Just rewatched on Sky Atlantic (man those adverts suck, so much better on the simulcast). I noticed that they subtly foreshadowed Tywin's death with the "I'll likely never see the Rock again before I die" line.

Nice to see that non-readers seem to be excited for Oberyn.

Loved the chicken stuff.

I thought new Daario was all right. Definitely like his looks more than the old one. lol

Since season 4 will be a wild ride right up to the end imagine the ratings for that thing next year. Jesus. There is no way they won't rise, this season will be amazing and hype as all hell.

What thing? I can't think of any big moments that would be in season 5.

I meant the show as a whole. There won't be too many big events happening in season 5 (that depends on how they condense AFFC/ADWD though), sure, but with so many bombs dropped throughout the entirety of season 4 I don't think it's too far-fetched to expect another ratings spike same time next year.

FFS, I finally caught up from yesterday, reading that many posts took way too damn long, don't think I'll be doing that again. Solid premiere but everything I want to say has already been said and I feel like I need a nap after going through the seven new pages (100 posts per page or bust) that came up. I also keep getting distracted. >_<

Oh, I totally forgot who played Janos Slynt, when I was picturing him as looking like John Quade I think or someone else who of looked like him.

Yeah, makes me wish they'd do a prequel season/mini series. Probably a little too late for that now though.

Bran, Enternet.

Episode 9 might be reserved for Tywin L. death

Episode 10, Tyrion's last scene.

ehhhh it's whatever. I kind of already got spoiled on Joffs death by some asshole on a twitch livestream. but this just confirms it D:

my fault for not paying attention I guess. will stray far away from here in the future :p

I had it spoiled last year while reading the books (I was either still reading ACoK or not there yet in ASoS) by some "reporter" on an entertainment site's story of Tommen's casting.

How do you think they are going to play out the Shae angle in the show? From the books the impression I got was that despite how she acted towards Tyrion she never actually loved him. In the show it appears that she is actually in love with him. My guess is that they portray her as a lover scorned.

Yeah, lover scorned, it's kind of lame but it'll probably make her death get a bigger reaction unless they make her absolutely brutal during the trial. I imagine people will hate her enough before he kills her.

Just for fun I expanded that chart (roughly, I just copy pasted Storm) with AFFC and ADWD added and by drawing a line of best fit through the points found that at the current rate they're progressing through the story TWOW will start almost exactly with the first episode of season 7. I think it's more likely to be half of season 6 and all of season 7, but you never know. Plus, some stories have been moved really far forward (Bran).

Great little character moment I forgot about: When Jon says that Mance has giants with him, and Janos scoffs and looks around and awkwardly realizes no one else is laughing. Great, subtle way to show how out of place he is.

I feel like the reveal of the Thenn's cannibalism was somehow meant to be really shocking. Hannibal has numbed me.

The way they built it up I was expecting it. The moment I saw the guys and their weird tattoos and their bald heads I just knew it. Then the leader of them talked (especially that bit how the meat south of the Wall is much fatter etc.), and it was confirmed for me, 'specially after they push off the rabbits from the fire.

Yeah, I really liked how Janos seemed so out of place among the other crows. Everyone else knew what was going on, but Janos was like "the law is the law" and "I was the commander of the City Watch" (though I know that line was dropped in to refresh viewers' memory about the character), etc., but nobody gave a shit about what he had to say.

The build up towards oo what is that guy from the freaky clan taking out of the bag to cook instead of the animal?? made it almost painfully obvious that it would be a human body part.

Jaime comes to King's Landing shortly after Joffrey's death but before Tyrion's departure.

So I was half right. I'm guessing the wedding is next week, although we haven't seen Littlefinger yet. Anyway, I thought the season premiere was fun, especially that opening scene and Oberyn.

With the way they portray the Wildlings, I always assumed some cannibalism existed somewhere.

I mean, they're out there in the snow with no government. Food is probably hard to find.

They're called "Wildlings". Is thinking they eat people that much of a stretch?

Well shit. There's something about Arya killing people in the books that doesn't quite hit until you see a little girl take pleasure in stabbing a man in the throat.

The books are better concerning Arya. She kills a guards when escaping Harrenhal and in that scene in the tavern was better in the books. She continuously stabs the guy and the hound had to pull her off him.

The way wildlings have been portrayed by the people south of the Wall (or as the wildlings call them, kneelers) is similar to how our ancestors painted foreign cultures and peoples as barbarians and savages with no culture or rules.

