UMVC3: Phoenix Wright and Nova Revealed!

Nice video, Max.

I just noticed that dog running across the NYC stage at about five minutes and ten seconds. It actually hurt Nova when it ran past him. Is the dog something specific to the NYC stage or Haggar? :S

That would be one of Phoenix's assists.

Pheonix Wright's "get em, missile" assist.

i hope from here to release they touch up wright a bit

his VA sounds like some dude phoning it in

seriously, he didn't even get "TAKE THAT!" right

They really should have made Phoenix animate more in his level 3. It looks kind of cheap to see him talking without movement of the mouth.

Thanks for correction.

You should put Amaterasu on point, get your Reflector out, call Nova's reflector, and then call a third one (MODOK's?). REFLECTIN' IT UP!
Yeah, this is what I've been brainstorming about for a little while now. Seems like a great way to protect against spam while you shoot out beads and use Dark Harmonizer. I bet Morrigan could benefit greatly from the reflect as well.

Fruity Pebbles suck. It's all about the Cocoa Pebbles. Captain Crunch is definitely superior to Fruity Pebbles, though.
I like honey bunches of oats. :)

It's almost like it's a bad thing for Niitsuma to like the character...
It is a mystery.

meh

Phoenix is mainly fanservice, it'll be good to see what people come up with while playing him though. Nova looks solid!

"TAKE THIS!" His VA kind of fits but it feels off to me.
he sounds too calm

which is funny because he's fighting supermen and gods

and yeah his ultra combo looks half-done, i was also kinda expecting edgeworth/godot/whoever in the background making their defeat pose whenever wright goes "take that!"

OMG FEENIE REVEALED! *changes avatar*
(Heh, lttp as always).

His intro looks good, didn't expect Maya there. His normals are pretty nice too (I expected he'd just punch and kick before the rumors). The gavel super is awesome!
I really didn't expect the Ghost Trick reference (no one cares about AA's Missile). The sound effects are also a nice and unexpected touch.

But.. why so underwhelming :(?
His moves seem unnecessarily complicated and limited. I just wanted a spammable objection with a lot of crazy cameos in all of his specials. It's just that something feels off.
And it doesn't help that his level 3 looks awful and the music could've been better.

I blame the leaks. Before the game was officially announced I was barely having any hope for him to make it, now that I've had months of building expectations I'm bitching.
Still pretty excited to try him and still want to (will?) main him.
OBJECTING DAY ONE, BRING IT ON HATERS!

Also wow at the stage with poster :lol. The art is surprisingly amazing!

Edit: Also very bummed that Wright didn't get
3-5 ending
as a level 3 :(
Also I like the bits of Nova that makes him look like Captain Falcon lol. They should've change his beams color as not to appear as fire.

Sissel would've been a better pick though.
Yep, but not remotely as popular.
Actually while Phoenix was probably my favorite from the original trilogy (lol), I always thought Godot or Franziska would've been better fit as fighters. That way they would've been equally fan servicy while offering a more regular moveset.

JazzmanZ said:
hmm I guess that rules out Pink phoenix, maybe Godot instead? dunno what Mayas colors could be through.

Still... I wouldn't mind some sort of Monkey spirit monster. I'm pretty sure there Japanese legends that they could use for something like that.
You know that SonSon was based on Sun Wukong from the Chinese novel Journey to the West right?

Max you make it sound like you don't have PW/Nova in your build yet, is that true?

It's difficult talking about characters surface level information from trailers, when you're trying to keep things special for later videos...

Max, when do I get to inundate you with Firebrand questions? :-D

Yeah, this is what I've been brainstorming about for a little while now. Seems like a great way to protect against spam while you shoot out beads and use Dark Harmonizer. I bet Morrigan could benefit greatly from the reflect as well.
Sounds like a cool idea.

I like honey bunches of oats. :)
Also tasty! Though I don't eat cereal anymore.

