UMVC3: Phoenix Wright and Nova Revealed!

First of all, I don't care about top tier. It doesn't really matter to me compared to team construction.

More importantly, you shouldn't talk about fundamentals with any character, because you really don't know. It's a month till the game's even out. I'm only willing to discuss the most basic vagueries of the new characters right now, and I'm sure as HELL not going to discuss their relation to the rest of the cast in terms of top 3 or whatever. We can agree to disagree on this one, but I'm on Jago's side as far as Vergil goes.

Which may or may not matter.

Ghost Rider does have some chip damage through pretty much all his specials do chip (Yoga flame does quite a bit). His Heartless Spire is fucking godlike (especially as an assist) which means that anyone who can't instantly appear behind him is going to have a tough time against him because this move is so spam friendly. Just on the strength on his assist, I have to put him at around Akuma tier.

Because he has a slow 3/4ths screen beam that wallbounces he's as good as Akuma? That's insane, Akuma is one of the best overall characters in the game, and there's not a lot of proof either way of how good Ghost Rider really is.

I think Ouroborus is too powerful to sleep on and he has a very good set of tools to him to play different match ups. Plus he has one of the best mix up games in UMVC3 plus at least a couple great assists. Probably going to take some time before people get solid with him but he's a legit threat. I have him at least in high tier with the potential to be the best in the game if his potential is unlocked.

It might be a great mixup facilitator, but it also drastically scales combos and forces you to use a different combo set while not building meter for a long period of time. It's not perfect. I'm not sleeping on it, but I'll only give credit where it's due.
 
Yeah, I am inclined to agree with God's Beard's judgment as well other than Nova almost certainly being high tier...he just looks way too solid. I can understand why you want Vergil to be the best Dahbomb since you are a huge Vergil fan-boy but he really does look like a huge meter hog, which isn't a good thing.
 
I'm not even going to judge any character based on footage and a handful of people (as good players as they might or might not be) saying stuff about them.

The most solid information we have as of now are Max's Assist Me videos. According to them, Ghost Rider doesn't seem bad at all. Though I'll definitely wait until the top players get their hands on them.
 
Jago said that Stinger is unsafe and he made the mistake of thinking it's like Dante's Stinger where it can't be special cancelled. You can cancel Stinger into launcher and launcher into downward slash which is fairly safe or keep it going. Or cancel Stinger into a special like JC which is also safe. He basically just watched the trailer and made some assumptions based on thinking he is like Dante. Even same moves of Vergil/Dante differ. On ground I don't think there is anything that any other character has that can contest Vergil's normals, even Dante himself would have trouble. I don't remember what else he said about Vergil but at least half of it was proven to be false by the time the UMVC3 tournament rolled around.

Of course saying someone is top 3 is a long shot but I like making such claims because it stirs people up. :D Although I will be trying my best to push my Vergil to that level so it's not like I am just making shit up.

Who is taking about Chain of Rebuttal? I am talking about Heartless Spire and to some extent Yoga Flame moves. Just look at the properties on Heartless Spire (as a special and as an assist), near instant start up, OTG, persists even if Ghost Rider is hit, absorbs projectiles, has a massive hit box, causes insane block stun, sets up positions for reset and anti-airs. Similar for Yoga Flame only it starts up slower but has better persistence and better for locking down as an assist (HS is for GTFO property).

That's potentially 2 top tier assists and that's enough to be in the High tier range if your on point game is solid enough and when Ghost Rider has moves like that at his disposal... yeah you can't really sleep on Ghost Rider if you are a non-teleporter.

I think it's pretty much meant to be used in conjunction with X Factor where it can down 2 characters rather quickly. But those points are valid and it's true.. it will take some time to unlock it's potential.

I swear to god.... I wish Vergil wasn't as good as I am talking him up to be. Because it means that people are going to ride his bandwagon straight to Hatersville. Also meter management is a problem for characters who can't build meter well... like Arthur. I remember similar claims being made for Viper when she popped up. Vergil has solid combos spanning wall/ground bounces and has great reset/mix ups... he will be self sufficient in meter management and damage output although putting him in the game at 2nd spot would be more preferable as you can take benefit of his safe DHC options and assist.

