They literally have no money for it. If you have money in your bank account right now, you have more money than the city of Detroit.

All the more reason we should push for Detroit to get the bid. The whole country would have to step in to help them. Rebuild the American dream starting in Detroit.

Detroit would be awesome just to see the marathon going through all the burned out parts of the inner core. Might result in a record time.

A Texas bid makes sense.
The key is maintaining budget and avoiding major debt. The american hosts have done pretty good with this.

There should be less importance in having top notch facilities for each event. A combo of existing facilities plus some new venues for cities that want them anyway are good choices. IOC should consider financial responsibility instead of expecting new facilities for everything.

Having the Olympics in your city is amazing. And it is isn't necessarily a financial black hole if it is run decently.

I haven't been to many places in the US, but I really liked San Diego. So...there?

There were three in the US between 1984 and 2002 (if you count winter).
And we had a World Cup during that stretch too. But for me, that's exactly why we shouldn't get it in 2024, give someone else a chance and stop the economic drain on us that the Olympics represents. As for the World Cup, F corrupt FIFA, if you turn down the best bid in favor of the absolute riskiest one, the US shouldn't even waste the time trying to get it again. Gives us a reason to see the world.

You have faith that Texas can do that? The state of corporate welfare and big contracts?

Exactly. Though I've only been through Detroit once, and it was when I was very young and don't remember it, the stuff I read and hear about it sounds like a nightmare. Even just an Olympic bid would be a very positive thing for that city. The one poster who posted those pictures of abandoned Detroit venues is the exact image that city needs to be doing all it can to get rid of. I think even just a bid would do wonders for that city.

It would be putting a band aid on a gaping wound.

Detroit. My city is hosting the Commonwealth Games in a run-down, deprived area of the city next year and is using it as to regenerate the area. If things were done properly then the games could have a long lasting positive effect on the place. Only if it's handled correctly though.

The Olympics in Detroit?

Is this Bizarro World?

At least the Olympic events won't be so mind-numbingly boring.

Oh! I know what city you are refering to and...Well, I'm just going to leave this here.

btw, I agree with your post.

Don't put up shitholes like orlando etc.

The ioc want. Chicago, NY, Boston, LA, San Fran, Dallas

Have a look at the last few

Sydney, athens, beijing, london, then rio, then probably tokyo, then a big name US city, then one of the major euro capitals (paris).

So take out all the mid size beasts with little international recognition and offer up the ones the ioc want.

Chicago won't do it. The Daleys blocked it for years and only relented for 2016 because he knew he was going to be retired and wouldn't have to deal with it. Now that Rahm is in charge, he's going to block it for the same reasons.

Wasn't it Chicago's fault for being too presumptuous last time? You're not supposed to throw down billions of dollars on a bid. That's like gambling with tax payers money. If you already have the facilities needed then it's not much of a risk. Didn't a former Chicago Mayor tear down an airport for a prospective Olympic village?

How the hell would San Jose win a bid over San Francisco Lol? San Francisco and San Jose as a joint bid would be interesting. But Pittsburgh please!

Vegas baby

As awesome as that would be, the IOC would be scared shitless the entire 2 weeks their athletes were there. The city of sin probably won't mesh with the pristine values of the IOC, but I can dream. Rio would be a decent measuring stick to test hosting in a city rampant with prostitution and hardcore drugs.
