Until Dawn |OT| I know what you'll play this summer

Just completed it. Well, I'll be honest while I was always somewhat interested in this game ever since it was first announced a few years back, I really didn't have the highest of hopes this past few months from everything I'd seen from it - but holy fuck, straight up there as one of my favourites of the year, it'll be between this, Life is Strange and more than likely MGSV for my personal game of the year. I'd urge everyone to give this a shot if you're on the fence, well worth it. Great stuff from Supermassive.

Deaths:

Jessica
Sam - at the very end too, just moved my controller slightly after everyone had made it out of the house, poor Hayden.
Josh

TAJ

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.
Excited to see how this sells. I've spoken to quite a few non gamer couples who've bought it to play together.

I have a bad feeling about that. This game was way undershipped and Sony has to have lost a lot of potential sales to people caught up in the hype with no local stock to be found. Game sales are massively front-loaded.

Done....

My survivors:

Mike
Chris
Ashley
Emily
Jess

I lost
Sam
right at the end with one of those don't move sequences.:( I lost
Matt
by not giving him the
flare gun when Emily finds it
. I'd say that was a pretty good first blind run but man I felt awful losing the first mentioned death right at the end. The last two chapters are RIDICULOUS in terms of tension when you know lives are on the line and you can't just reload.

After finishing though, this isn't a good game - it's a GREAT one. Eager to jump right back in which I might do tonight but I'm traveling most of next week so I might wait till I'm back. If you love horror, you need to be playing this right now.

Warnen

Don't pass gaas, it is your Destiny!
Any chance they going to patch in inverse control scheme?

Also whats up with the shit frame rate? I swear it drops to sub 20 at parts.

Trying to see past these issues and give the game a chance but its not easy. Only 2 "chapters" in but liking it more as I go.

The exact same thing happened to me with
Sam
, was so disappointed in myself with that one, the tension in that entire sequence was incredible. Agreed that it's a great game, so fucking good, going straight back to it for Round 2.

Really really want to buy this straight away, but Danganronpa: Another Episode for the Vita is out next week...

The game sounds like my cup of tea.

it sucked too cause I did the first two sequences with

without an issue but the third one got me. :(

Watched the combo team of my wife and son play it.

They killed 3 people.

Matt - No flare gun at the critical point
Sam - Moved on the last test
Josh - Didn't find the diary to tell him the truth

My wife wanted to kill
Chris cause she thought he was an asshole.

Was glad
Emily lived cause though shes a bitch shes straight forward and knows what she wants...

Thy almost killed
almost everyone by exploding the house too soon but my son stopped her at the last second.

Final Episode Spoiler

That last sequence at
The Lodge when Sam and Mike went to the basemen
really reminds me of the epilogue from
Dawn of the Dead remake
. In that moment you know that shit has just gone from bad to worse. You thought you are safe but WRONG!

Planning to play through the game over the next weekend with my wife and family. Would it be viable gameplay wise if we each play a different character, and simply hand the controller over to whoever's character is up for controlling, or does the game not really allow for that kind of team effort? I know the decisions of certain characters can affect the outcome of the others, but I thought that'd just add to the fun and hilarity of it.

Going to set the PS Eye up for jump scare recording as well. Also going to black tape up the light for added stealthiness. Nobody but my brother in law knows the camera will be recording reactions lol.

Some characters get shafted in terms of playtime, so some of you would have a very bad time. Either pass the controller around randomly or we can spoil you the list of characters that have a decent enough amount of gameplay and you make them pick from that list.

That's fine, can just be a luck of the draw type thing. As long as I get a character that has a fair amount of screen time, I'm happy lol. I was thinking of going with either Josh or Mike. How are these two in terms of screen/game time?

Mike has a ton, Josh is on the lower end.

Sam and Matt were my survivors. Ashley got annoying so glad she got killed. Should have let Matt die too, fuck him. Gonna try to save them all the second time. Liked how I killed Mike: burned while in the cabin.

8.5/10

Hey so we've been walking around in circles for the last ten minutes and can't find the way back. We're in chapter 5.

we're in control of mike, we just got the key card from the corpse, and now we can't get back to the key card door. There's a lot of territory we're covering from the corpse room to the room with the restraining chair and cannot find how we got in. The door I'm almost positive is the door we came through is now blocked with a table.

Is this a glitch? Are we missing something obvious?

Not sure if this helps but there are two keycard doors. I don't think you can go straight back to the first one you encounter, you have to go through the second and eventually you get back around to the first. I think.

you don't back track, keep moving forward. There is a door in the
morgue where you first got the key card.
. Go that way

YOU... :(

Need to push forward.
There is a locked key card door in the same room as the corpse you can open now.