I think we're hearing Confident Phoenix for most of his time in the fight, which is probably why he sounds like he does. I really like his confused "MAYA?!" when he calls her out, so I'd really like to hear this dude deliver some standard Phoenix Wright dialogue to find out how well he can really pull it off.

Also, I totally love the sound effect it makes when Maya hits dudes.

I really just don't understand the phoenix hype. I must have lost my sense of humor.
I'm sure there will be some funky combos discovered ala modok, but I wonder if he'll see similar playtime after the dust settles.

I take it Wright's level 3 is pretty much unavoidable and unblockable?

And to achieve Court Mode he has to make his Objection counter hit right?

Understood and respected.

Here are my thoughts on things now that I've managed to read all 20 pages of what I missed since going to work today.

PHOENIX WRIGHT THOUGHTS
Turnabout stance is going to be ridiculous. His supers, the damage, the level 3 otg 600k and the fact that at lvl 3 you can xfactor for another boost. Its good that its limited in time frame and puts you back into building your case but a hyper that insanely powerful on deck seems really REALLY dangerous in this game. I'm betting his main buddies will be wall assists like Dante or meter builders to allow for faster attempts at lvl 3.

Considering he has OTG and random stun on his normals plus a health boost from finding meat...I think Phoenix is going to remain a major member of teams with good keep away or just plain wall assists. He has me worried right now actually. Even his lvl 1 is designed to force them away from you so he can dig for more evidence. Right now I'm thinking Phoenix/Storm/Dante is the ultimate Phoenix team up for protecting him on evidence runs.

NOVA THOUGHTS

Nova looks like a character whose theme may well be based off of spending red meter TVC baroque style for boosts. In his case to boost move properties. This is an interesting way to create a LITERAL charge character, and can potentially create some pretty insane comebacks for him. However, I don't think this is a big deal to get into for a character since it requires getting hurt to utilize (though it may make him a superb anchor).

I think his main tool is his general ability to disregard keep away. He cuts through projectiles like crazy, and has some nice dashes and a few moves that look to auto activate flight mode like Firebrand to lead into some nice air combos that could go awhile for him. Not a ton of mixup chances for him, but he can create his own high lows, self OTG and crossups off his divekicks and hidden missile. His lows are NICE and go really far too.

I'm thinking his best team mates will be Strider and Iron Fist since Both have nice overhead assists. Strider would create mixups for him and lots of high lows off teleport kick and Iron fist could create this during block strings once he's up close with crescent kick. Best of all Iron Fist would likely benefit from Nova's anti-keep away moves as assists for his own setups. Iron Fist/?/Nova is something I expect to see soon.

Wright's level 3 is fullscreen like Magneto's Gravity Squeeze and it looks just as fast.

To get into Turnabout mode, you need 3 legit pieces of evidence, then hit either the opponent or their assist with the Objection bubble.

For Phoenix Wright, it's all about the MODOK Shield Barrier assist. You're invincible to anything but hypers if you stand inside that thing. Dig away!

Then, Wright NEEDS to hit you with "Objection!" to get his groove going. I think an assist like Hidden Missiles is perfect for him in that sense, and it lets him dig for evidence if you lose MODOK. Doom will be hard to punish behind Maya's shield barrier.

Or ...you know...they could jump over it or teleport like most folks do. Barrier is pretty easy to handle. Though you'll likely get at least one dig for evidence for the attempt...Strider/Wesker will eat it alive though and Storm/Magneto push\pull may very well drag you in front of the shield.

Just saying is all.

I'm not saying to stand behind it, but rather IN it. If you're standing inside the shield, any attacks with a hitbox that touch the shield are negated. It's really fucking annoying if a rushdown player knows how to use it well.

And remember that Storm and Magneto are vulnerable during their moves. It's not like they can pull me out and kill me just like that. If they try to move me within melee range I just hit them.

A Human Becoming said:
Oh so it's a knife. Why it would shoot projectiles doesn't make sense to me, but whatever. Good job Max.

