must have been pulling the weight, I thought you could see his innards.

Narp. They're actually pretty careful to not show the wound from the first shot. You can see the second shot to the abdomen pretty clearly and there's no blood, just the impact to the body/shirt.

Ani was watching her sister get banged on webcam or some random girl? The exploration of her sexuality is one of the most interesting aspects of the show and looking forward to it.

Wow, that intro monologue was bad, like an SNL making a parody of some Almodovar film or some shit, the wife character which I liked last week indulges in that rubbish too. Lucky they got that out of the way since the rest of the episode was good, Bike gay cop is used just little enough, his backstory will lead to some generic fuckery but it will have no impact since everyone is so miserable in this thing, Ani, Ray and Justin Lin are saving this show.

Nice Cumberbach cameo tho.

One thing is for sure,
Valcoro isn't dead. We see neither blood nor a wound. It was no coincidence that the guy was there, he has been waiting for him. This guy is absolutely insane.
The first two episodes were great so far and I can't wait for the next one.

Well, the episode was pretty good. Actually I find it more watchable than early episodes of season 1 that were all talk and walk. What I don't like is all the porn porn porn theme so far. too much. All the RM scenes were either graphic or had baaad jokes like the ecig scene....

yeah, he will be ok, no reason not to show blood otherwise.

Good job, B33. You removed a pic, but responded with something that spoils regardless of your tags. That's some Daniel Plainview spoiling method right there.

Fuck man, Taylor Kitsch can really act. Why the fuck has he been in dumb shit until now?

I really despise Ray Velcoro.

Yeah, he's pretty fantastic.

Lol this guy, such a slimeball. But I like him a lot haha.

Great great episode with a pretty insane ending.

There's a shot I remember seeing that was Velcoro and McAdams' character with bullet proof vests on and I'm sure we haven't seen that scene yet so he's unlikely to be dead.

I didn't catch that her sister was in the site, but it's possible, given episode 1.

I'm curious about her sexuality (or whatever that character point is) but also really terrified. This is the "wait until Kojima explains Quiet!" of True Detective S2 for me.

Nice Cumberbach cameo tho.

lol

Not sure how I feel after watching ep 2. I'll still finish out the season.

And yeah, that wasn't really Cumberbatch as the Doc was it? I joked with a friend that that was him as soon as I saw the guy.

Yeah, im preparing myself for the worst when it comes to Ani, the commune is gonna be a source of generic angst but im counting on the writer not pulling the Incest/Rape card, I hope the knife thing begins and ends with the reasons she stated, at this point it works as a good commentary of police women and at the same time of the her shielded nature, no tragic reason is needed. I hope the Bike Gay Cop's secret program involves some Super Soldier serum, but its gonna be some Abu Ghraib stuff.
