April 30, 2013 — A University of Wyoming student has been cited for interference with a police investigation in connection with a post on a non-university-affiliated Facebook page that included a reference to sexual violence.

Meghan Lanker-Simons received the citation as a result of false statements she made to the UW Police Department. The UWPD investigation concluded that she was responsible for the post on the now-dismantled “UW Crushes” Facebook site in which she ostensibly was targeted as a potential victim of sexual violence.

The citation followed a police interview of Lanker-Simons and a search of her computer equipment pursuant to a search warrant. UW police obtained substantial evidence verifying that the offending Facebook post came from Lanker-Simons’ computer, while the computer was in her possession.

She pointed out the offending Facebook post on her blog, which has since been memory-holed. Google still has a cache, though.

This event was then used as a catalyst to initiate a gathering on campus to promote rape culture awareness.

She has since gotten a lawyer and plans to plead not guilty.
In regards to recent allegations, I’ve retained counsel and entered a plea of not guilty.

This isn't the first time she's been in the news. Apparently in 2010, she sued the University because they tried to ban Bill Ayers from speaking.

It's almost as bad as that Cat Party guy who goes around flaunting his intelligence, success, and good looks. Why can't I be as cool as him?

As for the OP's question of "Why?": Once people invest in a political belief, the emotional attachment to their argument leads them to care more about making the other side look bad than they do about the actual issue.

It's certainly a graphic and hateful post, but I don't really read it as a rape threat to start with. I've heard plenty of people expressing the desire to hate fuck someone (or in some cases they'd actually done it), and none of those people ever meant that they wanted to forcibly sexually assault the person of their hatred. There's like 10 UrbanDictionary definitions for "hate fuck" and none of them mention non-consensual sex.

I think it was more to the effect that such discourse leads to a promotion of rape culture, which is what they protested against due to the comments.

"hatefuck" is such a juvenile term. I don't think I've ever come across someone who has used it in a way that made me chuckle. The last time I remember it being used on the internet, it was when Playboy wrote an article about which conservative women they'd like to hatefuck.

i'm not a psychologist, nor do i play on on tv, but i would not close out the possibility that this lady actually does harbour some kind of fantasies of being hate fucked by a right wing nutjob. the imaginary message doesn't even technically say anything about rape.

I'm onboard with speaking out against rape culture, but hate fucking is a term people use time to time, and I've always heard it in context of consensual sex between people who hate each other but are irresistibly attracted to each other (like an ex-boyfriend / ex-girlfriend pairing).

Grouping things into rape culture that AREN'T part of rape culture only gives ammunition to the other side, so they can claim that you're labeling things as rape culture even when it's not.

Extraordinarily dumb. She'll be expelled and no grad school will have her after this. Her dreams of being a lawyer have been dashed by a misguided attempt at becoming an activist. The only people she assisted are those she's trying to speak out against by painting the organizations she worked with in such a negative light.

Wow this has gotten big. I go to the school and I just heard about it like 2 days ago when people were protesting oufside. That's incredibly stupid of her to pull shit like that. Hopefully she gets some punishment.

Normally I'd find Internet drama overflowing into the real world like this amusing, but in this case I just feel kinda embarrassed for everyone involved. Hopefully the woman involved can get some help for her attention (or whatever) issues.

Kind of an off-shoot of Munchausen syndrome, I guess. Looking for attention and sympathy. She probably needs help. But it looks like she is digging her heels in.


edit: uh, or it could be a reeeeally cynical attempt at bolstering her image as an activist. I'm not really sure which is worse.
