UMVC3: Phoenix Wright and Nova Revealed!

Seth was showing off the aegis reflector Urien shenanigans in his breakdown or at least trying to. So yes, Nova may be able to pull off some urien bullshit.

EDIT: Uhhhh.... Marvel has left right unblockables. Entire basis behind Logan's bersearker's slash setups.

I was under the impression that that was just hard to block.

When he's in the Courtroom Mode (the one symbolized by the attorney badge), he can present evidence with attack+S (L for first slot, M for second, H for third). Every piece of "good" evidence he presents will shoot a different type of projectile. So far we've seen:

- Knife: three way split shot
- Photograph: quicker straight shot
- Flower vase: a shot that arcs up and then back down
- Cell phone: two balls appear and stay in place momentarily, then fire toward the opponent, much like Dante's purple ball gun thing or maybe like Strange's discs

If he presents bad evidence or no evidence at all, he gets embarrassed and has a long recovery animation.

Those moves just seem less tied to the series than the rest of his arsenal. I love how they incorporated Maya, the evidence, his normals and level three hyper. It's like they had used up all their creativity once they got to the Courtroom stance: "Let's just turn his evidence into projectiles!"

You can block them. Not true unblockables like the low high unblockables. Just really hard to time the block correctly and requires you to guess which way they were going.

In the recent streams, these "unblockables" were getting blown up. A true unblockable is extremely rare. Means point char would have some way to attack at the same time from the front/back and/or high/low.

Marvel's high/low unblockables give you a frame to block both attacks. But it is really hard to do, and therefore called unblockable. It is not a true unblockable.

Edit: Beaten.

But yeah I doubt Nova's mini Aegis reflector will work like that. More likely it's a simple anti-zoning tool.
Yeah Nova's mini Aegis Reflector looks like it very, very limited uses in comparison to what I've seen from Urien play. It's more like a weak version of MODOK's shield that collapses in a single hit. I don't think we'll be seeing much of that. Doesn't even look that effective in combating zoning either IMO.

Seth was trying to perform it and did once but the guy blocked. The red health for the shield probably increases the time the shield is out.

But yes, the unblockable could be possible and who knows we may see it one day. But the shield to me will be used as placement to keep the opponent on the ground for Nova to dash in on point and then throw MODOK's shield out there as well.

Strictly speaking, MvC3 has no true left-right unblockables as it can only read one hit detection at a time. However, not even J Wong is able to block those countless Wolverine slashes, as KillerKai said on Devestation stream :"if he was able to block so many mixups I would have accussed him of having a block button". Nova being able to sandwich people into his min-Aegis shield would be impossible to block too without a block button, but from what I have seen his Aegis shield isn't that strong, doesn't last that long and I don't think Nova has the speed for that.

Going to be playing Phoenix Wright tomorrow at NYCC. Getting ready to lose as I fumble around trying to learn him!

And confusing it he's fighting against or alongside Phoenix

They can call him Nick.

Wait, the reflector consumes red health too?! I'm curious as to what properties change.

I dunno, I'm not feeling the hype. Does anyone have a link to a video where Seth demos the characters?

Nova looks rock solid mechanically and has a great theme but he really doesn't enthuse me. Like obviously he's not Iron Man but aesthetically/superficially he looks like a color-swapped Iron Man. Maybe he's somebody who has to grow on me? I'm also not feeling the Phoenix hype despite the Ace Attorney games being amongst my favorite games in the past few years. He feels a bit unfinished: Missing frames of animation, no voices (Maya), straight up anemic voices (Phoenix himself), terrible remixs (some of the worst I've ever heard for Objection and Cornered), etc.

I think the reason that left/right unblockables work in SF3 is because there's no autoblock at all. MvC3 definitely has autoblock, and once you're in blockstun you're not going to get pushed into something hitting another direction and take full damage.

The guys saying Wolverine has left/right unblockables, he doesn't. You're getting difficult mixed up with impossible.

I'd pay for DLC that gives me the old UI back.

It's that terrible.

Everything about Wright feels meh from a hype standpoint except his theme.

It's actually really epic in it's feel.

Trust me, when you see Combofiend beasting everyone with him, you'll feel the hype for Nova.

I want a full 3D, cell shaded Phoenix Wright adventure game for PS3/360 consoles.

Now please. Capcom you could have all my money! Think about it.