Not to downplay what you or God's Beard (welcome back man) have to say on the character, because it is true, but who's to say that Viper syndrome (building the meter back just as quickly as he burns it) won't kick in between all of his tools and ability to extend combos?

I'm not the most knowledgeable, but based on what we've seen, I think there's a strong possibility that Verg will go somewhere between both GB's and Dahbomb's estimations of the character which will still put him in "more than solid" territory.

Also, fuck yeah Dr. Strange. :D
 
Ghost Rider's s.H hits pretty much everywhere on the screen, is super fast, and combos into itself xx chain of rebuttal. He has really good stuff. He will be THE zoning character.
 
Man I wished Vergil was low profile like Firebrand. That way I would be one of the first people to come up with tech on him although that is not looking like a reality anymore. Everyone I know wants Vergil on their teams. :(

I wish if we could have mix and matched our costume bonuses. I want that Viper alt so bad, but business woman Morrigan was just too cool.

Hey, just be happy that your golden boy got in. Most of mine that I'd hype to the level you did Vergil are stuck in a state of limbo between Capcom's "SHIP THIS SHIT NOW" business strategy and Niitsuma really pushing for some of them, but ultimately not making it for this round.

You could always help out the Strange practices, we need to get that knowledge after all. :D

In the myriad of leaks I've forgotten who but someone said its still ass.

But they have improved matchmaking so it doesn't boot you to main menu, now it just boots you to the search screen -.-' Seriously how hard is it for the game to set it to keep looking for matches after one fails? FFS.

Above all, just like MvC3, don't count it out until it's out in the wild. Which is the truth really, you never know about any game's online until it's actually out in the real world and no longer running at light speed. As far as I can tell, l can't see how it can get worse, especially with shit like H&H and spectator rounding it. Maybe they'll actually use the netcode Ono's team gave them this time around... maybe.

EDIT: Bec why don't you think you'll get a code?

You know every hands on impression of Strange has said he will be a high difficulty character to use ,that he is punishable on his moves, and that he has no way to run away in most situations right?

Nova I think you at least gave a fair crack at when you said you can't tell which way he'll go yet, but its looking like he'll go straight up the list from some of the comments made on him. Makes sense to me given he can ignore keep away, and that he has every tool in the game.

Plus you do realize that She-hulk and X-23 have no teleport or projectiles and that they are still viable right? Good...now think about that with a shit ton of damage and with some really useful hypers and tools like...oh say...boosts on def/off/meter build and built in high low options in combos. Iron Fist is not low tier and I seriously question your sanity for putting anyone that fast with that many tools and damage so low. I'm not saying he'll be the next She-Hulk, but I wouldn't be surprised if there are lots of moments that put him up fairly high in the rankings. And don't try to pull the launcher crap...he's got a crumple that leads into boosts that combos in after H. With that available he should never lmhs anyways. This just keeps him from being a mash character.

I dunno. I was being a bit dramatic anyway, I'm sure there are pre-order bonuses, but when it comes to Japanese developers, Europe (and Australia) usually gets the shaft. We didn't get a CE for MvC3 either.

Yesterday in France, we had the chance to test the NYCC build of UMVC3. I played the game a lot with eLivepro|Alioune, and he finds some great setups and great synergy with Vergil/Dr.Strange/Dr Doom

We got some videos, we will upload them soon.

I've been asking a smaller store if he could check with his reseller if I could get any pre-order codes through him but so far the game isn't even showing up in the listings. I'm trying to get it day -3 or something which would about coincide with the US release. Definitely not going with zavvi on this. I'd get it a lot cheaper but with them it could arrive up to 3 weeks late.

We organized a tournament, and the winning team got a really nice Wright. His dog assist is really useful, easy unblockable setup with that assist + Ghost Rider.

@Oldschoolgamer : Yes it's the same Alioune. He really liked the game, he was about to drop Doom but finally he'll drop Magneto on UMVC3, principally because of his new airdash (Even if the Magnetic Blast loop still works)

It's all good man... we've been doing this for a long time now. It's fun as hell no need to work yourself up. We make tier list out of anything these days... hell I just posted a tier list in the CT just because I felt like it.

All I know is that I am going to be eating some crow if Vergil ends up being bad. But hey... it was fun while it lasted.

Kinda suprised at no Apollo Justice alt color, but i guess its an idea for alt costume... They could even change Maya into Trucy
