Ultra Street Fighter IV |OT| What is old is new once again

I really need some help in the Makoto v Rolento matchup. Rolento kicks the crap out of me.

Makoto does well vs him, just gotta go ham. Rolento has no wake-up options without ultra, and you can react to his ex corner escape. All his rolls are punishable so don't let him roll around. His pogo into jump normal is punishable in neutral, if you react fast enough you can even dp it for huge damage.

Watch out for his jump as none of Makotos normals beat his j.hp 100% of the time. If you can, try to M DP his jump or air to air if close, but c.mk is still decent if you react late. He can out zone you with his pokes, but all you need is 1 knockdown then you can go hamtaro. I find him hard to whiff punish so I mostly buffer s.mp\c.mp into ex dp or hayates to get in.

Don't let him scare you because his offense isn't too scary, but he is sure as shit scared of Makotos offense.

This is probably not thread for it but I'll post it anyways. Sometimes when you play USF4 you hit that dry spell where you just can't get a win today it was just one of those days. So I was like fuck it let me try 3rd strike lol despite not having played in ages I did pretty well, funny how the SF gods work at times.

While we're posting videos... this is what happens when you enter Evo on a lark despite having never played Ultra at all and only having touched Super for a few minutes at most: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BxopkR4l68c

Still debating if I want to get back into this game, but I was always the punching bag of the group back when local friends used to play this and I doubt I want to reactivate my long-dormant Xbox Live account for this... do a lot of people play on PS3 or PC?

You better off playing the x360 version the game runs better plus the community is pretty healthy/competitive , don't get discouraged keep playing! Streaks go either way lots of winning or lots of losing. When I feel burned out I go to 3rd strike it helps me.. Weird I know lol

The money I used to have set aside for Live Gold goes to PS+ these days and I don't think I'm going to be signing up for a subscription service just for the sake of one game, sorry.

True I respect that, my x360 is my regulated fighting game/3rd party machine nowadays so that's why it's justifiable on my end. My ps3 is for exclusives and KH FM's games xD

But does x360 have Vanilla Sagat?

It really depends on what your situation is. While in EU the PS3 community is still healthy, afaik in the US the 360 would be without a doubt the preferred console option. In general all of the competitive players are playing on x360 due to the input lag on the PS3 and supposedly worse netcode/infrastructure.

The PC has a lot of cool stage/costume mods and tools like the Hitbox viewer. Also while GFWL has been removed. The Steam integration has been so-so with people saying it's worse than GFWL. Right now the PC community seems to have cooled down since USF4 still hasn't been released, yet. So if you're not sure you might as well wait for the retail/PC release and see how it goes from there.

In other news I have added some Beginner's resource material in the discussion forum of Scrubgaf. If anyone has something to add feel free to post in it and I'll add it to the OP. Also since while it's called USF4scrubgaf it's still supposed to be a FG beginners place so material to other games like KoF13 are also welcome.

Vanilla sagat well played well played Gaf-brethen lol, I want to learn to play kof13 but the execution barrier it's a bit beyond my capabilities

I KoF13 execution barrier seems overblown. In general, I'd agree if you mean the challenges, but as always with the majority of the FG challenges those are not really viable combos. While HD combos look difficult they're just specials canceled into specials and are comboed from hit confirm with, in majority of the time, c. lk. Of course, there are exceptions like Duo Lon's/Joe stun combos or drunk Hwa Jai stuff.

Hit confirming combos in KoF13 is in general pretty close to SF4, so that's something you can take with you.

KOF13's execution is wayyyy easier than SFIV's imho

What's really hard in KOF13 is your execution when it comes to movement, not combos.

I disagree with this soooo much. I consider myself to have decent execution, I can usually complete 80% of a trial mode and can do almost anything with enough grinding. I'm having a really hard time completing even 20% of the KOF 13 trials. I also noticed that timing basic combos is REALLY tight. Even something like jump in - cr. mk - fireball is more precise and tight than SF4. Or there are some combos that require you to link cr. lk and then DF mk into something. Heck, even Kyo's super move is tricky on a d-pad. The tightness in KOF to me feels like 3rd Strike, another game where timing is retarded.

Execution in SF4 is probably a 5-7/10, while I consider KOF to be a 9-10. I think its ridiculously hard. And easier game would be Injustice, for example.

SFIV needs timing. While KoF13 needs nimble hands for the constant inputs of specials and maybe some timing for juggles. I have to agree though KoF13 has a lot more jumping options than SFIV and the super hop is probably the reason I don't like the game that much, since I have issues to do it reliably.