A big part of Jon's involvement with the wildlings was also to show that, they too are people. Just because they govern themselves in clans doesn't make them any less human - they too fight for survival. They just do it without bending the knee to a noble, or farming crops. Yes, they raid, but why not? It's no different than 2 warring houses sacking cities etc., and stealing food or anything, and they are at a continuous state of war with the kneelers.

As a matter of fact, if I remember right, most of the wildling clans, despite fighting each other a lot, and having "barbaric" customs and traditions (such as stealing a woman from another clan), do not condone the act of cannibalism. Only one or two of the clans (and I specifically only remember the ice-river clans being mentioned in that regard) practice it.

I know, it's just different seeing it. It's still striking in the books, but the combination of lil' Maisie Williams and the look on her face when she repeats Pollivar's words, god damn.

Here's a random thought that popped up when I took a leak before: You know in the opening credit they only show the name of a starring cast member if he or she is in the episode. If episode 9 takes place entirely at Castle Black, what the hell will they do then? IIRC, the only starring cast members at that are are Kit Harrington, John Bradley, Rose Leslie and Kristofer Hivju. Will they have long breaks between the names or something? Lol.

I doubt the entire episode 9 will take place at the Wall.

Now I wasn't moving that deep down that well of discussion.

I just meant that in this universe, you have regular folks, and a lot of people who have been rejected from that group in the Night's watch. Then you have this separate group of people who are even exiled from the exiled.

All I'm saying is that seeing cannibalism didn't make me think "They're nothing like those other Wildlings."

Maybe that's a failure of the show, but I don't think it says anything about my perception of foreigners, or those who hunted for food in our own culture.

I just wouldn't say "Damn Tormund Giantsbane, what's gotten into you?" if he bit off a finger.

Well don't forget about Mance Rayder, Stannis Baratheon, Melisandre... plenty of people at Castle Black in episode 9.

There's this fun post in the non-spoiler thread.
The ironic thing about Tywin is that while he's gained enough money, power, and influence to realize his obession with making House Lannister the dominant force in the Seven Kingdoms long term, his children, two incestuous twins and a dwarf, might not be up to the task. He's an old man facing the very real possibility that all he's built will go to shit the moment he dies.
I couldn't help but chuckle when reading the last line about things going to shit the moment he dies.

Those ratings are insane.

Calling episode 3 to have the biggest ratings of the season, though.

What thing? I can't think of any big moments that would be in season 5.

I expect them to make a big thing about several major players being on a quest to reach Danaerys next year. She's the show's most popular character, so having lots of the big players in Westeros converging towards her will probably be a big theme.

Yeah, I really liked how Janos seemed so out of place among the other crows. I really hope Jon uses his block by the end of the season. That'd be a hell of a scene for the character to finish on.

John Harker

Definitely doesn't make things up as he goes along.
Loved the episode.

I'm usually pretty spot on, but can't remember, have we seen Tywin's brother at all yet?
Like, has he even mentioned him (i.e., does TV Tywin have a brother)?

It's already been said that episode 9 will focus completely on The Wall, like 'Blackwater', by the same director.

I'm looking for the source.

Oooh. I cannot wait fort that.

I thought the premiere was great overall. It was a lot better than last season's and last season's wasn't bad. Pedro Pascal is looking like a great bit of casting. He's almost identical to how I imagined Oberyn. The scene with Ice at the start was fantastic as well.

Ah, thanks, I did not know that.

Yes, Kevan has appeared in a few episodes in Season 1 and 2.

I liked the part where Jon Snow mentions giants and Slynt repeats "giants" with a sarcastic tone while everyone just has a poker face going.

I really hope they keep making Janos as intolerable as possible. He's a character I just love to hate. Such a great payoff.

John Harker

I think that was some other, made-up-for-the-show Lannister who was always really dumb in Tywin's councils. Kevan was always there as just sort of a straight man.

Yea, Kevan is the sensible one in the family.
Which is why I find it interesting he isn't sort of starting to be introduced a little more, seeing how all Tywin's heirs are falling apart. Being as practical a man as he is, you'd figure he'd start getting The Rock more in order with his brother in charge at this point.

I think they could bring him in in season 5, have him briefly interact with Cersei to show how dumb he thinks she is, then maybe have him accompany Jaime for a while to build him up. You could maybe give him the speech from Tywin's sister about who Tywin's real son is. Then he can head back to King's Landing when stuff goes to shit with Cersei and begin his brief tenure as regent.