That's how I feel about Nova too, except I take that as a positive. Nova seems to be a really solid, balanced, all-around character, hence the lack of flash that we see from other characters. Like what other people have said, I think he will shine in competition

There is no such thing as a right/left unblockable that I know of in MVC3. B Slash is just going to hit you either right or left depending on what range he picked and where the opponent is in relation to him.

I sort of had to go somewhere so I missed all of S-Kill's breakdown. Watching that now plus Max's breakdown. Although I don't know why people are jizzing over Wright's 600K LVL3 when Vergil too has a 600K+ LVL3. Both have some sort of requirement they need to fulfill, Vergil needs to be in DT and Wright needs to get his stance/evidence.

My hype for Nova is close to reaching critical mass. He's the most BALLER character in Marvel roster (not to be confused with SWAGGEST character which Iron Man has on lockdown).

BTW, would you guys support Maya as a DLC? Since they already have made her model why not?

You'd be jizzing your pants over Vergil's level 3 even if five of the new characters had that kind of damage. I don't see why fans can't get excited about their character.

Nova is the most copied and pasted character revealed thus far and I love him because of that.

Definitely not one of the most exciting characters in the VS series and he is certainly not brimming with originality.

I like the health bars because they look really retro but they clash horribly with everything else on screen. I'm not sure what they were thinking.

I'm pretty sure they were designed with the Vita in mind especially the large pulsating "X" and they just wanted to keep as much the same as possible between the console and Vita versions.

Dah, do you have unique, extremely excited adjectives to describe every single one of the cast?

I jizzed over when it was "cool" or when it was new because back then no other character had a damage option like Vergil. For Wright it's like "oh 600K LVL3? Been there done that..."

Also Nova's absorb red life to get stronger is a unique mechanic in the game plus his own mini-Aegis Reflector (MODOK's works a bit different). I am dying to try that shit out. A lot of his Centurion Arts have special properties like wall bounce, OTG and crumple. He's a solid character with basically only 1 gimmick. And confirmed 8 way air dash YAY! I totally called that his Beam hyper would reach LVL3 hyper damage with enough red life lost.

If we are going to talk about original/non-original characters... the most non-original characters are Vergil and Akuma. But oh wait... they are or will be the most played characters in the game.

I have for some but not all. Like Haggar is the MANLIEST character in Marvel history. There is no adjective to describe the godliness of Vergil.

Nova seems solid but unremarkable, unless I'm missing something. I wouldn't have minded if his slot were filled by someone from MvC2 instead. Phoenix Wright is hilarious. I hope he turns out to be viable so that I can spend hours watching pros ROFLstomp everybody.

Nova is looking really solid and PW is looking like the hypest Marvel character of all time.

The new characters are seem like great additions to the roster from what we've seen so far. I'm a happy man

I just remembered that my concept Feenie had a Maya super like move, but it was awesomer since it had Gumshoe pushing the Blue Badger:

Edit: PW voice actor is Custom Male Voice 3 in SoulCalibur IV :P

I do.

I just realized that Nova hard counters Hawkeye really well.

Poison Arrow -> 150K worth of red life -> Nova's LVL1 charged up to LVL3

Good observation. Especially considering how little health Hawkeye has, he'll have to be careful how he uses poison arrows against Nova, if at all.

I wonder how many frames of invulnerability we are talking about here for his beast cannon hyper. This thing could be a beam and bionic arm killer. I see that as something pretty big too.

Now I'm all excited!

Also I don't think you can set up self unblockable right/left set ups with Nova's Gravimetric Pulse.

The way that right/left cross ups work in MVC3 is that you pretty much have to block in relation to the point character. So if Nova has the Pulse behind the opponent and is himself in front of the opponent, the opponent just has to block the Pulse "normally" by blocking in relation to Nova's placement. This is the same concept for assists as well where when the assist is behind you and the point character in front, you have to block the assist by blocking in the direction of attack of the point character.

The way I see how Gravimetric Pulse would work is that you finish off a character, throw out a Pulse and an Energy Javelin and go for a tri-jump cross up (or dive kick cross up). He will have to guess which side you end up on and he has to do it fast because of the Pulse/Javelin coming in too. It's like how beams + teleport characters work, the teleporter comes behind the opponent so fast that they can't block the beam fast enough in reverse direction. Even if Pulse holds them down for a couple seconds, that's huge because 2 seconds of mix up/lock down is godlike in MVC3.

Beast Cannon has quite a bunch of i-frames. Should be able to punish beam hyper users fairly easily. Full screen Bionic Arm but you have to control it apparently. I am OK with this.
