The question is, does Meathead give a fuck?

I had to check in to make my one prediction of the night, which is that Bones will absolutely murder Tomato Can #1634. I predict death by hellbows.

Jon Jones going to show how big small of a draw he actually is.
Very little hype and the card is basically riding on him

Every Bones card has been absolute shit, and it's got nothing to do with him. I think he's a bigger draw than people think, because the UFC always packages him with dreck. That means he must be able to pull in good enough numbers that they feel like saving the good support fights for the other main eventers that need it.

I have no idea why GSP and Silva always get such good support cards, but it's the way it is. People always make comments like this, like Bones isn't a draw, but then ignore that literally every single card he's been on has been shitty. He doesn't book the cards, so this is a business decision Dana and Zuffa are making, and it must be making them money. PEACE.

Gus has a great chin so most likely we will get 4 rounds out of the fight.

If Gus has no ground game, expect him to spend most of 2 rounds on the ground eating vicious elbows before having the fight stopped. The problem with beating Jones is that he's got one of the most complete fighting games in the company. People said he couldn't stand with Lyoto, but put him out on his feet. He's smart, and despite the hate, Greg Jackson is a great coach. They'll have a gameplan, and if Gus disrupts it by some miracle, Bones can just go balls-out like he did against Vitor and Chael and finish them with Plan B. PEACE.

GSP doesn't need good support cards. He carried a co-main event of Sean McCorkle vs. Stefan Struve to 800k buys.

Right, but how many of his cards have actually been good? It's one thing to say he doesn't need one, but then ignore that he has had far more than Bones. If you never get a good support card to drive up buys, how can you expect Bones to increase his fanbase? Bones has had ZERO good cards, which is a huge drop down from the number both GSP and Anderson have enjoyed during their reigns. Yet, he's arguably the most-exciting champ since Anderson. His fights have certainly been more entertaining than GSP the decision machine. PEACE.

young mauler new champ saturday believe
It would be nice if this were the year of the upset in the UFC. Overeem getting exposed and Anderson getting caught while clowning wouldn't compare to Jones losing to this guy. Benson... was expected, though I doubt many expected that seven-fight win streak to be snapped in round one.

Even so I'll throw my hat in the ring with Gustafsson. Y'know, for shits and giggles.

Yeah Jones lacks charisma. He is one of the best fighters but his ppv will still be behind people like Tito who are completely washed up. That doesn't mean that Jones isn't one of the best fighters currently.

Both Gus and Wineland are betting on their hands in these fights, it'll be nice if we get two good scraps.

Gus just about beat a over the hill Shogun. He has nothing for Jones.
Tbf to Gus though I think Shogun looked much better in that fight than he did against Jones, even taking into account the way the fights went. He was leaner, moving better etc...

I think Gus might be better than some people are giving him credit for. His wrestling actually looked pretty good against Davis, but he fell into that trap of trying to out-grapple the grappler instead of disengaging after a successful defence, like Silva/Sonnen I, Kongo/Velasquez, Shogun/Sonnen. One has to assume that he's improved a fair bit from that point. Still think Jones will win though.

For me the last time Shogun looked good was the first Machida fight. He doesn't move or kick at all due to all the previous knee injuries. I just don't think Gus decisioning current Shogun is huge.

Edit: I want to see a competitive fight but I can't see that happening. Hope I'm wrong though.

Yup. Shogun's done.

Injuries took their toll, and then Jones emasculated him. It's hard to come back from that.

I agree that the first Machida fight was his best most recent showing, but I think you're overlooking/misremembering the Gustafsson fight. Shogun was throwing kicks and moving pretty well (especially compared to his performance against say, Vera), at least for the first half of the fight. I also don't think Gus winning by decision should be held against him given Shogun's chin. Once again though, I don't think that fight proves Gus is a world-beater or should be favoured against Jones, just that it was a better win than some treat it.

I'm not too familiar with Jones' output, what are his top three fights so I can get prepared?
I'm not sure if they're the top three but Shogun, Machida and Sonnen were his quickest wins at the top level and showcase his skills in both striking and grappling.

Wonderful use of a GIF and needs to be quoted.

Also, a buddy paid a lot of money to go to the event and was not even able to tell me who else is fighting. Not sure if that makes the card very boring or him too trigger happy when it comes to spending money.
I guess Montreal is getting all the real events.

Sorry Commander. Ilir Latifi has as good as a chance as Gus.

I meant your incorrect spelling of Gustafsson (:

Will try to be up for the ME, but I'm going out tonight so it's doubtful I'll manage to stay awake/wake up at 6AM when it starts :(

Jones vs Shogun so you can see where the Jones era begins. (look for me in the stands)

Jones vs Machida so you can see Jones dump gaming side's mma God like a bag of garbage.

Jones vs Vera so you can see the finest example of hellbows.

Had a dream last night where the fight was spoiled for me by my brother texting me of the upset win by Gus.

Believe!

I still tend to favor Jones vs Bonnar as one of his top fights. Seeing a guy with relatively little experience absolutely ragdoll a 10 year veteran of the sport really puts across just how dominant he's always been.

It's also a great example of how a decision win isn't necessarily a boring fight.

Jones has done that to everyone to be fair.

Whilst a lot of fighters went into a slump after being destroyed by Jones (Rashad lost his desire to fight, Bader lost to Tito, etc) most recovered.

Since his fight with Jones, Shogun's went from the No. 1 LHW to outside of the top ten. Machida, Rashad and even Bader are still in the top ten. Vitor seems to have taken his Jonesing as a motivational aid (stacked & cycled with TRT of course) and Sonnen's still Sonnen.

The only other victim of Jones to fall so far and never recover is Brandon Vera. We'll see how Rampage fares in Bellator.

Both have used their height and reach as a big part of their striking defence. The hits that do come through have to travel upwards, losing a bit of sting and giving the recipient time to prepare. It will be interesting to see what happens when that's not really on the table.

has anyone tested Bones's chin? from memory, can't remember anyone landing good shots in the last couple of years.

If I remember correctly, Rampage and Rashad got in a lucky hit in forcing Jones to run away and reset his range - no-one's dazed him or made him do the chicken dance yet.

Machida got some punches in too. Not for too long thought..

If someone lands a punch against Jones, his first reaction after re-establishing range is to start using his elbows. The fact his elbow range is roughly the same as other fighters' punching range is a massive deterrent (to say the very least), and ensures that the range of the fight is dictated by Jones. Rashad learnt that the hard way.

Am I the only one who likes Phlipou, dude has got some power in his hands. Plus he is cypriot.

I doubt anyone on GAF will be cheering for Carmont. He's everything wrong with modern fighters, as in he possesses the skills and athleticism to beat almost anyone, but willingly chooses to take the safest route possible in order to get the luck of the decision.

Don't get me wrong, if you're a champion and/or have multiple high-level sponsorships that are reliant on a winning streak then I'll look the other way. But if you've been hyped up as a potential contender and are content with boring people to death then you're killing the sport - plain and simple.

Hopefully Philippou wins with a quick finish.
