I'm pretty sure these kind of statements would fall under hate speech laws in Canada. It wouldn't be considered acceptable to say these kinds of things about your neighbour, never mind our Prime Minister. The posters would probably be subject to Criminal charges.
Indeed.

As awful as they may be, you'll notice that these people are NOT being prosecuted for these statements. The Freedom people claims to be in jeopardy still stands and this is one tiny example. People are free to throw around the most hateful, racist bullshit they can drum up with no real consequence.

I'm fucking SHOCKED (albeit, slightly not surprised if that works) at the amount of young, vapid racists up and coming in this country. Fucking disgusting.
I know, right? I'm kind of shocked by some of the statements flying around. The people MAKING these statements somehow think THEY actually knew BETTER? What kind of sick logic is that? Hateful, racist assholes who are likely highly religious claim to know best.

That's a very good point.

In fact, I'd love to see one of those morons respond to that aha

Well, I'm not happy with the results but what can you do? Life goes on. I'm happy for those of you who got the result you wanted, hopefully Obama will have a good second term.

So you think on a purely economic standpoint, the Republicans would have performed better? some of the BBC coverage seemed to suggest that Obama's bailout of US motoring companies a few years ago won him states like Ohio and Michigan.

No, I'm saying the Republicans would have performed better had they, starting back at the inauguration in 2009, NOT decided to spend the next 4 years treating Obama like the boogeyman. Instead of trying to shift the country to the fringes of the right, taking their cues from pundits like Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck, they should have altered their message to at least include the more moderate and introspective Republicans out there. But what happened is, they believed their own hype. They sold themselves on this idea of an Obama that never existed in the first place, which became increasingly harder for people to take seriously. They seriously had NO new ideas beyond doing what W tried and failed at, and 'anything but that illegal alien in the White House.' They threw out any of the subtle, poignant arguments the moderates could have presented for them, and replaced it all with a circus side-show.

Once you start getting into the nuances of what Obama actually accomplished, such as the auto bailout, none of the rhetoric to come out of the GOP had any legs to stand on.

Electoral College system is one of logistics these days.

Electoral College system will not go away until both of the following happen:

1) Fully electronic voting

2) Federally managed elections

The reason is simple: in a close election, if it were only PV based, how would you initiate a recount? Where would you initiate it? It would be nearly impossible to manage and potentially expensive to every state because they would have to all execute a recount. It would be prohibitively expensive and time consuming. With an EC system, you can just initiate a recount in small number of states if necessary.

EC is fine. It makes a logistical nightmare scenario (close race, recounts) much easier to localize and manage and has worked well.

in holland we have this electronic voting thing.

i know some provinces who still use a pencil etc but most city's have electronal voting.

Well, I'm not happy with the results but what can you do? Life goes on. I'm happy for those of you who got the result you wanted, hopefully Obama will have a good second term.

classy. I'm happy to see 538 was right but it pretty much takes all the fun out of the guessing game now, huh? Three predicted elections in a row is a pretty stunning feat.

um, no... it's civilized... there's a distinct difference... that you can't see that is sad...

Its civilized to decide what people can and can't say. I'm glad to not be a part of your civilization.

Absolutely. It simply went too far.

Christian conservative extremists ruined any chances the party may have had.

The big problem for conservatives is the lack of free, non-socialist countries in the world. We were the last remaining bastion of freedom. We can't just pack our bags and move to Canada. Plus they have bagged milk.

No problem. I'm not bitter. I've suffered for 4 years under oppressive socialism so now I can understand your mindset better. It's the initial stage of giving up my freedom that was difficult.

The best economies are modelled after both capitalist mixed with socialist concept. The fact of human greed is an absolute truth and its complete removal untenable. Therefore, a pure capitalistic market skews what it was meant to do as economic power shifts from from one segment of population to another and with it the powers to dictate policies that further aid in keeping the rich, rich and then get richer. A purely socialist government on the other hand may become laced with corruption and too much of govt. ownership limits personal freedom.

