Surely allowing online voting would be a massive shakeup to everything?

It'd be a great idea, and it works for Estonia. Now there would be a whole host of security issues to look at and overcome, but I don't think it'd be impossible to do so.

It'd probably be a better start to change our electoral system away from first past the post though. In our current system, you could change who forms the UK government just by switching a few thousand votes around, targeting key marginals. That'd be a very tempting target to interfere with. But switch to PR and adding a few thousand votes to Party A's total isn't going to change a damn thing.

I had a Fillet o Fish for lunch, because fuck getting what I actually asked for, which was a raspberry ripple shake.

Fucking horrendous. I know part of that was because I was pissed off about not getting the shake, but fucking hell does McDonald's taste like shit. I remember when I used to want this shit all the time growing up.

I was so pissed I almost voted Conservative. Almost. Cooler heads prevailed and Labour got some afternoon delight.

Their cheese quarterpounders and vanilla milkshakes are still legit tho

and the breakfast muffins

fuck everything else

Just bit the bullet and voted Labour despite deep reservations over whether they have the competence to take us through Brexit without major screwups. I hope it was the right choice.

Oh come on, most of the world's business is run online, I fail to believe we can't implement a decent system

Our local town centre car park has an automatic payment system. It checks your number plate when you arrive, then when you leave, and charges you the appropriate amount. It's brilliant.

This week the system started billing some people thousands of pounds for a 20m stay. Or in one case, a dozen or so £400 payments for someone who hadn't even been there. In the end they turned it off. And it still kept billing people.

This is why we can't vote online.

Well at least we know that they are more competent than Theresa May. Someone who often doesn't show up, and when they do are unable to deviate from an existing script.

Or comes out with insane statements like "No deal is better than a bad deal!" with a straight face.

The very concept of a 'Brexit negotiation' blows my mind.

It would be like handing in my notice at work, then sitting down with the boss and asking how much of my salary he'll continue to pay me after I've gone.

I've just been to vote and in the 2 minutes I was there, I saw at least 20 voters come and go. I don't believe you.

Why? Today was the first time I've ever seen someone else there (other than my parents). Not hard when you live in a rural area

So, finally got off my computer chair, took a break from learning how to code and went and voted.

I voted Conservative. I believe a low tax economy allows everyone to have a chance to get rich if they tried hard enough. Let the job creators create the good jobs of the future. Also strong and stable.

That was a joke. Labour got my vote.

You don't even need ID to vote at the moment. I refuse to believe online voting is flat out impossible.

It's possible, just opens up far too many potential issues. My biggest concern is seeing how many people get massively fired up at election time, and imagining how far they might go to force their partners to vote the same way as themselves if they are allowed to vote at home on the computer. Especially in violent relationships. At least with our current system you definitely get your own booth, there are other people there definitely making sure you have private space, and you definitely get to place it in a secure box that no-one will ever be able to see and trace back to you.

There are of course massive cyber crime concerns too, but I know enough women who have been in abusive relationships in the past to make me worried about this issue.

Holy shit don't do that to me =P I was about to rant about how I'M a job creator but not rich, and that the Tories plans would screw over my ability to continue creating jobs and fully-paid training opportunities for young ecologists.

You could allow for multiple votes, with only the last one counting. That'd solve that problem.

That sort of coercion may happen with postal votes at the moment so not much would change in that regard, really, would it?

It is, and it's one of the huge criticisms about postal votes. I'd love to see them scrapped, with emphasis placed on employers to guarantee employees the opportunity to be at home to vote on election days.

tbh I think it would take away some of the severity of what you're doing. There's a certain tension you feel in a booth would be taken away much like that of an online petition, also yeah it'd be well insecure mates

Think I've successfully added all the predictions made in-time to the spreadsheet. I've asked people with blanks to fill them in, but I'll leave it highlighted just in case it becomes a point of contention.

Quote to reveal the link to the spreadsheet:

Based on the reception the Labour manifesto has had according to polling, I think that is pretty untrue. The reality of the situation is that people falter for other reasons.

E:

Online and in fact ANY kind of electronic voting is a terrible idea.

The reality if Tory win under their manifesto it's probably true, people will vote Tory despite some good policies and well meaning speeches from Labour. The rise and reception of Labour does not disprove my point and is actually part of it. Of course some of what Corbyn has outlined is popular to a part of the country, how can it not be, it's election bullets points 101. I can see many people in the centre will reluctantly vote Tory, they know May has done a shit job but fear the worst with Corbyn despite raising some good issues. A centre left figure who's not hard socialist and stating policies about police and NHS would clean up against this Tory lot.

Also the Brexit segment won't trust Corbyn to take us fully out and reluctantly vote Tory.

Yeah same here. Was going to vote LD, but corbyn's words the other day about standing up to SA and calling them out on their sick terrorism bs got my vote.

Also spoke to the nice man at the local polling station, mentioed they have been quite busy today, and the ballot box was quite full by 5pm,which hopefully is a good sign as we have a labour rep as our councilman for quite a while.

Oh, and all my family voted for labour.

Voted (Labour). Got my traditional voting day chippy in. Now to settle down to watch Yes, Minister for the first time until 10.

I have got Coke, Vodka, Cider, cake, crisps, biscuits, M&Ms in for tonight. I feel I've got this down to a routine by now. Definitely since 2010.

The girlfriend is off at work, she'll be producing overnight coverage on the local station she works at. So it's me on the sofa with TV, Twitter and most importantly GAF for company.

Might get a little nap in before 10pm, and also I'm next to a McDs which could be an emergency breakfast.

It's nice to get excited about this as an event, because I'm dreading the result. It's the geeky superbowl, you'll stay up late, watch a lot of stuff that's just killing time, and a good chance you'll be depressed with how it went but you'll do it again next time round.

That was interesting. Just voted in Swansea (labour) and noticed that my local polling station, which is pretty quiet, was actually busy. I asked the people manning it if they had been busy to which they replied "Yeah very busy" I asked them the age ranges of people voting and they said it was a good mix of young and old. Now here's the thing my area has a lot of old people in it so the youth must be turning out. Hell I saw three student types just leaving after having voted and you NEVER see that round here on polling days.
Still it's a pretty safe labour area but I hope that Labour take back the Gower. Everyone was stunned in swansea when it went tory last time.

The US election system is terrible. And the reason is again very simple, you cannot trust the software running on those machines.
Think of the US election again, several election machine vendors were involved in the Russian attacks. There is no telling what they can do.

Yep. It was a public issue questionned back in 2013 in France, and every report said that the old-fashionned way was the most secure and democratic form of suffrage, taking the US system as a counter-example.

The real issues of our representative democraties aren't there anyway : people not registered and not voting (correlated with low diploma, revenue and any form of capital) should be the top priority and electronic/online voting won't change this dramatic phenomenom that breaks equality. There are real solutions out there that can revive our democracies, some moderate, some more extreme (meaning they "break" the current system) but it's all there.