No. With plinking, SF4 execution is very easy. Theres exceptions of course, but back linking or decent practice time solves that. SF4 also doesn't require good right hand execution.

There are just a few characters in SF4--Viper, Fuerte, for example--that make the execution tougher. And there are some one-frame links that are tough. Still though, everything seems do-able with enough grinding. KOF 13 is just really hard immediately.

KOF trials dont mean anything in the grand scheme of things though. Maybe it's because I play EX kyo, EX Iori, and Terry, but their execution is piss easy compared to any character I've played in SFIV. Only thing I found difficult when it came to combos in KOF were timings for links after a jumpin as it feels more like 3S. It's not that hard to get used to it either, unless you play a character with slower normals like K'.

Whaaaa? 3rd Strike has super easy execution. In fact I can't think of another game that has easier execution. Combos are really short and you can be super sloppy.

KOF up until 11 had some hard as fuck execution.

And I find Injustice extremely difficult. I think it's because I don't fully understand the system though.

i should really practice the s.strong and c.forward into shoulder punish and OSing your wakeup upkicks. i think im getting more of the neutral game down against yun but once he's in ... party time :[

Yeah, I'm at the panel, and posted details in the fighting game thread. Suppose I should be posting here instead.

"Summer Vacation" DLC coming to Ultra. Scuba gear Rufus, summer dress Elena, China dress Poison, golf club Dan, bikini Decapre, prep school Dudley, Hawaiian Blanka, and more.

Nice! Me, too.

Good to see the title code was posted too.

Where you at shidoshi?

Right behind and to the right of the guy asking the question about the movie. *heh*

China Dress Poison? Finally a good costume =O

It looks like a good costume, but why on Poison? Seems a weird fit, and I'd rather see her in a move "cool/badass" summer outfit. Maybe like a Japanese street punk outfit. *heh*

Hugobros, what should I be doing in the Seth matchup?

I don't know what happened to our connection El Sloth. We used to be able to play, could be bad routing now :(.
I think it's TWC throttling my connection. All my green bar matches today suddenly became lag fests at a certain point.

That or you left your porn torrents on!

Would have loved to say wassup, but got caught up in the photo madness at the front.

I asked Ono to buff dhalsim, but he just said, "Dhalsim??" And then he laughed maniacally in my face. :(

Edit: Dorgot to mention, Ono claims to have news to drop next year.

Got me an Hori arcade stick used off of Ebay cheap and the square gate is fucking discouraging, can't do a shoryuken from the player 1 side to save my fucking life, can do it from p2 side with no problems, I am used to circle gate I am modding this shit Asap...fucking pile of shit square gate..

Uh, what? Tap forward, then hit down then bury stick in corner.

Basic Hugo advice cuz he's pretty frail: stay close and smack him around. ;-)

I think FP Elbow will take care of his stretchy limbs if he's sticking em out for you. That's all I got! Try mixing up normals into Meat Squasher--this is annoying because of the input issue but really keeps pressure on. Was watching an awesome Hugo vs Hugo marathon between Jibbo and some dude called I am Weaponer (something like that), and the mix-ups with Meat Squashers reminded me of 3rd Strike stuff. Try and watch that match, its like 2 separate videos about 15 minutes each. Dude's just go at it, Man Mountain style. Jibbo wins most of the matches, but that Weaponer guy is no joke. Couple of Standing Gigas too!

I think there are tradeoffs when it comes to determining the difficulty/ease of KOF 13 or SF4 combos. SF4's leniency come from p-linking and DI shortcuts (df d df is my personal favorite). There's a technique in KOF where you can easily buffer into specials by inputting the motion and holding down the buttons, and the move will come out on the first frame it accepts inputs, so timing isn't an issue. There's also some drive cancel perks that happen when you hold down two buttons but I think those are character specific. Also, there aren't too many 1-2f links in KOF that are viable compared to SF4.

Personally, for me the difficulty comes down to timing links in SF4, and being accurate with directional inputs in KOF. They're two different aspects so I can't really say which is harder to be consistent with.

For me, one frame links are just terrible. On the other hand, "old school" style KoF and 3rd Strike are like second nature. The timing and floatiness of SF4 still throw me off--I seem too wired for 2D fighters to adjust to the point where it ever feels natural.

I agree with 3rd strike having easier execution this is me playing granted I'm just average compared to SFgaf
