Turns Out PS5 Leak Showing Available SSD Storage Was Real

Not to nitpick but given how ps5 seems to explain they have to have parity between the 16 channels and memory modules to achieve those speeds I'm thinking that is at least going to be 825GB in base 2 on ps5 vs 1TB in Base 10 on xbox

Meaning 825 real gigs vs 931 real gigs

I guess it kinda also depends on how the OS handles it cuz I know stuff like Windows based OS also calculates in Base 10

The drive space itself is not the issue....it's the lack of communication on actual ways to upgrade your storage and how external drives work that's the problem

Are we able to upgrade the internal slot on day 1 with a m2 drive?

what drives are compatible?

can we copy ps5 games to internal and out when not in use?
They said to wait for testing and correct speeds

Any m.2 gen 4 with 5gbps

They already confirmed you can store your games on an external hdd, you will need to move them to the internal to play them.

This was all announced months ago. People need to chill on the fud for both systems. Its getting out of hand. Take some time to research and just be excited we have some next gen stuff coming!

Next there'll be a topic with the news "Sony count Gb as 1000 Mb, not 1024. They are liars !"

People, 2 years ago nobody believed that Sony and MS could use SSD in new consoles. It looked impossible. Yet they both did it and kudos to both of them for this - it's a real move forward. In 2-3 years the prices for SSD will go down and everything will be fine.

And for people who wanted big HDD in their consoles - there are products for you - PS4 and XBOX One. With many games coming in both generations it's ok to wait for these 2 years.

Sony and MS mad a step forward, yet they had to be careful with prices. This is the solution. And it's a GOOD one, cause others are worse.

Another point to bring up for both consoles that y'all might consider is that space is the default with the feature for allocating capture space. Idk maybe it's saving 15m of 4k video ready space and if you disable it or lower it to something like 5m you'll save a little space thing too.

Er sorry meant 12 channels and its been a long day.

If 2 years ago you doubted they wouldn't use SSDs, than you would be an idiot. The HDD is ancient tech and should be a crime against humanity if you still have one.

you could stick to an external SSD just for the purpose of storage. PS4 games don't need to be installed on the main SSD either.
I prefer internal storage so I don't have to use up a HDMI slot and then the look of having a external storage on my entertainment center.

I might use a HDD storage in the short term. But with my fast internet speeds, I should get away with deleting and redownloading games in the short term.

And now it's crime that it's so small.
And if they put bigger storage, it would've been crime that the consoles are so expensive.

One just can't make people happy - they'll find something to complain.

I think Sony and MS made the right kind of compromise - right type of storage that could be expanded later.

And they also knew despite of their marketing pitch, that for the first 2 years there won't be enough games to fill the storage for 90% of the players. And from the rest 10% half is able to pay for extra storage right away. And the rest 5% will be unhappy and pour their anger to the forums. And that is ok.

So many people trying to put a 'who cares' gloss on this.:messenger_smirking:

600GB of usable storage space is a shit state of affairs, and you know it.

Ouch. For SP-only titles that's not an issue, they take just 50-70GB, even less if we're talking about AA/indie games, but GaaS/MP-oriented titles will greatly suffer no doubts.

In this case, bigger is better. The need to choose a game to delete when it reach the cap incovenience me in PS4. And I have to experience it again in the next gen...

Just get a proper external SSD for both systems. Doesn't need to be the fastest, it's only to transfer and store games temporary

Pretty dire with all these 100 GB games. And only marginal more space as the Series S, which was called out for its space on this forum.

Yikes......unnecessary read/writes against a SSD.
You can get a HDD, but in case of XSX it will take 2min30sec I think for a normal sized game. Maybe people think that is taking too long, but HDD might make more sense

Considering that this is $230 USD, I'd say the PS5 SSD is a pretty good deal.

Transferring games occasionally back and forth is negligible in the grand total lifetime of the SSD. You can do 150GB worth of writes a day every day for years before wearing out a comparable PC NVME SSD.

Good thing I canceled my preorders. Sony really fucked it up with their lack of communication and their anticonsumer moves. Microsoft has been a lot more consumer friendly, but who cares if they don't have any games.
Could you please tell me from which website you canceled your preordere? Maybe i can take it if I'm lucky.

I don't think I've ever had more than ten games installed on a console at once, so this isn't really something I'm that bothered about. It is a pretty small amount of base storage, but even if I decide I want loads of games installed in the future, the third party SSD prices will drop fast. Not an issue.

But think of the money you'll save on corrective lenses since you won't need to squint to read text.

It is 825 gb. Not 1000. It was revealed in March. It is also unparalleled by any drive on the market right now, and, in the near future. It has to be this size to fit in with the architecture and to keep costs down. It's an incredible value to be getting this drive with 650 usable GBs in a $400 or $500 console.
Thanks Sony!

Are you sure? Holy shit this is bad.

This much of space is ok. But those claiming that Sony games will have better 8K detailed textures will be very disappointed.

I agree with you, but Sony has not confirmed you can swap PS5 games from external disk. They only confirmed PS4 games in external disk.
That is true, however with them allowing you to have PS4 games running to and from the HDD and Xbox having this policy with XSX/XSS games I think Sony will follow suit.

Obviously this a rather big minus for PS5, but this was an ideal situation for PS5 to flex their SSD speed and illustrate how this serious lack of driver space isn't a issue for PS5 at all since downloads and transfers are insanely fast. I mean half of Cerny's talk was about a SSD and they still haven't really showed it of properly and missed a perfect opportunity to do so. Personally I don't think this will be a issue for PS5, but its just another messaging fail from Sony.

I am curious how much Sony and Microsoft are each losing on each console.

How does this compare to XBOX Series? Because the usual suspects are acting like you have 1Tb available over there....
I think its 800 gbs or around there. So about 200 gb difference.
