Ultra Late to the Party:Metroid Prime (OMFG Game ROOZ!!1)

Believe it or not, I have been sitting on an unwrapped copy of Metroid Prime for over a year now....there have been a million other things going on in my life and I never got a chance to play the game myself...

So I just bought MP2:Echoes yesterday and I told myself I wouldn't play it until I gave MP a good playthrough...

This is the most beautiful game I have ever seen!!!

I am not lying...there is a level of detail to every texture, 3D model, every room.....EVERYTHING you see, is totally unique.....sure didn't expect that.....

I cannot even imagine how much work it took to take the time to model and texture all that crap....I mean it must have taken ages just to do a single room with the amount of detail Retro installed in MP but every time I went around a corner, my breath was taken away by the sheer beauty and uniqueness of every room...

I mean, this game just has a CRAZY amount of detal and polish to it....even the sounds of your scaning visor and the wonderfull music and sound effects and the overall unique futuristic look....there isn't any 3D game like this (other than MP2, of course) that I have ever seen...

I would consider this one of the MUST PLAY games of this generation....if you don't get to play this game, you are missing out.....wonderful, wonderful game....

So....how the hell did Retro do it anyway.....I would think it would take years and years and years to get all the details and level of polish shown in metroid prime, but I don't think it was an unusually long development process, was it???

Maybe 2 to 2 1/2 years at the most just like scores of other inferior games out there....

Retro doesn't have dozens of animators, modelists and artists and a team of 100+ as seen with the Gran Turismos or the Final Fantasies out there, do they??

Was this game done by a large team??

Sure seems like an ENORMOUS amount of blood, sweat and tears went into the development of it....

Going to buy RE4 and see how it holds up against this masterpiece....Halo and Halo 2 most certainly do not, *IN MY VIEW*

Nice to hear ya love the game like practically everyone else.. :)

It is an awesome game, and yeah, I've been sitting on Echoes since..well.. Christmas.. and it'll be put off longer when RE4 arrives tomorrow..

The thing that impresses me the most about Halo (and is *IS* an impressive and awesome game) is that it is a very intutitve and FUN game to play....the atmostphere in Halo is great, but this is the next level IMO...

Yes, they are 2 totally different playing games (about as diffent as two game with first person viewpoints can be) but the graphical polish of MP just isn't there in Halo, IMO....

Yes, Halo has bump mapped textures and per-pixel lighting and looks wonderful....but the *craftmanship* of the visuals in metroid prime are just peerless,IMO....

It almost seems to me that the each room in MP comes across as a "birthing" process, if you get what I mean.....a lot of pain, but just as much love was put each rooms creation and I get the feeling that each one is cherished by its creator as the last and the next...

I don't know if what I am trying to say is coming accross properly, but that is the best way I can put it :)

Hmmm...

Not very far..

I got the morph ball, missles and charge beam....

I have exposed the third group of those honeycomb level thingies, so I think I am only about 2-3hrs in....

Good to know you like it this much already. You'll find yourself completely in awe by
Thardus
. You'll be neck deep in immersion by the time you find your way to the
Underwater Frigate
and by the time you emerge in
Tallon Overworld South.

You're not even up to the best part yet then. And I mean it's the best part, in every way. Best music, environment, art, atmosphere and boss.

Gaming doesn't get any better than that area*

*hasn't played RE4 yet

Or MGS3. :)

To hear that I haven't even seen the best of Metroid Prime yet doesn't surprise me...

To witness such beauty so early in a game *does* surprise me, however....

Oh, and I love MGS3 too :)

So many masterpieces, so little time :(

The team is like 50 people iirc, used to be a hundred but after the "spangenmess", it turned into 50 or so.

Its just that they have a very talented team.

