Aww man he was WAY more conciliatory than I thought he'd be :(

Basically saying it's up to McConnell, which in the end it is.

I prefer your way. You know he's thinking it. Though honestly, they know the Democrats are deflated here so what's even the point is my guess.

I know you say that, through some magic the "they" I referred to mostly all say that. Since the election there seems to be a new norm even on Gaf. But nearly every time you talk politics it's mildly cozy with a white nationalist candidate. The fact that you're clearly a smart guy makes it worse.

If you're not a Trumper then what makes you a rightist?

If you're opposed to what I consider universal rights, like health care for the poor, or a social safety net just say it and we can speak honestly about why it benefits everybody to provide those services and fully fund them. The constitution doesn't say I'm right, so there's room to take it as an originalist and go libertarian.

If you're afraid of a ban PM me.

I'll add that every single time I make a post like this I get either no response or a single sentence blow off.
i blow you off because I try to stick to the topic of the thread
I've posted many times that I consider myself independent

I lean fiscally conservative but socially liberal
My biggest gripe with the GOP is how hypocritical they are when it comes to "small government" when it fact they are not on social issues

I also am a proponent of Medicaid - never said it should be taken away

Dems should call their bluff.

It's not a bluff, they're drunk with power and assume they'll keep it. And knowing their tactics keeping people away from the ballot box they just might.

The fact that the left lost the states so profoundly is the biggest fuck-up of the last 8 years. Complacency happens, but it allows this kind of takeover to happen. The right was masterful in taking advantage of it.

They organized day in and day out for years. It's admirable for its consistency. Fuck, I know I thought this was impossible even in 2013. But once you dig into the laws being passed at the state level it's been happening since 2010 at the latest.

Just because the people you seen on the news are rubes doesn't mean the leadership is.

I'm not saying they won't do it. I'm saying they will get major backlash if they touch those things.

at best it will take a while; after all actually overturning roe vs wade will take creating a lawsuit and seeing it through the court system and that could be a few years. it could easily take until 2018 if not 2020

Yes worth it. This was supposed to be Obama's nominee. Fuck anyone else. Obstruct everything.

Explain to me what you think the drawback of that is and I'll point you to republicans who control government at every level and stopped anything from getting done and even stole this very SCOTUS pick by simply not acknowledging that Obama picked him. Republicans obstructed every single thing for any reason or no reason at all and were richly, richly rewarded for it.

Democrats can't act like or believe they're smart if they can observe what happened and not learn from it.
Honestly, they should've been way more obnoxious about this Muslim.

Hold up I'm still pissed about that. Yeah, Dems need to protest everything. Repubs didn't respect the last administration, they shit on the democractic process. Repubs aren't going to play fair with all the cards in their deck right now. Dems need to represent their base and protest. They need to represent our hype and anger in Congress.

I don't think they will try and undo it because like you said, it's almost impossible, so it won't be a short term goal. But, they can absolutely find ways to make the lives of women that consider it more miserable. One of the first things Trump did in office was planned parenthood related.

With both Pence and Bannon on Trump's shoulder, people should be expecting the worse when it comes to a woman's right to choose, because these men don't believe a woman has that right, nor do they respect many laws, but especially not laws favored by liberals.

I actually wasn't referring to you specifically when I talked about being blown off. Re-reading the way I wrote it it was muddled. My apologies on that unintended accusation.

Back on topic:
The nominee is fiscally conservative, like you. That sounds great on paper, but it seems relatively indefensible in the context of the US.

The result almost always seems like a transfer of wealth upward. That's deeply concerning to me, though many fiscal conservatives consider that an act of nature in a free system. This nominee seems to hold that view. I just can't come up with a way where that doesn't hurt millions of people.

His record and interactions suggest he's a slightly softer, and less jovial but more welcoming than Scalia. He's also a bit more progressive because he's younger. But a younger Scalia is hard to defend. That man caused a huge amount of harm for to countless millions of people with the the bogus rationale of original intent. Replacing him with a similar man seems equally hard to defend.

Only Trump would be this impulsive and short-sighted. When the balance shifts this will remove one of their options. The Democrats stupidly did this on other procedures and are paying for it now.

We need leadership that is savvy and can align american interests among the split bases

We could actually use a REAL expert negotiator on the side of reason

Democrats will capitulate because they will always capitulate. A fundamental belief of the Democratic party is that government needs to function. They will make a big fuss but ultimately capitulate, because that is what they do, every time.

And honestly, in this case, what can they do? Holding up a SCOTUS nominee for 4 years is unacceptable. Holding one up for a year is also unacceptable, but Republicans can get away with it because their base doesn't care, and the average voter doesn't care either.

This, more than anything, makes me mad at both parties. Mad at congress for not doing their job last year. Mad at Democrats and Obama for not doing everything they could to get the nominee through. The hubris of waiting because they were confident that Clinton would win the presidency. And of course, especially mad at Republicans for obstructing and being rewarded for it. Seethes, which is a word that I've seen tossed around a lot about this nomination is exactly how I feel. I'm angry about the situation but practically there is nothing that can be done about it.

You forgot voter apathy as a factor of why you will lose.

That's the reason I used 20 years. Democrats are lazy as fuck like you say. But at some point even that is overcome by sheer numbers. That's why voter ID and other suppression tactics and the supreme court are so important to the right. Keep the people they don't want to vote from voting, and make sure it'll pass legal rigor.

The left needs to never forget what they're trying to do. They aren't people who just disagree with your opinion like the sockpuppets say. The real swing voters don't login and create an account to proclaim their indifference.

Which is one reason it's important to try and ferret out the people who are moderating their views for Gaf and actually were proud to vote white nationalist, as opposed to people who genuinely bought into the fervor and populism. He was really compelling to many people who mistakenly blamed Obama for the lack of progress in Washington. That misperception falls on the democrats.

Do it. Damage is already being done and the pendulum WILL shift. The Republicans can get fucked then.

Nothing unites Democrats asses better than an existential threat like Trump.

This would nuke the option for Repiblicans, they should do it because they want the government to function. It's for the best.

Water over a stone. Time will wear them down. If you run on white nationalism-lite you have an expiration date.

But you're fucking right it's way further off than I'd have ever guessed. I figure if I live to 70 I might see us be a society that actually has justice for all.

Or the roaches will start some kind of new society.

May as well get this over with, then before polls for 2018 come in and make the GOP think twice about getting rid of the filibuster. Let them own their shittiness, they're going to eventually.

Good. That would literally kill Yertle the Turtle, a hard-line fan of the filibuster whose use of it made me fucking sick. I would love to see him have to nuke it away. And it would just radicalize the left even further and be inspirational to see our representatives actually fight back.
