Twin Peaks Season 3 OT |25 Years Later...It Is Happening Again

It's occurring to me how Dougie Coop is almost a meditation on luck and chance, similar to the end of "No Country For Old Men." He:

- Falls ass backwards into a ton of money
- Foils multiple assassination attempts on himself
- Has sex with Naomi Watts and seems to have a family that supports him
- Gets promoted at work
- Keeps making friends wherever he goes
- Gets free cake and pie

What I feel is kind of set up is Coop being given a chance to inherit this nice life for himself when he comes to. Would be a nice way to send that character off into the sunset.

---

As an aside, how I miss Jack Nance. I wish he'd show up and drop in a "My Dog Barks Some" or something. Sigh. He'd fit right in, too.

Currently polling second in Australia's federal election (first in the Gold Coast), this feral may one day be your Bogan King.
Thank you again.

EDIT: What I utterly adore about this season is it feels like a culmination of Lynch's prior work, composed of fragments of ideas and concepts exhibited throughout his career. There's stuff in here that is among his best.

A better parallel is Being There, I think. It's not really luck that brings the mind-wiped Cooper success, but the behavior he consistently demonstrates. He mostly stays silent. On the rare occasions when he does speak, he just parrots the other person's words back at them. As it turns out, this is sufficient to appear intelligent and likeable in the eyes of many others.

Mike's assistance helps too, of course.

I'm wondering if in the end good Coop will sacrifice himself to an eternity in the Black Lodge and send real Dougie back out to be with his family.

He's spent 25 years in the lodge already after all.

While I wouldn't put it past Lynch/Frost, I think Cooper is too good of a person to receive that fate. It's almost always the characters that make bad choices that receive a bad end in a Lynch work. And Cooper has been an especially good person this season.

Dougie doesn't sound like that great a guy. Janey-E and Sonny Jim deserve better.

Is there a good writeup on the whole Las Vegas conspiracy? I didn't understand Dougie's drawing on those papers and why Bushnell paid 30m to the bros

(and yeah, I too think he gave off weird vibes, as if he knew Dougie would be in danger when he sends him to them)

The writeup was pointing out that Tom Sizemore was doing fraud with the insurance claims. "The best seller" and for a good reason, he was cheating.

Anthony has been working for Todd to falsify insurance claims to the benefit of Todd's organization (which Mr. C appears to head). The Mitchums are rivals of Todd's on the strip, so Anthony conspired with corrupt cops to claim that a fire in a Mitchum hotel was the result of arson, preventing the Mitchums from receiving $30 million for the damages. Dale/Dougie's lodge powers enabled him to spot the lie and somehow outline it in the case files in a way that Mullins could understand. Before this, his lodge powers also won him half a mil at a Mitchum casino. Todd instructed Anthony to use this to convince the Mitchums that it was Dougie who had screwed them over on the insurance claim as well, hoping that the Mitchums would kill Dougie in retaliation and thus complete the assassination Mr. C had ordered. Instead Mullins' was able to understand the conspiracy and send Dougie with the check (and pie) so the Mitchums were placated.

Now the Mitchums are allies and Anthony has been ordered to kill Dougie. I don't think Mullins is bad, personally, but who knows.

Mullins isn't bad at all. Seems like a father figure to Dougie.

I wonder how much Coop's consciousness was already active in there and very aware that this is the life he's missed. At the start of Ep 5 when Janey-E is trying to send Dougie off to work there's a poignant moment when he looks at Sonny Jim and sheds a tear. Maybe there's more to that "damn good" comment last episode where he sounded just like Coop than meets the eye.

Mullins is great but my favorite Lucky 7 employee is Phil.

Just the way he stands—Josh Fadem is a fantastic physical comedian and Twin Peaks gives him the chance to show that a lot more than Better Call Saul.

I'm with you. I can sorta see why people are reading him sending Dougie into the maw of the Mitchums as malicious, but I think it was just slightly misguided.
Yes, big fan of Constance, the morgue lady, as well. Hope she gets more screen time.

#1 is obviously Chad, the most lovable guy ever, but yeah she's #2.
You all seem to be forgetting about Jesse.