When he's in the Courtroom Mode (the one symbolized by the attorney badge), he can present evidence with attack+S (L for first slot, M for second, H for third). Every piece of "good" evidence he presents will shoot a different type of projectile. So far we've seen:

- Knife: three way split shot
- Photograph: quicker straight shot
- Flower vase: a shot that arcs up and then back down
- Cell phone: two balls appear and stay in place momentarily, then fire toward the opponent, much like Dante's purple ball gun thing or maybe like Strange's discs

If he presents bad evidence or no evidence at all, he gets embarrassed and has a long recovery animation.

You tease you.

Watching the S-Kill demonstration now. I'm liking PW more by the second.

What the hell am I missing? Random stuns and random evidence draws. Multi-stance combined with evidence collecting. Horrible normals, insane recovery. It's like every bad character from a fighting game combined.
I feel like I'm taking crazy pills

Ahh so it's like Grabbity Squeeze then. Well that makes it fun.

I get the evidences, but didn't know Objection was a direct attack rather than a counter move. Nice.

Ookami-kun said:
Also, I wonder what's the point in discarding good evidences =/

Emergency projectile. Also, to get another good evidence that makes for better projectiles in courtroom stance. Saving them for the turnabout stance still sounds like the best idea though.

From S-Kill video:

Nova has mini Aegis reflector? Can someone inform me about some of the uses of the Aegis reflector and the implications of such in Marvel for someone who wasn't really into SFIII?

10-15 pieces of evidence with different specials? WOW. A loooooooooot of effort put into PW.

HOLY SHIT 600K DAMAGE FOR HIS LEVEL 3? WHAT? WHAT? WHAT? AND THAT'S AFTER TURNABOUT MODE RAPE? WTF. GOD DAMN BASED WRIGHT, YOU GOT BITCHES.

Perfect Screen....

thank-you-based-god.gif

Thank... thank you based Seth :')

Random stun is going to bring the salt, oh man. Not sure why that's necessary but the randomness of it all will definitely induce the bitching.

Phoenix is seeming really interesting, it appears they're offsetting his damage potential with some long, LONG recovery. I'm not sure if any other member of the cast is designed with this such principal, and certainly not with all the uniqueness.

Nova's 8-way airdash is really sexy with the slight curve in it's arc. His j.S reminds me of Vergil's too (the killer bee).

Overall Nova is looking really hot to me. Those Centurion arts are really hot, a lot of OTG potential and his diving centurion art crosses up too to give him some mix-up game. Even his flight mode looks sexy with all that energy pulsating everywhere through his chest.

I was admittedly a bit lukewarm on PW at first but now that I fully understand him, I'm stoked. Bring on November 15th. This is good, I'm liking every character so far except Nemesis. Only two more to go to aim for the 11/12! Stoked for Niitsuma interview on Sunday and of course the panel on Saturday.

Are you trying to predict his viability beforehand or what? If so, bad idea. If not, Phoenix is looking like a high risk character by design. His entire gameplay style is "run and hit," and massively assist-based, meaning he will be most often used as a point character. I think that's really interesting and would be quite fun regardless of how it all turns out in the end. 1.4 million damage or whatever combo from Seth Killian says he has potential, but we have next to no idea about how durable PW will be competitively because of the shifted state of rushdown vs. zoning in UMvC3 versus MvC3.

If you're still here Heathcliff please check to see if Shehulk's back+h lamppost can be cancelled into Runner's Start

it's all I have man

Has it been mentioned if there is any visual que to what amount of red health will be needed to level up Nova's hypers? From what i heard from Seth's gameplay vid it appears that the moves have 3 levels depending on the amount of red life you have, but I couldn't see if there was a hint to know what level you were at.

I wish we got the Gyakuten meets Orchestra version of Investigation.

Feels much more dynamic.

Damn, I think I need to buy AA3 on Wii now. Just finished playing through the second a month ago.

I think he probably will. I think him starting out so poorly and teleports gets him on evidence collection are problems. But you never know since rushdown has been nerf. But the get off me assists have also been nerfed.
