Not a bad episode, definitely the best premier ep since the pilot. I like Oberyn although I thought the brothel introduction was beyond predictable (many of us called the bisexual angle last year). It almost veered into "hyper sexual foreigner" trope/parody levels though. Still, he came off as a badass which is nice.

I agree with others about the Rhaegar/Elia stuff confusing viewers, but looking at the No Spoilers thread a few people understood it and explained it to everyone else. Given how much exposition the show does I don't understand why they rarely mention Rhaegar; his children's murder has been mentioned many times on the show though.

Last scene was cool. Great Hound one-liners.

Oberyn might be my favourite character so I was really interested to see how he turned out. So far I'm very happy with him. I think a lot of people are going to really like him. It's going to make his death even more tragic.

Not really a fan of Jaime's "well, Sansa is safe here!" attitude. I wondered how that would be handled and they could have found a better way than that.

They seem to just be moving things around and showing off page stuff. Arya and the Hound stayed in a village for quite awhile, helped rebuild it, and then ran into Gregor's men. I'd imagine the S4 arc willl end with Lannister men arriving in the village to hunt them, Hound gets injured etc.

Sounds cool to me.

Maybe they'll have Arya and the Hound run into Hot Pie.

Eh, I feel Rhaegar has been mentioned plenty on the show. I don't think there's any good way of getting around the fact that the plot of the books will be hard for a lot of people to follow if they haven't read the books. There's a reason why people thought these books were unfilmable.

Wasn't anyone bothered how the kept summarizing pretty much every thing that happened that past seasons in every scene?

No, I think it would bother people a lot more if they didn't keep clueing them into story points. It's a complex show with a lot of names and a lot of story strands. And a lot of people wouldn't have watched any Game of Thrones for a year

There's a lot of summarizing in the first few chapters of every book, isn't there? Maybe i'm confusing it with the First Law series or the wheel of shitty time.

I still think they should have done flashbacks or a backstory episode in the first season, just so people can get their heads around characters who are talked about but never shown

A lot of people are taking a shine to Oberyn!

Heh.

It will be nine weeks before I start this (can't stand waiting a week between episodes). Good to see people like the casting so far.

I don't like how much time we spend with Shae. She is going to betray him and sleep with Tywin as revenge.

Fuck thats cold ;(

I read so many reviews that the first episode was slow but I didn't feel that way at all. What a short hour.

BREAKDOWN:

+Tywin never pulls a punch. The way the Rains of Castamere blended in with the opening was great.
+DREADFORT ON THE MAP
+Oberyn's introduction was lengthy and incredible. Easily one of the most memorable introductions in the series. I know many were skeptical because they want the perfect casting for such a likeable character, but I think Pascal is nailing it so far.
+So many great one liners. Even Aemon and Jon Snow got shots in.
+The Inn scene, while very different in the book, was intense and wonderful to watch play out. McCann is easily one of my favorite actors in the show and this is one of the Hound's most memorable scenes thus far. I even cringed at the knife to the eye. The last shot of Arya riding her pony over the ruined countryside was an incredible way to end the episode.
+Good god almighty Jamie + Brienne = OTP
+Dayne and Dunk references! Also maybe a sly blue rose one as well.

-No Team Stannis
-So are the Thenns cannibals or something? I remember in the book they were one of the more "advanced" wildling groups as they actually had a hierarchy and a set leader (the Magnar). It's strange to see them as weird scarred maneaters.

Overall an amazing episode. I saw a lot of wonderful acting with great dialogue. I can't believe I have to wait a week for the next episode.

I'm curious to see the new gregor in action, I hope the guy can act at least a bit, I want the duel to be the most crushing event of the tv show year

Nice return episode. Best part of it was the pre-titles sequence of melting down Ned's sword. Eerie and affecting.

Fixed that for you.

Ilyn Payne had it while Tywin was waiting for the smith to arrive. Robb never had it.

Very interesting to see the bit with Arya from the newly released chapter. Martin must have released it because they moved the content.

I read all five books after the first season aired and have only been watching the series sporadically since then, so someone refresh my memory: Was Jaime's storyline somehow sped up to bring him to King's Landing sooner? I seem to recollect Tyrion being gone by then, for reasons all of us know well.

The cannibal thing I don't recall ever being mentioned in the books, but while they were advanced in the sense of their hierarchy and metallurgy (mining and forging bronze weapons and armor, iirc), they were also a very mean bunch. Nothing noble about them, cannibals or not. :p

no, he visits him in his cell and whatnot

I'll be honest, Ice is still the saddest death in the ASOIAF series for me. I teared up when they showed it being melted into those scummy swords by lord of scum Tywin. Never forget, never forgive.

Jaime comes to King's Landing shortly after Joffrey's death but before Tyrion's departure.

Yeah, I agree. It's like their trying to set us up to feel bad for her so her later behaviors are understandable and I don't like it.

I think it was a way to highlight their situation. Winter has become too harsh even for the wildlings and they simply cannot live off the land anymore.

Or maybe they just really hate Crows.

After reading the Westeros.org recap, they seem to believe that they have merged the Thenns with one of the cannibalistic Wildling clans

They have to though, they've changed the character so much from what she was in the books. In the book she's just some dumb whore. In the show they've presented her differently and expanded the character.

I don't think many people are sympathizes for Shae. She knows exactly what situation Tryion and herself are and continues to act like a child.
