Ultra Late to the Party:Metroid Prime (OMFG Game ROOZ!!1)

Let me just say Im not too much of a FPS player myself. Just never really got into de genere.

I really liked Prime because it played different from previous FPS I played and it was a game from a franchise I love.

But I have to say That ECHOES really hooked me up A LOT more. The atmosphere in MP2 is IMO x5 times better, the game is way more engaging and I think that the basic flow of the game just seems more *together* for some reason. Not to mention that the graphic engine is really superior and the organic feel of every sector of Aether is more apparent.

Really, if you liked MP I believe there is a great chance you will enjoy Echoes much more. And as far as the tought and attention to detail, trust me, MP2 is just leaps and bounces ahead of the first game, so much so that Im still baffled of its accomplishments and complexity.

The thing that impresses me the most about Halo (and is *IS* an impressive and awesome game) is that it is a very intutitve and FUN game to play....the atmostphere in Halo is great, but this is the next level IMO...

Yes, they are 2 totally different playing games (about as diffent as two game with first person viewpoints can be) but the graphical polish of MP just isn't there in Halo, IMO....

Yes, Halo has bump mapped textures and per-pixel lighting and looks wonderful....but the *craftmanship* of the visuals in metroid prime are just peerless,IMO....

It almost seems to me that the each room in MP comes across as a "birthing" process, if you get what I mean.....a lot of pain, but just as much love was put each rooms creation and I get the feeling that each one is cherished by its creator as the last and the next...

I don't know if what I am trying to say is coming accross properly, but that is the best way I can put it :)

A man of my own heart. I never could understand why Metroid Prime has so many haters. It truely is a masterpiece and deserves so much more recognition. The sales of Echoes will probably make a tear fall down my face. All this because Nintendo's image is viewed as kiddy. So sad. Halo's don't hold a candle IMO. They are both good games, but I've been there done that a million times before. Especially on my PC. Metroid Prime is a unique and godly exercise in pure gaming perfection.

btw- I agree with the last poster. Echoes is even more amazing then PRime if you can believe it.

Metroid Prime gets so many haters because it really IS all about immersion and level design. Some people need good gameplay mechanics to get into games such as this (and that's assuming they like a scifi setting), and as far as gameplay goes MP does not deliver.

Not to say I don't like the game. I do. It's awesome for what it is.

I'm glad you like Metroid Prime. Echoes is equally as great. Retro Studios is really filled with some of the most talented artist in the entire industry.

In case you are interested, you can read these two articles I wrote for N-Sider that appeared on IGNcube not to long ago. Both articles feature interviews with several former artists and programmers from Retro Studios. If you really like to know how much work went into the making of Prime's graphics and artistic vision, then "The Art of Prime" is a must read.

I think what you mean is the TYPE of gameplay mechanics, I can see some people not getting into this type of game if they were expecting it to be a standard run and gun FPS. However, the gameplay it does sport, it delivers in spades, and I actually very much prefer it to the standard twitch shooter. To say it doesn't deliver in the gameplay department is just ....wrong...

You running this in progressive Klee? I know when I first played the game on a monitor via Xblaster, I was shocked to see Samus' reflection in the visor when I let off a bunch of blasts. I noticed a lot of little details after that.

Metroid Prime and Echoes are two of the best games this generation, heck, of all time.

The visuals are beautiful, the worlds are done so well I often found myself looking over the canyons in MP2:E and going 'Wow, I wonder what it's like down there. Is it a jungle?' Retro has done an amazing job in making the player become part of the game. For that, I cannot think of another recent game that has done that.

Gameplay is solid, as I'm a big Metroid fan, and I have no complaints at all.

I hope Retro can work on the next Metroid title as well as something original. I want to see their full talent potential unleashed.

I say this because enemy encounters are very bland. I almost wish there were no standard enemy encounters in the game, just boss fights. This is partly due to the AI, but mainly the control setup. While you can skip a lot of the fights, there are sections of the game (other than boss battles) where you have to fight. The Phazon Mines in particular is very annoying due to the heavy encounter rate.

Back TRacking and REspwaning killed the game for me once the initial effect of the atmosphere wore off.

backtracking is METROID

respawning enemies is METROID

go play a FPS. bye!

I've enjoyed MP2 more than Prime myself as well. It's a bit more guided, and less intertwined. Don't get me wrong, Prime did the whole "everything is one massive world" thing better than anyone, but at times it was just overwhelming for me. Also, the bosses are so much more intelligent. You really have to strategize to get some of these guys, and unlike just shooting them...each boss is a puzzle within itself. Both games are true masterpeices, and are one of a kind in a very flooded market.

I just finished Echoes.

And yeah, I loved Prime more, but only because it was such a great/new experience.

Not to say that I didn't enjoy Echoes, its level design always makes me wonder how the hell did they actually start...

MP is a modern classic ... masterpiece ... legend ...
A god among mortal games... err...

We're lucky this generation that Retro graced our presence with its new installment to the Metroid mythos...

on the down side.. I've completely lost interest in echos 15 hours in : ( help me get back into it...

No, but I'd like for them to make clearing out respawning enemies as you progress through the game easier, like in the 2d metroids. It could be done if they'd just follow another 2d metroid tradition and have the beam upgrades combine with the main beam.

I personally enjoyed MP2 more than MP 1. The environments are just so cool. MP has some cool environments as well, but I love all of the environments in MP2.

Backtracking and respawning kind of go hand in hand. Metroid games, especially the Prime ones pride themselves on having huge worlds that have tons of areas and rooms you aren't able to enter. You see the yellow colored door, but you don't have the means to get in it. So later on in the game you get that upgrade, and now all the little areas you couldn't reach before flash inside your in head. You then backtrack to go to all these places you were before. I truthfully couldn't imagine going all the way through this world just jumping from one place to the next. Its boring..and more teduis this way. I agree, respawning enemies are often a pain in the ass, especially the tough ones... but if they weren't there it wouldn't be any better. It's the price you pay for having non-linear gameplay elements. Theres are only a few moments where serious backtracking is required. All other minor backtracking is optional and mainly for missle upgrades. In MP2 some of the backtracking required for getting upgrades and such is genius, the puzzels are well worth the trek over there.
