Upgrade to Windows 10?

I did the same thing and kept getting errors in the windows update. I had to use the taskbar icon to trigger the install.

Ended up deleting files in Windows BT and Software Distribution/Download. Reboot, it is downloading again now but this time the file size is 5422,9 mo, it was previously something like 2,2 GB before.

Argh, is there really no way to drag items from the Star Menu search directly into a doc, as in Windows 7? (and Windows 8, with Start8.)

How could they overlook that?!

One question: I have Win 8.1 Enterprise (my university gave me a key) and the upgrade message hasn't appeared. On my Win 8.1 Home computer it did.

Does that mean I can't upgrade the Enterprise one?

Well, when I try to update via media method, it downloads fine, then verifies, then goes right into Chinese menus. Have no idea why it would do that, considering I've never used any kind of Chinese setting for anything and do not speak or read the language.

I guess after the upgrade is it safe to delete "Windows.old" folder? its 16gb
and i guess is it safe to delete both "$Windows~BT" and "$Windows~WS" Folders?

All 3 folders are taking around 23gb on my SSD

Starting the installation from an ISO... Hopefully it works fine.

Yeah the upgrade is not for Enterprise.

so after i upgrade, clean install pretty much wipes all your personal data/documents correct?

Factory Reset would be a better name because it basically deletes everything and installs the OS. Think of a computer the day you buy it. That's why it's called a clean install. Clean slate to start over again on. Nothing from a previous install is kept.

If you want to keep files then just perform an upgrade. All that does is removes the old OS and puts the new one in without touching your files.

I got the prompt to update, but i wanted to make a back up recovery via USB. however I keep getting an error backing it up saying it cant read my USB. is there a particular formatted need or what? Im using a 16 gb flash drive

You cannot upgrade Enterprise through Windows Update. By definition Enterprise needs to be updated by your enterprise which provided it for you.

Nothing here in the UK (7:45am). The Get Windows app just says they'll notify me when it's ready.

You can try what I tried on the last page if you're willing. It only worked for my desktop on W8 and seemingly not for my W7 laptop, so maybe newer hardware is raking the priority and/or having Windows 8 or 7.

If you got the notify message though maybe it is just a matter of waiting. I didn't have that before I tried the steps I did then later on I got the upgrade message. Got notify message for my laptop but no upgrade message.

Anyone get itunes to work? I did a clean install after upgrade and I get error message when I tried to install.

USB install.

sorry I am a complete idiot when it comes to these things but I am currently using the link people posted to make a bootable USB with Windows 10. If I use this and do a fresh install I won't need to find my product key for my Windows 8.1 install or anything? it'll just work once installed?

I think you need to upgrade first so that your PC/product key becomes associated with a Windows 10 license. After that use the bootable USB/CD and go through the installation process. When it asks for your product key just skip it and Windows will go online to authenticate it.

At least that's how I currently understand it. Please someone correct me if wrong!

just done that and it says "Downloading Windows 10" looking good so far! thanks

Yeah its what I did. Just whether the upgrade message will pop up or not. Seems only thing to do for that is to wait. Appeared on my desktop but not on my laptop. Good luck anyway dude!

Yeah want to know this too. I wondered if it was to enable you to revert back to 7/8 if you wanted to within the month? Probably won't want to though. Espicially on the desktop which used to have 8.

It's downloading now! 33% of 5.4GB downloaded.

thanks! i'll upgrade and then do the in OS clean wipe I think then.

A lot of my windowed apps (steam, game launchers, somewhat the browser) look a bit large like it's zoomed in and it makes the resolution of my screen seem off. Is that a problem with not installing fresh or is it something windows 10 is doing (maybe to be a tablet visibility feature).

Played a game that I have borderless windowed and it was very pixely. I hit alt+enter and windowed fullscreen doesn't go to the full screen anymore but take up a corner of the screen. I may need to restart.

Edit: A lot of windowed fullscreen games seem to blow up the screen to be about 720p or something low res like that.

Awesome you have quite a lot then. Had to download 2.6GB I think. Guess only some of it went to the windows.~BT folder.
After its downloaded it'll say preparing to install for a while...then you can press notify on the 10 app. After that seems a waiting game for the upgrade message to pop up. Not sure of a way to force it.

I had the exact same problem in windows 8.1 earlier today when I hooked up my newly bought 1440p screen (going up from 1080p). It was a DPI scaling issue. It went away after restarting the PC, maybe that'll work for you as well.

Oh, do I need to wait to be notified still before I can install it? So all that's happening now is the files are downloading kinda like a pre load?

Not complaining! I'll happily wait.

Snap got a serious downgrade :( I don't like how it works now, at least in tablet mode. You can't easily change out one half of your snapped apps, you basically have to resnap every time you want to change one of them.

So I can't, say, keep twitter snapped and switch the other half between other things at will, I have to resnap every time I want to change one of the apps. Not cool.

edit: Also, a small annoyance, but it seems like the background for my login screen is just the default wallpaper, and I can't find a way to change it. Anyone else getting this?

Yeah seems so. Just the same things happened on my desktop and laptop. Desktop got the message shortly after preparing to install message was done, and laptop didn't. Left my laptop on so will see if it got the message when I get back. (Which is like 7 hours away ha ha), just didn't get the message within the hour and a half I had before I had to go.

Pretty sure I read you need the key if you dont upgrade first.