Verdict's out on Jesse until we see his car.

Baby Dougie is definitely sparking shit in Coop's mind. He's smitten with the kid. It's so beautifully written.

Real talk: aside from Janey-E, Mullins is the best new character. I love his scenes with Dougie.

Mullins is the director of the insurance place right?

His first name Bushnell? Because that's another reference to Lynch's formative years. The first studio space he ever had was rented from and shared with an artist called something Bushnell.

Good shout, although you can't downplay the role that the Lodge played in his luck.

I feel it will be setting up a decision for Coop: try to face the Doppleganger, challenge the Lodge/the horrors that are happening, OR stay with Janey-E and live a normal life.

He'll definitely choose the former, but I think that'll be a key decision.

That damn restaurant scene is so fucking good. I've rewatched it a couple of times since the episode aired

Just seven hours left people.

I'm excited for 'Let's Rock!' but it's spiked with sadness knowing that in a little over a month, the ride will be over.

Maybe Lynch will give two rides, but I don't know if I'd be happy about that in the face of favourite characters succumbing to real life deaths.

Seven hours is loads. It's like the length of season one.

What I really want to know in the next 7 episodes (other than how's Annie) is why Coop had to be stuck in the Lodge for 25 years. We presumed all these years that he was just dealt a bad hand at the end of S2 (which was probably how it was intended at the time) but it seems Frost and Lynch have written a purpose around the 25 year gap, especially after what we saw in Ep 8, we now know Laura Palmer herself seems to exist to serve some tragic purpose and that she wasn't just some random victim.

I thought it was something to do with the fact that he entered the lodge with imperfect courage (running away from the doppleganger).

He ran from his doppelganger instead of facing him down, and then the stars didn't align for the lodge to open again for 25 years.

I am slowly catching up but what the fuck is Chrysta Bell and why is she in this, she's absolutely awful. She is posing weirdly in almost every scene and absolutely vacant. If Albert and Cole weren't so great I'd be completely distracted at how useless she seems to be.

Everything else is completely top notch though. Loving this season thus far.

I'd rather it just come to a conclusive ending. We're honestly still so lucky to be getting this 3rd season.

The Return has honestly been far better than I had imagined it would be. It's different while maiming the feel of the original show. I'm so glad it's not like these recent franchise revivals that exist only to cater to nostalgia.

THIS. I understand people's complaints but I'm just so glad they didn't play it safe with this new season. I have no idea what to expect going into each episode and I love that.

This show is her first acting experience.

I'm sure this has already been brought up (maybe beaten to death?) but I was thinking the other day if Coop never comes back the season could be a commentary on nostalgia and how it effects our expectations/impressions of a work and just life in general.

I had a vision in my head the other night of the last scene of the series being like 20 years in the future and Dougie/Coop is still in a daze shuffling around at a retirement home...

btw, Dusk Golem is the biggest Peaks FREAK according to the post count.

did that Bam Bam guy ever come back after the last episode aired?

There's been a bit of that already I think. Rose tinted glasses can paint a picture of something that was not in line with what the work was. When we think about season 1+2 we tend to think of cherry pie and coffee and not when Bob/Leland horrifically murders Maddie.

Nostalgia is a tough thing to nail, just look at The Force Awakens. A lot of folks hate that movie cause it's too much like ANH. Personally I think callbacks in this new season like Nadine owning a drape running business is the best kind of callback. Quick winks at the fans that don't become the focus of the story.

Before anyone says it: yes I want Cooper, I want him so bad. But I trust when he does wake up it'll be even more satisfying than it had if Dougie had never been a thing.

I want to see more of James. He wasn't the best part of season 2, but I'm curious to see what he's been upto all this time. He might have gotten better as an actor too in all these years. Who was that guy he was with at the bar? Is there anything we know about 2017 James?

His actor said his role this season is small but "significant".

That he's as cool as he's always been.

Yeah very lucky considering a few of the returning actors/actresses are no longer with us. Unless they shift the focus to the newer characters and slim down the cast of returning ones, I can't imagine another season happening. And I don't know if I would want a season 4 without Albert :(
