The Boris election was a third Tory votes, a third joke votes and a third anti-Livingstone.. nothing to do with Brown.

Wake up Sheeple, your boring insistence that Obama is not a lizardman from Atlantis is wearing on my patience 💤
First call from Labour for Brown to step down.

It begins...

Does anyone honestly think Cameron is going to neuter his chances of becoming PM in order to stop a political reform referendum. I think he'll at least go for it if it becomes a pre-requisite for LD support, but god knows what the rest of his party would do.

I can't see a LD/Con coalition lasting very long as Cameron wants all the power and doesn't want to share it. We live in interesting times.

I reckon this time it's gonna happen.
Am I the only one who thinks Brown is in a strong position here when it comes to the issue of his leadership of the Labour party? 1. he didn't lead Labour into complete annihilation as widely expected 2. he is still the Prime Minister, if he resigns then the Queen would be roundedly criticised if she then asked another Labour MP if he can form a government without asking the leader with the largest number of seats first. 3. A second Labour PM imposed onto the electorate without consulting the electorate with an election would be pretty breathtaking, even by Labour's standards.

Ergo, if Labour forces Brown out then they will probably lose their only real chance of staying in power. Of course I would welcome this scenario and a minority Tory government, but I'm just demonstrating that Brown is in a far better position right now than people seem to realise.

The public argument over vote reform is getting interesting. Conservative mps and party members coming out and saying that no voter brought it up with them, then protests like that one on the other end. I'm sure Clegg would like these protests to continue to put pressure on the conservatives, they're more powerful than some MPs in front of a mic.

It's spin from the tories as i find it hard to believe that the tories wouldn't run into a Lib Dem voter who named it as a crucial thing though, but i'd think there's some underlying truth to it. I don't think people are really that informed about what political reform means, we haven't really had a national debate on the issue, Clegg didn't really explain it in the leaders debate when he had rare attention for his platform, and we haven't had a really obvious injustice like the Lib Dems getting more votes than Labour but vastly less seats to very clearly break it as a system. It's supported by the majority if someone frames the argument like "Change the voting system for electing MPs, so that individual constituencies become much larger and parties are represented in parliament broadly in line with their national vote.", but i don't think people really know about why it's a problem, so don't think or care about it.

anyone want a new thread or is this one good enough?

perhaps we should wait for a coalition before making a new one?
Could have two threads, see if they work together, maybe have another minor thread be part of the discussion too. The main thing is that the thread remains stable.

Is anyone else getting a bit ragged off with all this? Monday? Come on, get your shit together! In an age where people are clamouring for political reform and transparency, we're putting up with back room deals and scraps of information.

Come the fuck on, we've done our job, now you do yours! Make deals sure, but tell the people whats is REALLY going on every step of the way. Fuck sake.

It is one big huge dilemma, since Brown is simultaneously
(a) the best chance of keeping Labour in power with a coalition agreement
(b) the biggest obstacle to coming up with a coalition agreement in the first place

There's no way out of it.

Still, I'd like to see him stay on as leader just for the entertainment value of the next PMQs when all his pet projects get ditched

I reckon we get a tory minority government, with lib dem support on a queens speech and promising not to launch a vote of no confidence for at least a year, in exchange for a cabinet seat (clegg at foreign office). then the tories call an election this time next year.

Clegg is negotiating with a right wing cabal who seek to suppress the will of the average voter so that they may keep power at all costs. This is not something to be treated lightly.

Coalition negotiations can take some time. They have till May 25th. This is an entirely natural process that occurs in most democracies across the world.

Could he form a coaltion on the basis that he helps get PR through before standing down? (potentially calling another election under PR at the same time)

Video of it now on Youtube. Very funny. "Sky news is shit...switch off your TV!" :lol

:lol

I tend to watch Sky a lot, but watching the BBC mostly on this election, and comparing against Sky and how it 'casts' the news on this election, it's not hard to see that Murdoch agenda shine through a bit. Nothing like the newspapers, but still there, subtly.

Build your own coalition government:

With the SNP and Plaid Cymru offering support for a progressive party with electoral reform if I was LD I would be tempted to go away. I reckon Clegg is playing hardball in an attempt to get rid of Brown.

Labour + LD + Alliance party + SNP + PD = 325 seats.

SDLP are shoe-ins. They carry the Labour whip already. Given Labour's comments they might swap SDLP for SNP in such a coalition, would yield 325 seats also.

Alliance member also confirmed to go with Labour/SDLP last I heard.

Caroline Lucas also likely to do the same.

SNP are basically desperate. Plaid might be a stumbling block. All the minors know that all they need is to hold the referendum, which they will win quite easily and then....new election.

Coalition manoeuvring will never be out in the open - everything that the public hear will be bullshit and positioning. This is the way it has to be, or else no-one could feel they could secure the best deal.
