Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 |OT2| New Age of Zeroes

(her expansion assist is technically one of the best assists in the game basically on par with Tatsu assist).
You've lost your mind. Health is a factor in assist choices. It's the main reason Sentinel got nerfed. Plus, the recovery on block isn't as good, which is a major part of why Tatsu is great. The reason Phoenix is hard to use on point is because of her low damage output. Otherwise I'd use her on point all day over Dormammu for her teleports and tridashes.

Phoenix is definitely my other calling. Holy shit, get meter stolen? No problem, build that shit by herself! Tired of jump back but afraid of eating a counter grab? Chip them out with the highest durability fireball in the game! Beam characters? Scout the beam and one frame teleport behind them.

Yeah, I'm putting work into this one. I knew I'd like this play since Vanilla.
Just watch out for Vajra...

Point Ultimate regular Jean play?

I could sort of get behind it in Vanilla but not in Ultimate. It's fairly lackluster. You are better off trying to use Phoenix as an assist character (her expansion assist is technically one of the best assists in the game basically on par with Tatsu assist).
It's definitely an underrated assist. With Dormammu you can j.S, c.LH, call her assist, Mass Change M, and catch them in a jump loop.

Phoenix on point is definitely not a great idea with Doom becoming so popular along with Vajra. Also, Jam Session and Mystic Ray are nightmares. It can work, but you probably can't play without an assist like you used to be able to...

It's not hard to do 400K meterless, and Phoenix Rage is pretty nasty for DHCs. If you're saving meter for Dark, TAC away without fear!

Of course health is a factor in assist choices. That's why some of the best assists are paired with characters who have low health (Akuma, RR, Strider, Arthur, Sentinel).

That's why I said "technically" it's one of the best assists because if her health was that of a 750K character people would use her more for that assist. An assist character with 325K or whatever health is just ridiculous, she will die from a stray special move.

M gun OTGs at ranges that the cr.H doesn't, meaning at further distances. Off of a wall bounce from Magnum at long range, you can OTG with the M gun.

Oh dear God no. Not yet at least. :lol

Point Jean is reserved for years from now when [Floe Voice]I understand[/Floe Voice] the game completely. I'm just saying that the character is really fucking fun and having a moment to myself to indulge in my scrubbery. :p

On another note, anybody have any good Strider BnBs that are good for a newbie who's afraid to approach with him? I know he has great tools and anchoring him with 3 meters is always grounds for fun stuff, but I just can't beat my demon in Dark Vergil with Strider. Out of all three characters I play, I feel the most uncertain (and thus play the worst) when Strider is the last one out. I'd at least feel a little better if I wasn't scrambling to convert into magic series off of a high/low L.

The only Strider combo I know is the basic magic series, delayed air series into Formation B OTG relaunch combo.

Approaching with Strider is ALL about the animals. Have you seen the FlyingVe Formation Tech video? It's a good place to start. Approach from the ground with the Tiger while also setting up a mix up. Always have a Formation B summoned up, it's like having a Buster charged up. Essentially if you play properly with Strider there shouldn't be a point where you aren't pressuring your opponents with constant mix ups.

Dark Vergil is one of the strongest anchors in the game about on par with Dark Strider only Vergil is also one of the very few characters who actually keeps Dark Strider at bay thanks to Spiral Swords. He is basically a 1 on 1 specialist with meter. Best way to deal with Dark Vergil is to snap him in... seriously his options against snaps are crap. You can also X factor guard cancel against his Helm Breaker which he is bound to do a lot. Against Spiral Swords the best thing you can do is force yourself into blocking it sort of like how you would force yourself into Stalking Flare to minimize the time it's on the screen. Vergil has no real high low, down/back is great against him but be wary of those frequent right/lefts. Lastly if you have a good invincible CC on your team, it generally is extremely good against Vergil because a well timed CC will cause Vergil to whiff an attack and we all know what happens when the V man whiffs moves.

With formation b already summoned, anywhere but really close to the corner, I do:

m, h, fwd.h, srk.l, reverse qcb.s to launch formation B, wall cling. (on the wall) l, h, srk.h (while still in the air), wait a moment and then dash fwd, s, j.m, j.m, double jump fwd, j.h, j.s, land, legion. It does about 550k depending on the size of the character.

If you can't kill, I would omit the hyper at the end and go for a mix-up. Also, you can do ragnarok right after the wall bounce after the wall cling sequence to do 750k or something like that. Probably not a good idea unless it'll
end the match right there though.

That flyingVE video is something I really didn't integrate enough of into my game plan. I mostly jumped on with a basic application of it using Frantic's older video on Strider's basic resets using Tiger. On another note, I knew there was something else I was supposed to be doing when hitting that Excalibur L during the air magic series for more damage. Thanks, back to the lab again for me.

One thing I do see an issue with is I never have a Form S ready for the jump. I think that has more to do with how prolonged a neutral game can go on before I make a hit and my inability to get something started before Formation S rocket bails out on me. I think I'm gonna have to play around with this some.