In classic post on the Internet and you will nearly immediately find the solution yourself, we just found it. Fuck. I'm pretty annoyed though, that was super easy to miss and it doesn't make sense that he can't just walk back the way he came. Severely mood breaking.

Thanks y'all. Wish that had been lit a bit better. Totally missed it and thought I had to go the other way.

This game is fucking great but ugh the
sudden switch from slasher flick to monster movie halfway through
bugs me kinda.

To be fair, I don't think I would have considered backtracking to the main area before checking everything in the current room first. I wouldn't consider that door easy to miss, either

I replayed the final chapter, and what a MASSIVE difference in the ending.
First time around, only had
2 Survivors Total
Second time around replaying the final chapter, only had
just 1 single death, Matt, and it was because I was a dumbass and attacked the deer, because at that point in time I did not know one could not make any choice.
Huge difference in how the ending played out!!

Fucking brilliant game. Think it is actually even my GOTY thus far.

Done. Played the last chapter twice because I fecked up. Really great game.

Edit: Are there multiple endings? I mean, endings that are completely different, not just on number of survivors.

The dialogue in the police interviews can change up a good deal depending on who survives and how they die. There's also a post credits sequence that depends on if someone survives.

So I rarely post on NeoGaf or anywhere else, but I had to chime in for all the people on the fence out there:

If you can spare $60, don't mind or obsess over frame rate, enjoy games with choices, and love the horror movie genre...then I highly recommend the game.

I played the game with a friend who doesn't even like horror movies, but he ended up finding the game interesting and fun while taking turns and making choices playing through the game. He ended up buying a copy of his own.

Even people in my household who do not watch horror movies enjoyed just watching me play. They also rarely watch me play any games, if ever. Some rare exceptions were the Uncharted games and Super Mario Galaxy 2. Until Dawn is now among these games that non-gaming people in my household now watch.

As for the actual game? I really enjoyed it. It may even be the most enjoyable game I've played all year. I haven't had much time to play games so I didn't feel like playing a super intense game where I have to memorize button combinations, have fast reflexes, or have deep thought in order to play. Until Dawn is definitely an interactive horror movie where choice matters. You can even check a Butterfly Effect feature as you progress through the game to see how actions you take at the beginning of the game affect dialogue and other choices down the later chapters.

So if you're on the fence, definitely worth checking out. If you don't get it now, then at least try out the game later down the line when the price drops.

Edit:
I forgot to mention my results: *Spoilers*

I somehow managed to save all the characters on my first blind run through.

At first, I just wanted to kill off everyone for fun, but as I played through, I kind of liked some of the characters and as the story progressed, the pressure to keep the ones alive kept building until the end. The final chapters were great.

I'm also not sure how I missed it but part of it is that there are four other things to examine in that room, which is probably the most in any single room so far.

EDIT: oh of course that's why there's a real House of the Devil movie poster seen in the game, Larry Fessenden co-wrote it! He's the dude killed in the opening scene of You're Next, my absolute favorite slasher/home invasion movie of the last 20 years. (And hasTi West in a cameo role.)

Nah lol. They just created a character that happens to suit your taste in women.

On a side note, this game is doing really well with customer reviews on sites like Amazon (US/UK etc).
Just happy it's seemed to catch fire before mgs. I really want more games like this.

It's unfortunate the game released the week before Metal Gear Solid. But at least it released before Halloween so it'll be available by then. Possible price drops or sales to incentivize more sales around that period too.

As much as I love Metal Gear Solid, I'll wait for a price drop for that game even if it's a better game than Until Dawn. One of the greatest reasons I love MGS1 is the story. I never felt like the later games' stories lived up to the more grounded (relatively) story of MGS1, so I never liked them as much despite the gameplay improvements. So I'll just get MGS5 down the line. Until Dawn is more interesting to me since it's a new experience. I didn't regret it.

I am pretty ultimately disappointed in how little the story branches, and how little your choices affect everything or how the game plays out. I thought that this being a AAA title, they would be able to have huge story divergences in the way that budget-priced titles from TellTale cannot, creating lots of custom content and creating a completely different narrative based on what you do. At the end of the day though, Until Dawn is only slightly less rigid than a TellTale game.

They say the game is built with the intention to encourage multiple playthroughs, but I'm really not interested in playing the whole thing through again only to see some minor details change.

Very vague spoilers:
Only 2 characters can really die in the first 80% of the game. If you manage to keep them alive it doesn't really even matter because they end up sidelined until the very end of the game. Alive or dead, they do almost nothing to affect the storyline.
1 character cannot die early on, and he/she ends up completely sidelined until the final chapters.
The other 5 characters are pretty much invincible until the last chapter or two because killing them earlier would affect the story too profoundly. I don't think it's even possible for 2 of them to die prior to the game's final minutes.