I don't think anyone will suffer in Canada because our economic systems comprise of both. More to the point, it is not a perfect system here because NO system is and its primarily has to do with human nature.

If you want to feel free and be not responsible for any of your action, move to a jungle or better yet the south. It's filled with people whose views are completely rigid because of media koolaid they've drinking. What's more, they have great guns as well, hate caring for society they are a part of, hate paying taxes despite using public service, don't get mad at banksters despite being screwed by them in the last economic depression and some of them love to shout the "N" word at their tele wishing that a white capitalist, flip flopping, tax cutting, christ loving, abortion banning, equality of marriage hating, gay parent dismissing, rich guy had won the election.

Oh and Obama ain't no saint either. Probably the most dangerous president to date with all his kill list and drone strikes that cares not for collateral damage and a liar when it comes to protecting whistle blowers. Still he is somewhat the lesser evil.

Oh some aren't even tying to hide their feelings anymore. These all look like 'next generation' conservative voters so the idiocy and racism will continue.

Find them. Find each and everyone of them and ensure that their employers FIND their corresponding employees tweet. If the person is unemployed or a youngster, hope that their parents (If they aren't slimy racist cunts as well) see what great kids they are raising.

I beseech ANONYMOUS to find these filthy, inane, racist, vile trash.

No Bublbo, the problem for us Republicans is that our party has been hijacked by fanatical over-religious morons. It's gone far too far to the right. And as long as it stays there we will keep losing political power in today's America. Ironically enough, today's Democratic party has come further to the middle than it used to be, and to be blunt, today the Democratic party is almost more old-school Republican than our own party is. I'm a Republican, or I think I used to be, but in many ways I'm more a Democrat today, simply because the party has moved away from me. It's moved away from a lot of people.

The problem with this election was that our party put up Romney, a flip flopping "moderate one day and extreme right the next" man who can't make a stand on anything, against a moderate Democrat who says what he means. Obama had an actual plan, Romney had talking points. Obama is believable, Romney is almost a caricature. We had Jon Huntsman up there in the lineup, a true honest Republican who would have stood an actual chance against Obama, and our party pushed him out and chose the crazies instead. THAT's the Republican party's problem.

I'm hoping Christie can bring the party back together to it's principles in four years. Or at least I'm hoping that someone can. Because if we put up a lineup like 2012 again, with candidates like Perry, Bachman, Santorum, we are going to lose, again. And honestly, if that's what the Republican party is today, then I want it to lose.

It would be pretty hilarious if Obama just came out and said "No more Mr nice President. Time to get stuff done!" But how much can he actually do if Republicans in the House of representatives go back to their stalling tactics again? Tne they get to turn around in 2016 and say "you voted for a Democrat president and nothing got done! Vote republican and we'll make quick decisions".
Maybe the Dems will push hard to try and win back the majority in the House. I don't know how plausible that is, but I certainly don't think the Dems and Obama should bother with trying to reach across the aisle anymore if they don't have to.

What's funny to me about all these people ready to leave the country (they won't) is that I *AM* actually leaving the country soon. Nothing to do with the elections, of course, but it was strange voting knowing that I won't be living here for much longer. :\

Real reason why the Republicans lost and will continue to lose until they fix their image and messaging:

real-reason.jpg

Women outvoted men by 6% and there is an 11% gap favoring Democrats.

It's funny because the republican party is about to crucify Christie for supposedly handing the election to obama because of sandy or some insane thing. They're killing all their best chances and they don't even see it.

Can we stop pretending the GOP base are all a bunch of racist rednecks?

The election is over guys. 5 racists tweets should not hold meaning for anyone. Idiots still exist. News at 11.

I really don't care who won, but Obama seems the lesser of the 2 evils, in my opinion. And I just laugh at all those racist comments from people? Really? A skin color? *shakes head* Sadly I live in Texas, so I'm around them, even some of my family members are. Sad really. Like my Uncle says hes gonna flee the country if Obama wins. Can't wait to see that happen, I'm just going to laugh.

I don't really get this two evils jazz. Obama wasn't the perfect president, nor has anybody ever been but he wasn't a bad president by any stretch.