Prime is definitely my pick for the "how the hell?!" game of this generation. Everything--EVERYTHING--was set up for it to be a huge disappointment... beloved franchise, moving into 3D, changing to first person, rookie game from a troubled studio. And when it finally comes out, it's not just competent, it's beautiful and engrossing and has tons of great little touches. I went from "There's no way in hell this is going to be good enough" to "'Super Metroid in 3D' doesn't do this justice". So... yeah. How the hell?! :D

I wonder how they go about setting up each area in the game. There isn't much lost from concept to game in terms of design and art. Is each room drawn out and then transferred or is it's basic shape put in and then just loads of detail added? The geometry is organic and dynamic, so it wouldn't seem like they just throw stuff onto a basic room and repeat.

They build all the rooms first in a very basic way (just blue polygons or something like that). In fact, they build it room by room as you would go through the game playing it, rather than bulding later bits before earlier bits. Then when they're happy they hand it over to the artists to work on.

Retro explained the process in a recent interview about Echoes. Basicaally, they come up with the basic geometry of the room, make sure it works for the intended gameplay and then hand the room off to the artists. From there the artists get free reign as long as the room keeps it's basic shape.

I think the best part of MP1 level design (and MP2 even moreso) is how every room is not only fit for the first time linear go through, but also is suited for 2nd or 3rd time backtracking for extra's. Everything seems staight forward when you get to it, but you will always notice something that will stick in your mind that says "remember this room and come back when I have *insert item*". They did a fantastic job in that respect and an even better job in MP2 IMO.

What's with people saying Halo is superior to Halo 2?
Nostalgia :D I don't know. I just finished Halo 2 for the first time last week (took me long enough), and I'd say I enjoyed Halo 1 more than Halo 2. It's not that Halo 2 is worse, it's just that it's more of a "been there, done that" type thing.

I think that's why everyone is enjoying RE4, because it has a new Wow factor that Halo 2 was missing (if you played Halo 1). I just started playing it tonight and I'm loving it so far.

Back on topic, MP was a great game. I've completed it 3 times, and will play it one more time before I get MP2 (when it drops in price... I spent my $ on RE4 and Halo 2 already :) )

Prime 1 is an amazing experience.. visually, gameplay-wise and soundwise

the sequel was a bit of a letdown for me though.. still a great game.. wouldn´t mind more of the same, but the dark world and the music was very uninspired..

overall still 9/10.. but not 10/10 :)

I never finished the game (couldn't beat the last boss). All the same it is one of the best games I've ever played.

Oh my god Prime... where do I begin?

The best thing in MP's GFX is that it doesn't need bumpmapping. When games like Halo, Riddick or Far Cry use bumpmapping to "fake" 3D surfaces or cracks in walls Prime does the same but entirely in 3D. If you see a crack in wall you can bet it is real geometry, real polygons. The amount of detail in Prime is just amazing. From the reflection of Samus' eyes on the helmet to the real-time physcis. Yup, I wonder who else noticed that? Prime got physics!!! Space Pirates slide down the slopes, ragdoll over rails and tubes it's all there not precalculated.

Prime is about exploring beatiful enviroments. When I saw for the first time Phenandra Drifts... heard its absoultely amazing background music I know I was in gaming heaven.

Boss battles?

From the
mighty Thardus
through
shock & awe Omega Pirate
to
motherfuckingly hard Ridley
- you won't be bored.

And the final boss battle is a piece of art on its own.

Which one...
Ridley or Prime
?

Prime. I thought I beat him once then he came back as a ghost
I also have the PAL version of the game and that is supposed to be as hard as 'hard mode' in the NTSC version.

it's pretty awesome the first time through, but really doesn't hold up well to repeated playthroughs IMO. it gets too slow and you start to notice that it isn't paced very evenly (you basically get a pretty fast first quarter with 2 good boss fights, then a long middle with no good boss fights, then a faster final quarter with a lot of good boss fights and areas).

it still isn't as slow paced as MP2 is (again, IMO) but I actually found MP2 to be the better game just because it was more polished.

I've barely played MP2 yet. It's just lying there, I'm not even up to the first main boss.

I don't much like the Dark World at the moment and the first environment has me bored. What really got me though was the first mini-boss fight I faced.
Unless fighting that Ing Dark World creature was before it. Anyway, it's the one with the large Ing infested worm/centipede thing in a circular arena. The boss isn't that hard, it didn't hit me much, but it just took soooo many hits to kill. It took me so long to beat the stupid thing even though it wasn't doing anything different and I wasn't getting hit much just because it's health was so high. Bored me to tears.