Meanwhile, I've finally got some timings down on the traditional Ammy reflector BnB and I'm seeing myself hit more often using L after the Thunder Edge L in her standard glaive BnB. Now to make it convert into a full combo instead of halves of a combo. :lol

Easiest Strider combo ever = s.LMH, cr.H, f.H, Gram L, Legion. It's basically the "I'm feeling lazy so let me just get my damage in" combo. I usually do it if a character is at like 30-40%, since it does 410-450k depending on how many animals hit and will generally kill off anyone at that level of health. Can also lead to a jump loop if you XFC it, which can lead to 800k(XF1)/1m(XF2)/1.2m(XF3).

And what Dahbomb said is pretty much right. Animal projectiles are your friends, and Formation B is your BFF. Liberal usage of Excalibur L is also recommended. It's basically a dive kick that you can cancel any air normal into, making it really nice. Can set up nice fuzzy guards, and it's really hard to punish and pushblock.

Although I still have much to learn, I already saw results with this little bit of Strider approach stuff you all shared with me. I still have to get used to not calling animals out of blocks though since I find myself teleporting which usually ends with not so optimal results. I also feel a little bit more comfortable with Dark Vergil after this all.

Slowly but surely, it's all coming to me. I love when I get a moment to readjust my strategies and see the effects when I put some time into characters.

Yeah, matchmaking is still pretty broken like it was in vanilla. I always just go into training mode and turn on fight request.

A Pretty Panda

fuckin' called it, man
I think it might be on a case by case basis. I have had no problems in either Vanilla or Ultimate here on PS3. When ever I'd go over to a friends house who was on 360 the match making was horrendous and took forever. Even when I went into training mode and turned fight request on I'd have to wait upwards of 15 minutes to -not- have a match. This even happened on day like 2 of Vanilla and I know people were playing online then.

I used to think it was a 360 thing but since Jetman seems to be having problems I guess not.

Guess I just have to use fight request and lobby mode then. It's gonna take me a while to get good at this game, especially when I bought SFxT a few days ago.

"A while" might be understating it a bit. I've been playing over a year (since vanilla Marvel) and still feel like I have sooooo much to learn before I can consider myself good. Granted, this game could essentially be considered my entry into the fighting genre.

If you're not using fight request, make sure to use Quick Match when searching for games. The search filters aren't applied very intelligently. (If you search Any rank, you won't get paired with people searching for Same rank, even if the two of you have the same rank.) Quick Match circumvents this, and since Ultimate lets you see the opponent's connection strength before starting the match, you can just back out before the match starts if you don't feel like playing on a 2-bar connection or whatever.

Didn't you also just buy SF4 too? You're kinda spreading yourself out thin if that's indeed the case man.

Find which one is clicking more and use that as your foundation for learning, and to be honest UMvC3 isn't the hardest when it comes to execution when compared to games like SF4/SFxT that rely on heavy links.

Probably why I like UMvC3 as much as I do is because I don't have to worry about execution much, and can just focus on everything else the game has to offer to come out on top.

Nope just SFxT, I got SF4 when it came out.

I expect the game to be easier to learn than SFxT, because everything is chained rather than linked(and SFxT is easier to learn than SF4 since it's a mixture of the two) Is there a list of GAF PSN names anywhere? Willing to get my ass kicked to get some experience.

Apparently Gloria from DMC.

I've been playing a lot recently and plan on continuing to do so for a while. I'm out of town, but will be back home this weekend. Always willing to play and I have a bluetooth headset. PSN: GatorEsq.

What's up with Trish and her Lady Gaga outfit?
In DMC4, Trish disguises herself as Gloria to infiltrate the Order and gain their trust. It was a one off thing and it's a nice homage to the character. Gloria does look a lot like Gaga although the similarities are coincidental as DMC4 was released before the song Poker Face was released (when Gaga hit it big time).

In other news, the Devil May Cry HD collection release is almost upon us. All you heathens who didn't get to experience the greatness of the original DMC and DMC3SE will have a chance to do so. To get you guys up to speed, me and a few other DMC vets at GAF will be making an OT dedicated to the event covering some of the more intricate aspect of the game that we have learned over the years.

You will get to experience the joy, the sadness and joy again of the series like your forefathers before you. Probably the best thing to come out for the series in the wake of the crap fest that is going to be DmC (the small "m" differentiates it from the main series).

Back on topic: MarlinPie has claimed on Twitter that he has "broken" UMVC3 by discovering a tech with Doom + Ammy that guarantees him the match win if a character dies in the corner. Sounds like the guard break/guard tech glitch optimized to kill characters.

The op talks of some gaf voice chatroom you can join, is it still up?

Right now I'm thinking of using Vergil, Wesker, and either Dormammu, phoenix, or Ironman. Which would be the better pick?

you know i've yet to fight a cosmic lord or mighty lord. its like they are never on. i figured now that i'm at high lord rank i would get matched up with the higher ranks but i guess they are not on when i'm on.

Iron Man 100%. Vergil with Phoenix (I am assuming Jean) is garbage as both need the meter, Dorm doesn't add much to both Vergil/Wesker combo. Iron Man gives both characters the valuable beam assist that they need. It's a tried and true combination... it's one of my used teams in the game.

Dieminion posted on Twitter that he got a 360 plus AE, UMVC3, SFxTekken and KOF13. It's over now.

Are you gonna make a pheonix team or a vergil team? they both need meter so you cant have both.

Wesker/VErgil/ironman could work so could Wesker/ironman/pheonix or wesker/dormmamu/pheonix or dormammu/vergil/wesker something like that
