UFC 148 |OT| Shattering the myth that is Anderson Silva - 7.7.2012

Sonnen made zuffa a lot of money this weekend because of his tireless promotion of this fight. The pro wrestling promos brought in a lot of casual viewers to see him succeed or fail. More fighters should follow his lead tbh. This was a big fight because its been building for 2 years. To borrow from my good friend dream, these dumb joes don't know how to promote themselves.

This is absolutely true.

The worst is the after fight interviews. UFC always asks the question "who do you want to fight next?"

They don't ask that question for their health, dummy. They want you to have a clue and mention a few top names so people will give a shit about your next fight and you can make money.

Instead, you get the lame "I'll fight whoever..."

Well, shit, if you don't care, why should the casual fan at home?

How many of those years will he still be dominant though? Father Time is undefeated and he catches EVERYONE.

I agree with you, and I would love to see Andy retiring in a fight against Bones.

Bones would win, not because of superior technique, I honestly believe Anderson is better in that regard. He would win out of sheer physical superiority. Bones right now is way better in that regard than Andy ever was IMO.

And while I do think Andy has better technique now, Bones is still really young and has a lot of time to improve even more, so in the future he can top Andy on that too. He seems like a fast learner.

Dude is truly blessed, he has the perfect physic for a fighter and the brains to go with that.

Yeah, like I said, Chael is on the extreme end (in terms of trash talk) but it doesn't even need to be based around that.

Just become marketable outside your skillset in the octagon.

And hell yes, the build up/hype is what got me to buy the PPV without much consideration.

I WANTED TO SEE HOW IT WOULD END.

The UFC needs to do a better job of promoting these fights/fighter and whatnot to the non-insiders, imo.

Pretty much. There's no one outside of Sonnen that gets heat is there?

Just make me care one way or the other.

Cheer or Jeer.

I had my head down in the computer for every single one of those undercard matches on FX.

THAT'S BAD.

I honestly cannot believe Chad Mendes did not call out management for having him face Candy Mckenzie especially considering Joe Rogan and Goldberg talked about how he was arguably the number #2 featherweight.

You musn't go overboard with this though. It's okay (and right) to hype legitimate fights, such as (some) championship bouts, but you really shouldn't hype every shit. At some point people grow tired of it and it falls back on you.
There is no upside to saying I'll fight whoever joe Silva puts in front of me.

Yeah. I'm glad I got to see Sonnen's ass kicked but that was dirty Silva. He was doing it while the camera is facing straight at him, zoomed in lol

It is the GSP special although GSP likes to spit water on himself also to mix with it from the corner.
It is honestly a very much used tactic by many fighters and this is the first time I am seen it actually cracked down on officially before the bell.

The official came and wiped him off before the fight even began. Are you saying they applied more during the break after Round 1? lol

Getting crushed is the best thing to happen to Mckenzie, hopefully he will realize this is not for him.

Bones goes for the spinning elbow more than the fist if I am not mistaken, he has nasty elbows.

Just because gifs of Bones taking Shogun's manhood never get old:

I agree with you that he is blessed, but he hasn't tested the stand of time. He has essentially only fought 4 top fighters. True champions need to be tested, like Silva in Sonnen vs Silva I.

GSP is unique out of the 3 PFP as he got tested early in his championship before he became a dominant champion.

Sonnen didn't do too bad as some of you are making out. The spinning backhand was a joke but the fact he got the takedown that Anderson would have been ready for within 5 secs and then full mount late was huge. He planned to grind out a win thats the way he fights.

I like Silva as much as the next guy but give credit where credit is due. Most would have predicted Silva to destroy Sonnen within that first.

Andy acknowledged in TV that Sonnen had a good first round, and that he have been training takedowns his whole life, but he was prepared to be under him.

Yep it's like all these guys think they can get over on their in ring(octagon?) performance alone.

Like if UFC is gonna have so many PPVs at least try to make some feuds otherwise we're just watching Cena vs Cena saying I respect the hell out of ya and I don't care who I fight next and I'm here for the UFC universe!

Yeah- everyone keeps talking about the knee, but the shorts grab (pictured several posts above *edit*- on previous page) was what I was kind of taken aback by. That started when they were tied up in the fence and Chael dropped for a double. Anderson clearly grabs the waistband of Chael's shorts and literally pulls him back up with his shorts. The whole time he's using his left hand, and the ref is on the opposite side where he couldn't see it.

Blatant cheating or salty veteran move? You decide.

