TV Shows that people went crazy over, but in retrospect were kinda dumb or bad

I'm going to say the second half of Game of Thrones, somewhere along S4 the show decided good writing was for chumps and opted instead to be a hollow spectacle.

So true...
I actually stopped watching it in the middle of S4 (Episode 5 or 6 I think).

My other pick is The Walking Dead. The first season was good and worthwile but after that it was a rollercoaster with all its ups and downs though the Highlights weren't that great to begin with. I stopped it last season, can't be bothered with anymore. Boring af.

Will drop pants for Sony.
Remember how Peter forgot to go back and get his Irish girlfriend when he left her in that horrible nightmare future?

And then probably killed her by altering the future?
They still haven't picked up molly at the airport.

The awesome fantasy stuff is what the books and show were leading up to all along. If you didn't see this coming you weren't paying attention.
Magic swords, ice zombies, and dragons were always in the cards.
These things showed up very early on, albeit in an understated way.

Also if you're going to shit on the spectacular battle from Season 7 Episode 4, I have bad news: you don't like fantasy. Fantasy is not for you any more.

eh, I've read most of the books (skipping Feast) and I've experienced plenty of fantasy fiction. GoT the show S7 (and probably most of S4 and later) is bad fantasy, imho

the battle
of the bastards
was a great battle scene. I thought the one in S7 was awful, and
Dany riding to battle on a dragon just does not work, at all, on TV at least

While the experience of watching Lost as it aired was a top TV experience for me, I can't get through a rewatch.

Junior, please.
Friends the thread. It has aged so terribly that it's now practically unwatchable.

Seinfeld, on the other hand, is like a fine wine. I feel sorry for you if you don't get Seinfeld, it literally changed comedy as a medium.

Breaking Bad
Game of Thrones

WTF, I don't even. 8:05am and I've already had enough internet.

Fantasy is not for you any more.

Yeah, no.
I am fan of Fantasy.
I am not a fan of making a good battle sequence where the main opponents are two characters I couldnt give less of a fuck about.
Who should I root for: The man
that keeps fucking his sister even though shes absolutely insane
or the queen
that burned and tortured innocent men, while also proving to be an idiot every step of the way?

You can make long takes and impressive setpieces and all of that, but if the characters are inconsistent and the dialogue is atrocious then why the fuck am I watching it.

Dont blame fantasy for D&D being incompetent.

everyrhing famous will be trashed by some random poster on internet in 15 years

Lost was terrible. I remember saying half way through the first season that they had no idea where they were going with the plot and having a few people I know tell me that I was crazy and that it being random was great because it would obviously all tie together at some point.

24 - one of the first truly serialized primetime network television shows, and I think the thrill of a having an expansive week-to-week story drew people in and made them ignore rather glaring problems and absurd scenarios. Part of the problem was that writers felt obligated to cover everyone in the ensemble cast and give them their own stories, even if those stories were stupid or inconsequential.

Sorry mate but 24 imo was neither dumb nor bad (I'm talking about it as a whole, first few season are the superior ones). The storylines were miles ahead of all the action procedural crap produced by CBS.and even though some of them were exaggerated you didn't have to constantly shake your head at what's happening.
As for the cast, imo the only reason why minor characters got their spotlight was because it was hard to fill 24 episodes per season with only the main storyline. Even with those fillers in some seasons they clearly had problems with gathering enough material and that would lead to the main crisis ending before the last episode was even aired.

Game of Thrones is FAR from a bad show. It's honestly quite great. It's well shot, the action is great, some fantastic characters and brilliant music.

It is HELLA dumb though. Magic convenient exposition cave, for example.

Lost basicallyvthrived because of the theories people were peddling onnessage boards, work or school... Without that it's a lesser show. It was still fun to do though.

That's what made it one of the best shows for me. I loved chatting with people and reading theories online about where people thought they were going to do next. It was about the journey, not where it ended.

how do you lump sopranos in with that other garbage

ur taste sux

foreal. I just pulled such a big scust face when I saw that OP.

I think Game of Thrones fits the bill though. but I would not call it an outright bad show. but it can often be mediocre. the writing has just gotten progressively worse. its been quite entertaining though now that everything is reaching a conclusion, but they half ass the scripts and most of the performances quite often.

It doesn't matter who we are, what matters is our plan.
The Big Bang Theory is exactly this. Lots of people, including me, got suckered in by the cheap nerd references and guest appearances. But that wore off quickly, and in retrospect is just a bland sit com without anything of any note to its name.

Friends is a terrible answer, considering how popular it continues to be.

Seasons 6 and 7 are the best ones along with 3 in my opinion. Season 5 and 2 are the worst ones. The show has been largely great writing with a few bad instances (Dany's arc in season 2 and Dorne in season 5) mixed in. I think it is stupendous how much they've managed to achieve with Game of Thrones.

All seasons also hold up much better on rewatch.

Gotta agree with people saying Game of Thrones. D&D were never good writers (check their credits prior to Thrones), and the strength of the show was always the source material and the actors. Now that there is no more source material, the show is basic as hell. The show can still get me going with awesome bits of fan service (Ex. s7e4
Arya and Brienne sparring, Seeing Drogon in action
), but at the end of the day D&D are creating a fan-fiction level conclusion.

Also, I almost had a conniption when I saw the OP list the Sopranos. The Sopranos only gets better. Long live David Chase.

This pissed me off that they dropped this story line and the main villain after the writers strike. It was slow going but they could have made a pay off - instead they just ignored it all and followed it worth nothing worth talking about.

Westworld is probably the most glaring example of people liking a show because they're supposed to like it. Season 1 was terrible.

As someone who started to watch it recently, the show is terrible with barely any humor.

I don't know, but have you seen the episode in the parking lot? That is fantastic humour.

I have to agree with Sherlock, it got way too obnoxious between S3 and S4.
The first two seasons were great.

This thread quickly turned into "Popular TV shows I don't like"
Well... it's literally the thread title and OP :p

LOST gets a ton of retroactive hate because the ending sucked. Same story with Battlestar Galactica.
I thought Lost sucked since S2, but for some reason I kept watching because I was still intrigued by all the mysteries and the writers hadn't admitted they were making shit up as they went along yet. And I hated BSG since S1. So no. These shows were poorly written trash since the beginning. The horrible ending is just a natural consequence of that.

Firefly. Joss Whedon trash.
Oh hell no. Firefly is still fucking awesome.

Cntrl + F "House"

Not found.

Wh-wha-why?
Because it doesn't belong in this thread? It was a fun, above average "procedural" style of TV with a highly entertaining and superbly acted lead character. It wasn't high art or anything but it was a fun little show.

LOST is very, very hard to go back to now with any admiration or reverence. Saw like, a random S5 episode recently and was just twisting with cringe.