I'll try and get into it again soon, though I don't remember what Ii'm supposed to be doing next so it's a bit daunting, but right now I'm too focused on RE4 to give it the time of day.

Dude, you are obviously doing somthing wrong, that boss is a total push-over, even on hard.
MP is an amazing game, some of the bset level designs and boss battles this gen (fighting
ridley
is fucking awesome, my favorite boss battle in the game).
MP2 is awesome as well. As much as I loved MP, I could't make my self play through it again, and right now im about to finish Echos again on hard.
Retro is awesome, awesome is Retro.

Well like I said, it was easy as hell, it just took forever. I was just sitting there thinking "If I can hit the boss the first 5 times it goes past me with barely a scrape, I promise you game, I can beat it. Come on, just let me past." But it wouldn't reason so I had to keep on going. I fired and hit with all but one of my missiles, I tried charged shots, I tried just blasting away...took forever.

Don't see why the bastards had to make it harder than MP anyway. I'm not the best gamer in the world and struggled through sections of Prime. If they're going to do difficulty levels anyway, just open the fucking things up from the start and let everyone enjoy the game the way they want to.

Metroid prime is a good game but I think it’s the epitome of overrated, Nintendo have released much better offerings this gen. IMO!

I hate the controls (holding L to strafe, and you can't even turn while you do it, and locking on) and I don't really enjoy the backtracking either. The bosses however, are brilliant, and remind me of the old days. I'm glad I don't have a Gamecube though.

I ran up so much time on the clock on Metroid Prime just by looking at details of the landscape and playing with the physics engine--dropping the morph ball off ledges and things like that. That game was made with so much love.

I just finished Prime 2 tonight. I probably didn't enjoy the game as much as Prime 1 because it wasn't as "fresh" I guess. I liked the enviroments in the first game better too even if they were very "generic". Not in their layout or design, just the themes (lava, snow, rain, etc)

I remember really enjoying Prime 1's bosses but Prime 2's bosses are far far better overall. There's sooo many more and a lot that require you to be in Morph Ball to fight them. Very cool :) Bosses were generaly tougher too.

The one thing about Prime 2 that's better then Prime 1 is the total satisfaction you have when you finally aquire all the power ups. The screw attack is just awesome and enables you to get through the levels so much quicker. Plus the "search for the 9 keys" hunt at the end was incredibly straight forward and not frustrating like finding the stuff at the end of the game in Prime 1.

I've never enjoyed fighting enemies in the Prime games. The bosses are incredibly good fun but the basic enemies are just tiresome.

Me too. Except that it IS the best game I've ever played. I came to that opinion about 10 minutes into it as well. Absolutely amazing game.

Ohhhh you're talking about
Chykka
aren't you? lol I thought you were talking about the first boss, sorry man my bad (: . It does take too much time to finish him off, especially the first time I fought him. But the second time it seemed shorter, he really is easy, even on hard.

I was also amazed, even the even the ultra small save stations are so detailed it must have taken weeks just modelling and texturing the tinyest of details. MP is truly a work of art they should a museum exhibit, I'll even say its art surpasses its gameplay.

I know I wouldnt want to be an artist at retro, with amount of effort and detail they put in. I think those guys work 24/7 or something, their work ethic must be crazy.

Do you need to turn and strafe when playing Zelda? or anyother adventure

I liked it alot better than it's sequel. It had great level design, graphics, bosses, music...the whole works basically. The controls were really good too.

I hope RE4 slays the review scores for this game. That way...when someone in the room brings up the highest rated game someone else in the room might agree with them and actually like it. Over-rated.

I loved it, up to the part where there were too many resistent space pirates. That part was more annoying than anything else.

Great, thanks. Now I have to go play Metroid Prime again. Don't you people know that I don't have time for this shit?

(oh, and glad you're enjoying it)
