I feel like you didn't read my entire post, but id argue no ND game is sold on making it's characters attractive to the audience any more than convention... especially when most of the main characters are males.

Frey actress is a supermodel. She is gorgeous. And in game model is perfect. She is not masculine at all. And has a fun straight to the point ny teen character.

There are a bunch of closely related issues driving the reaction, and as per usual its the most extreme (or maybe least nuanced is more accurate) positions that are being taken as the bedrock.

The actual basis of dissatisfaction is the inherent double-standard in the oft-claimed motivation that "representation is important". Because when that is presented its silently caveated with "for marginalized groups", when as it turns out representation seems to matter to EVERYONE.

The slightly androgynous, mixed-race heroine does not represent the majority of the audience, or what they aspire to look like, and they are reacting to that.

Secondly, its a cliche already through over-use. Its the modern version of Poochie The Surfer Dog.

Lastly, there are *some* reactionary types who are pushing their politics just as hard as the woke-types who inspired the trend in the first place; who will act out at the least provocation, even when criticism isn't really warranted, because they sense an opportunity to press their agenda.

This is not rocket science. We as humans are hardcoded to enjoy beauty. That's why ugly videogame characters or real life situations like ugly architecture, art, car design, anything really evokes such a primal reaction. It just doesn't feel right and this whole current zeitgeist where striving towards beauty is seen as "problematic" and utter mediocrity and ugliness is celebrated is a very big problem.

Aesthetics are a very important part of humanity. Or at least, they've always been.

I firmly believe any game developer has the right to make whatever game they please, for whatever audience they want. But equally, the audience has a right to not buy it, and not like it.

But these are massive corporate undertakings that have to make millions, so when they don’t, they can’t possibly put the blame on themselves. Instead it’s our fault, the consumer.

It is quite spectacularly fucked up, and this period in popular culture will be studied at length in the future, to try and understand why there was such a massive disconnect.
