I think Stannis will be reduced to his lowest point either before or during the battle and then still boss it anyway. He WILL be king

You know, since we all "know" he's going to die, I've been thinking that it actually makes sense. I think his story is essentially done. If it's true that Mel believes Jon to be AA and by resurrecting him he is now the living embodiment of that, then Stannis's story is over. Mel has turned on him and his purpose in the books is finished. There isn't a need for another contender to the throne. I think Shireen's Grayscale is going to prove to be something in the future and it would make sense if she was alone, away from her father, when it happened.

tl:dr - now that Jon's AA and Mel is obsessed with him, Stannis can die a heroic death; his story is ended

I hope he will at least earn a meaningful death since he has gone so far and done so much, especially as the man who least wants power. I get the feeling the show is going to do him dirty though, like Barristan. I don't want him to die in single combat to Ramsay or something, that would just be ridiculous. Even to Brienne it would mean nothing. I want him to die defending the 7 Kingdoms against a White Walker army, basically turn around when he knows it's started, and decided to save the Kingdoms and not the throne.

I'm really worried about his death in the show, I really don't feel they've put much effort into the why of Stannis. It feels like he just turned up at the wall 'because' and is riding to Winterfell 'because', and when he dies his story in the show will have been a whole lot of nothing followed by death at the hands of the Boltons.

If Stannis dies in the battle, then that would mean that the Bolton letter was true, wasn't it? I thought there was strong evidence that wasn't the case.

I love that we're in the dark as much as book readers here. I really have no clue how it's going to turn out. It could go either way. I have to lean towards Stannis winning because the Bolton storyline seems to have about run it's course. Without Reek or Sansa next year (barring some pretty weird changes), what is Ramsay doing?

Or maybe Stannis and Boltons both die due to LF.

If people don't understand why Stannis is currently in the North then this probably isn't a show they should be watching tbh.

Besides Stannis defending the realm from a wildling host out of a sense of duty, there's several pretty clear reasons as to why heading North made the most sense for him:

His army was decimated at the Blackwater. Him sitting around on Dragonstone waiting for the inevitable siege would accomplish nothing.

Going North keeps him safe from the thrones forces since the Lannisters and the Reach won't send men that far north with winter coming and Stannis isn't a significant enough threat currently anyways.

Stannis can rally the Northern lords to his cause by simply being there. He shows he gives a damn about the North by defending them from a wildling host and freeing them from Bolton rule.

Can also bide his time, lick his wounds, and gather sellswords to swell his ranks.

The show's really knocking all of the House of Black and White stuff out of the park, for all this season's other faults.

Arya, Castle Black, and Tyrion have all been quality. Which surprised me because I didn't care for Arya or Tyrion at this point in the books too much.

King's Landing is a little off with the Faith and the flimsy evidence against the Tyrells, but still serviceable. Winterfell was really good until they went all rape with it. Meereen is fine —at least on par with Dany's previous stuff — but nothing special. It's suffering a bit from some of the simplified politics and Barristan getting unceremoniously dropped. Dorne is a train wreck, and I liked Dorne in the book. :(

Location scouting spoilers:
Unless there is a major new city location in Winds we don't know about yet, I don't think anything else fits. It doesn't match the looks they've set for Pentos or Volantis, and the medieval-style architecture sets it up well as a place that feels older than King's Landing. And the coastal scouting would make sense if they're going to focus th Ironborn activity on Oldtown to merge plot threads and up the stakes a bit.

Supposed episode 9 synopsis from imdb. Take with a grain of salt:

Jon returns to the Wall; Arya runs into someone from her past; Mace visits the Iron Bank; Stannis faces a difficult decision; Daenerys oversees a celebration of athleticism.

Edit: TV Guide is the source
http://www.tvguide.com/tvshows/game-of-thrones/episode-9-season-5/the-dance-of-dragons/305628/

So it looks like
Jon doesn't get stabbed at hardhome which isn't surprising
Meryn Trant is about to get got
Mace is gonna talk with Tycho
Stannis' decision could be plenty of things
Daznaks Pit, her flying off would be a great closer to the episode

Thematically, and to make room for the Three Queens thing (presumably another succession war) that Littlefinger's orchestrating.
maybe arya and jaqen go to oldtown together
Maaaaybe. It's hard to say. Faceless Men/Euron/Sarella Sand all tie together pretty well with Oldtown and Pyke, but there's also the fact that the Faceless Man in Oldtown is very possibly after the Maester's book about how to kill dragons, and also the fact that a bunch of characters leave Oldtown to head toward Daenarys.