As for the knee- that's a non issue. Clearly to the chest/sternum. It's a bad rule anyway, one that should never have been implemented. Knees to the head of a downed opponent are no more dangerous than knees to the head from the Thai plum, and they're certainly no more dangerous than repeated elbows to the temple from full mount. It's just a bad rule- promotes stalling and sitting on one's ass after a failed shot or scramble, and it robs us of exciting opportunities for action on the ground with no benefit of added fighter safety. In fact, you could make the case that Chael sat on his butt in the fence after missing with that backfist because he thought he was protected by this very rule. Bad move on his part. And it's a bad rule.

The card wasn't great.

Sonnen is an idiot for trying that spin.

What's the controversy? I just got home. That knee was right to the center of the chest. Chael didn't have any complaints this time, neither did the ref.

NASCAR drivers have more media personality than most of these guys.

How does that happen?

Also, and this is where I'll give Chael some props: not everybody can talk shit like he does. He got overbearing and repetitive fairly quickly to me but few fighters have his aptitude for smack-talk and it would be downright painful and pitiful to see a lot of these other guys attempt something similar.

Yeah man, I wonder who is going to be Bones version of Chael Sonnen...he needs one! Lol!

I can't see no one getting close to him right now. It would be really great to see him really work for a win. He makes everyone looks so easy.

Machida had a good first round against him and then was just utterly destroyed.

The official came and wiped him off before the fight even began. Are you saying they applied more during the break after Round 1? lol

Yeah, they caught him. It had no affect on the fight but to think da gawd silva would try and resort to that makes me lose a little respect for him.

True champions need to be tested? Yeah I guess, but who is he supposed to fight other than the people they throw at him? He has beaten everyone that's come at him and if those opponents aren't good enough, that's Dana's problem because it means he doesn't have the roster.

Silva grabbed Sonnen's shorts for a while. Silva got a warn because of that. Outside that, nothing, just the same whine you'll get after the fight from the losers. =)

When asked about the knee Chael says, "I hate those rules anyways. I don't care about legal or illegal. I could see it coming, that's just the way it goes."

Not you too, Ply.

SAY IT AIN'T SO
He may be GOAT, but for someone who seemed to be trying to speak about how important the sport was at the end there, he sure attempted to employ dirty tactics. From bumping Sonnen, to shoulder checking, to greasing, to short grabbing and the questionable knee. The fact is that Anderson da Silva just shot himself in the foot.

I don't know how much the rest of you know about MMA culture (I'm an expert since Pride), but honor and shame are huge parts of it. It's not like it is in wrestling where you can become successful by being an asshole. If you screw someone over in MMA, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.

What this means is the casual MMA public, after hearing about this, is not going to want to purchase PPV's for either fighter, nor will they purchase any of UFC's games. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but Silva has alienated an entire market with this move.

Anderson, publicly apologize and end your championship reign or you can kiss your business goodbye.

Well I personally think Silva and GSP could beat him. They have the experience to win those long matches. It would most likely be a boring match.

I personally think Bones is amazing but just slightly overrated due to just looking so dynamic and exciting in the match. Some of those boring matches GSP and Silva have had in the past, are true examples of how champions stay champions. I could see someone like Bones get frustrated. They learn your game plan during the first round, then throw you off your game plan and wait for a mistake.

Also the veteran "win at any option" techniques like grabbing shorts, grabbing the cage, greasing if possible, etc is another advantage to Silva and GSP.

An exciting champion <> the best champion.

What does Pro Wrestling have to do with MMA?

damn I did this before, it never gets old lol

:Lol. Something's wrong Nascar guys know how to build up their races and actually have some feuds compared to UFC guys.

That's my point, Nelo.

That's why when someone says, "Good." when I say I have no further hooks into the sport as a casual and may "retire", I honestly don't get that reaction.

I'm sure the UFC would like to grow the brand, not have it trend the same numbers.

How does that happen?

A wise man once wrote this:

It's so safe. Everything is so safe. Joe Silva books safe fights where nobody gets too far ahead with a win or falls too far behind with a loss. The fighters fight so safe because they misguidedly believe they're lucky to even be there in the house that Randy, Tito, and Chuck built. They say the safest things because they want to be seen as classy gentlemen worthy of blue chip sponsorships. Everything is just so goddamn safe.

Pretty much what I though. I heard the warning about the shorts but didn't really see it happen.

edit: damn you Ply, I was going to seriously respond before I read that again.

Yeah I know. That's why it's incredible that UFC has not gotten anyone to at least try build up their fights. Everyone besides Chael seems to follow the John Cena style of promos and well no one gives a damn to see that. Also yeah I honestly would not have cared about this card at all if it weren't for Chael building up the feud.

Also what's this about Tito wanting to be a movie star? First he's taking the Rock's gimmick now he wants to follow his path into movies? :lol.
