UMVC3: Phoenix Wright and Nova Revealed!

Isn't C Bake revealing some costumes today?

Calm yourself, impatient one - the color blogs have usually been created around this time of the day, usually even about an hour later. Just be patient. We will get them in time. If nothing else, we might get them tomorrow with the 2 gamespot characters.

The color reveals and now Max's Assist Me! vids have been making the wait a lot more bearable than it was for vanilla.

Still, after watching Season's Beating Velocity last night my mind melts thinking how UMVC3 is gonna take things to the next level.

Im going to mark out so bad if people do Pheonix Wright shenanigans in high level play.

Phoenix (Get 'em Missle)
Doom (Hidden Missiles)
Strider (Vajra)

...is one of the teams I've been working on for some time.

Do you think he has what it takes to stand up in tournies? Seems so, but a lot is predicated on him getting enough time to get evidence.

I think so, but having 2 effective assists will really help. Phoenix's big problem is he can't do squat against people who jump/super jump. Maya covers the ground, assists cover the air.

Can we start referring to Phoenix Wright as PW or, Wright or as his full name, or something besides just Phoenix? The whole two Phoenix's thing might get a bit confusing.

As for my team, I'm definitely going to be checking out PW and Strange, and seeing how they work out together. Maybe throw Hulk in there as well.

Cool. My thinking is PW/Strange/Doom. Doom's got the air and staggered lock downs, Strange with that double beam assist can probably keep horizontal coverage as good as anything.

Does anyone have the Marvel vs Capcom 3 Tournament Edition Stick? Is it much different than the MVC2 Tournament Edition Stick? Would you recommend it?

That one for all Heroes and Heralds stuff, this one for real discussion/complaining about reveals.
Mehhh. I really dislike bouncing back and forth between multiple threads when we end up inevitably talking about the same stuff in both threads anyway.

PW's most common short names in the games themselves are "Nick" and "Pheenie".

Personally, I'm calling him Nick...

New thread for new news. This thread is quite big and new information gets lost.

I've only played the demo for the original Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, and they call him Nick constantly, so yeah, he's Nick to me.

I think they should just change Phoenix's name to Jean Grey for Ultimate, IMO. It'd be confusing for a while, but eventually would settle things right.

But that would be confusing once they add Gene DLC.

"Feenie" is only used by a certain character in the 3rd game if I remember right.

So he's just "Nick" or "Wright" to me.

I got a simple solution to this:

Phoenix for the lawyer.
Jean for Jean "Chickehead" Grey.

Because Phoenix Wright > Jean Grey.

Fact. True story. No ifs or buts.

DEAL WITH IT

I want to try something like that but using Hakweye instead of Doom.

Thats true but have you seen how fast he gets three pieces?

Did you see the vid where Seth showed him off and got bunk evidence like 4 times in a row?

I see him get good evidence WAY more often than bad evidence though. Hell, in one video had Sent not died he would've likely gotten 6 of them in a row.

Is it true that Capcom said that they didn't include the Silver Surfer in MVC3 because they didn't know how to implement his surf board?

Sorry if this has been discussed to death, it's just that I find his omission to be the most ridiculous.

They said that about SS, yes.

The thing about that surf board excuse is it is obviously completely bs. Capcom gives garbage excuses all the time when they just didn't think about the character or for some other undisclosed reason. I have seen this excuse in many incarnations.

"How can we have a moveset for Ghost Rider? We would NEED to put him on his motorcycle and we can't figure out how to do that!"

"How can we have a moveset for Phoenix Wright? He is a lawyer! He can't be punching and kicking like fighting game characters, he wouldn't work!"

Both of those they obviously figured it. I also heard the same thing about Speed Racer and his car in TvC and now Silver Surfer and the board. It is capcom's job to figure out how these characters can be translated to a fighting game. If they really wanted to they could get it done, don't let these lines of reasoning sit as actual reasons.

lol the best was they didnt put Daredevil and Iron Fist in cause they are just about punching and kicking.

Yes, they did say that, however, it's actually reasonable, not ridiculous.
Ghost Rider has fought more than enough without his bike, and he has a lot of moveset potential without it, so putting it into a super is fairly reasonable.

However, Silver Surfer doesn't fight without his board. The surfboard is pretty much the thing he uses to convert the cosmic energy into attacks, so he needs his board. And unlike something like MODOK's hoverchair, the surfboard is ridiculously huge.
So, given these facts, how would you implement Silver Surfer riding his board and not fuck up hitboxes etc.? Keep in mind that walking through the surfboard would be stupid, and the surfboard having a hitbox would mean he has this huge protective barrier to his feet. Allowing opposing players to land on the surfboard would additionally require a physics engine solely for the surfboard.

I still wouldn't be surprised to see Thanos as DLC/in the next version. He has been a very major character in the marvel universe over the last decade. Plus I could always go for some more cosmic.

Regarding Silver Surfer, it really isn't my job to think it up, that is why Capcom has game designers. I am sure they could come up with something if they wanted to.

If I had to throw out an idea I would just say give Silver Surfer and the board itself separate hitboxes that are attached to each-other. Hitting the board's hitbox can inflict stun/knockdown/otg on the Surfer but not deal damage while hitting the Surfer himself does. Projectiles can pass through the board's hitbox in order to get to Surfer's (Except when he is blocking of course).

Who reads Cosmic marvel here?

What are Thanos' powers? Does/did he really have those damn bubbles?

I hate those things. Very un-badass, hehe.

I haven't read the old 70s/80s cosmic stuff. He didn't have any bubbles in anything in the last decade though. He does bigger things like trying to crush Galactus with a planet. His "official" super power, I believe, is just super intelligence. He also knows a ton of different fighting styles though from all over the galaxy.

Regarding Silver Surfer

I repeat - that additional hitbox on his feet is either going to make him godlike (nobody can literally reach him at least when he's in the air, and the board's box pushes out everyone as soon as they land on it) or absolute garbage.
Being a game designer myself, I know how hard it is to implement certain things into a fighting game, and Silver Surfer's board is nigh impossible to implement without breaking him in either way.

Thanos in MvC2 is actually using the Infinity Gems, which he doesn't have anymore. The Gems granted him power over pretty much everything.

Without them, though, he still isn't a pushover - he can manipulate matter and energy, also teleportation, telepathy, and the basic superhuman body and healing factor. Additionally to that, he's a sorcerer, so magic is at his disposal at well.