We honestly don't know where Arya's going after Braavos in the books or in the show. She's not gonna be there forever, I'm sure, but her future is at this point extremely open-ended (whereas other characters more clearly have things heading toward them or things they're heading toward).

Stannis making a hard choice makes me think Mel is going to pressure him to sacrifice Shireen to stop the snow.

Also, did not expect Jon to be back by 9.

OMG "closer to home"

thats brilliant.
Alfie and Iwan's moment was great. I also laughed at Mark Addy's, "I was told Sean Bean would be here"

Probably a bit of time jump (they flee Hardhome at the end of eight and arrive back at Castle Black at the beginning of nine).

Everyone's got a teleporter now, so why not

Yeah, and if Sam isn't being sent away this episode, then they may need him back by 9 to do that.

I think Oldtown could become a pretty big focal point for the show. You have Sam and Gilly plus the new cast they meet at the Citadel, you have the Ironborn characters who would be focusing their attack there instead of the Citadel, and you have the Faceless Men, which in this version could include Arya. I could even see them wrapping Dany into it, with them pushing her more quickly towards Westeros, she could be there by season's end, and whatever is supposed to happen between her and the Ironborn in Meereen can happen there instead. Maybe they restructure things so the horn is in the Citadel, Euron is trying to take the city to get it, the Faceless Men are trying to steal it, and Dany's fleet happens to be pulling into Westeros just as Euron gets it.

Obara's actress is bad though, nothing about it comes off as badass. They just put up an interview where she did her own fight scene, perhaps that was unwise. Hard to believe she got nominated for an Academy Award at one point

That's because on this show, Obara gives off nothing but that --just graduated from the Michelle Rodriguez School of Acting-- vibe. She's better than that.

She was great in that movie, but that was a long, long time ago. Also a bit of a case of her being "born" to play that role (Whale Rider). Not a coincidence that she has been MIA since then.

Reminds me of the people saying that German-Turkish former pornstar who played Shae couldn't be criticized because she supposedly won Germany's top acting award, but that had little impact or relevance on her not having very much linguistic or dramatic range in this series.

The entire Dorne and Sand Snakes storyline has been poor and it seems like with the cut on Bronn and how he was talking about that Dornishmen wife song and poisoned blades, he's a goner. The one thing I don't like about this season or really the past few seasons are the little small world building details they just choose to ignore.

I've always believed that Stannis will die attempting to fight the Others, he'll ride up wielding "Lightbringer" and try to clash blades with them only for the sword to snap in half since it's only a glamour and for him to die.

She got pregnant when she was 16, so that put the breaks on her acting career. She has been in something every year since 2008 so it's not like she's lacking roles.

Also Sarella is clearly the best sand snake anyways.

Stannis will kill Roose with one hand and Ramsay with the other. But since both his hands are occupied, the Night's King will get in a cheap shot, mortally wounding Stannis. However, Stannis grinds his teeth so loudly that it deafens the Night's King, which allows Jon Snow to finish him off. Winterfell is then renamed Stannisfell in his honor.

Huh? I'm not saying that she can't be criticized at all. Sand Snakes casting, acting, direction and choreography have been atrocious.

Melisandre is going to sacrifice Shireen to give Ramsay a mild headache.

I don't know if we're allowed to talk about that leaked behind the episode, but

The Aemon scene looks really well done and touching. The Cersei thing looks kinda bad, but what it leads to really has me grinning. Why doesn't Dany just straight up do what Daario says when he says it? He seems like a reasonable enough fellow.

I think you're remembering it completely wrong, and the situation was the complete opposite to what's being discussed. There were people that didn't like Shae but weren't smart enough to argue why besides "but she's a porn star!", and these idiots were reminded of the facts: she was no longer a porn star, and was in fact a talented, award-winning actress. Whether she was good on the show or not had nothing to do with any of that.

Indira Varma was excellent in Rome. She played her character with subtlety, grace, and depth. Now she must AVENGE OBERYN and she sucks.

Different shows produce different kinds of acting.

I am 99% convinced that D&D decided to change the end of ASOIF to have Balon Greyjoy inherit the iron throne.

Hello guys! I've just finished my week-long Thrones hiatus, brought on by the faux outrage over that scene, and I topped it all off with a trip to Sophie Turner's hometown. So now I'm right back where I started. Brilliant.

Did I miss anything major? I haven't been on Watchers all week either.

Inside the episode leaked again. No major spoilers though. Looks like we are getting some good scenes though.