Yea times like these I wish I could put talibans, white racists, black racists, tamil tigers, asian racists and all other vile assholes into a giant arena filled with weapons akin to Hunger Games and watch them TEAR THEMSELVES APART. Limb to fucking limb, clawing at each other's skin, flesh and bones, blood spilled every where and the air filled with cries of excruciating agony. And this followed by these pathetic shit eaters gasping for their last breaths as they lay in their filth of blood, piss and maybe even shit. I HATE the fact these racist individuals will perhaps go on to make the lives of others miserable based on race if and when they reach a position of power.

The thought police are out in full force, I see.

No, I'd not arrest them but let their employers know what kind of people they are employing and what potential threat it carries with them as they move up the chain of command.

Kind of scary and right in line with some of the Muslim extremists they claim to hate.

Yes, EXACTLY like Muslim extremists.

Come on guys. The Republican party = muslim extremism now?

Look, I know you all won last night and are really, really giddy but come the fuck on.

Obama gets shit for the complacency of the democrats. He is often unfairly equated to being the chairman of the party, which is hilarious given his general apathy for congress.

I agree with some things and disagree with others.
The Republican party needs to change and change fast or it won't be around for long. I agree that social conservatism needs to go away. They also need to fight much much harder for minority votes.
I disagree with you that Obama has an actual plan. He did little in the way of telling the country how he would manage the debt and deficits and get Americans working again. Instead, his campaign relied on attacks on Mitt Romney. He has no clear mandate for his second term.

No! Bulbo leaving?!
I woke up this morning not knowing the full results of the election. My heart couldn't take the suspense any longer and it was looking bad for Romney so I checked out around 10-10:30pm last night. When I woke up, I was hoping for that one big miracle where I'd open my eyes and see the bright shining city on the hill. Instead, on my way to work, I saw crumbling roads, broken down cars, people in ditches and a bird flew into the grill of my car. After I hit it, I started wishing it was a bigger bird. A big fucking yellow bird.
Fucking election sucked.
I'll try to stay on GAF, but I can't guarantee that where I'm going will have internet access. *I reserve the right to change my mind*

What's not to get?

A lot of people don't care for either Obama or Romney but understand one of them is going to win so they vote for "the lesser of two evils" It's just a term people have used for a long time, if i voted i would of voted Obama even though i don't stand eye-eye with a lot of his views simply because he is "the lesser of two evils" to me. And wasn't a bad president by any stretch? That's debatable depending on who you talk to.

So basically, it's giving smaller states a political handout that they haven't earned? :)

No, back then the fear was that New York, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania would dictate the elections with their larger populations. Rhode Island, Delaware, and Georgia basically would have no say in national elections. So each state started with an electoral vote.
It has evolved into the current system.

Yeah, I support people's right to spout racist garbage. I certainly don't condone it, but I don't think it should be a criminal offense.

I don't think they should be arrested. But I also have no problem if someone decides to send these tweets to their respective employers either.

I don't remember asking it to be made into a criminal offence, at least one that the police should get involved in. It's about action and its rightful consequence.

Fair enough. I can see that angle though I probably wouldn't do it.

I know. Christie is exactly the kind of Republican that the party absolutely needs to rally behind now. He is honest, outspoken, stands for his (consistant) values, gives credit where it is due irregardless of what "party" they belong to, he isn't too fanatical to avoid reaching across the party line to work together. He embodies everything that the party needs to be in this modern world, where as Romney was honestly the worst of what our party has to offer. Well no, Romney is not as bad as Santorum or Bachman, they would have been worse.

The Republican party needs to retool and adapt to modern times. They need to wake up and leave the extreme religious shit behind. No more magic vagina's and rape being God's will. No more policing the world by brute force, the world does not want that, and neither does most of America. No more favors for the rich, 99% of America doesn't want that, and even a good percentage of the top 1% doesn't want that. Fiscal conservatism does not need to walk hand in hand with extremism.

This should be a large wake up call. I'm curious to see if the party just sleeps on through it or actually opens it's eyes...
