Upgrade to Windows 10?

Sweet. All I had to do in the end was buy Windows 10 from Dreamspark (100% discount, ty based University) and put in the new key and it was accepted. No need to fuss around with reinstalls, thank god. For anyone wondering, I can confirm that the "Multiple Editions" key is a Win10 Pro key.

Based university indeed. Pro version, I assume?

So if you have a Windows 8 key, will that key be usable for fresh Windows 10 installations from ISO's only after you did the upgrade within a year? Or does it check with your Microsoft account?

Just be sure NOT to update using the Windows Update driver, iirc.

It's able to be turned off in the settings

I heard that in preview builds you couldnt disable certain driver updates without a special workaround tool. User is forced to take all windows updates. Is that different in the release version? Can you easily disable automatic update of those kinds of drivers?

Going to ask this again so I can get this resolved.

Alright. I need some help here TechGAF. I started the installation process around 7:30 AM. It's now 11:55 AM. At first everything was going fine. The process was at 15% when my screen went blank, but was still lit up. I've tried forcing it off, then turning it back on, but that doesn't help. It still lets me access the standard Windows boot screen if that can help me out. Anyways, after it loads past the boot screen is when it continues to hang on a dimly lit empty screen. I guess Black Screen of Death?

I can only tell you that my screen went black for a few minutes several times in the process of upgrading and I just let it continue and had no problems. How long did the screen stay black?

When I had Windows 7 installed before switching to Windows 10 Tech Preview, I had the Get Win 10 app, and reserved. Then I installed Win 10 TP and enjoyed it. So I wanted to actually do my upgrade process, so I wiped Win 10 TP and reinstalled Win 7. So now I've installed Win 7, updated everything, and no Get Win 10 app. Anything I can do to force the app to show up in my taskbar?

Haha, and Microsoft seems to have relocated or removed the Q&A page for the Win10 upgrade, so I can't even read up on it.

Two questions:

1. Is it true you can't disable Windows Updates with Windows 10 and are forced to install them? http://www.cnet.com/news/windows-10-home-edition-may-force-updates/

2. How is the Edge browser? Any adblock options?

1: Yes you have to take updates on windows 10. This is in order to keep computer secure and that when Microsoft updates the os developers know everyone will have the update. If you have a bad driver or update there is a utility to block it. If you have pro you can block feature updates but not security updates

2. Edge is excellent and competitive to chrome and firefox in speed tests. Right now there is no extension support...it is coming in the fall...so no adblock options until then

Someone knows why the windows store is a piece of crap? Half the time I'm trying to do something it tells me I'm not connected to the internet, and apparently it's always thinking my monitor is 4 times larger than it is.

Image is always cropped, even in games

Update is now available (Italy) but personally I can't get to the license activation page at the beginning, it seems servers are under assault.

It just stays black for a long time. Does the fact I have quite a few large steam games occuping storage space have anything to do with it? This just occurred to me, but I have no idea to be honest.

Damnit, I was wondering why I didn't get the Windows 10 app thingy.

Looks like I have 8.1 Enterprise. Which is not supported for the Windows 10 upgrade.
F* this.

Yes.

Just do Win + G in whatever you want. The Game Bar will then pop up, asking if this is a game. Just select Yes, and you can use all of the DVR and screenshot features.

It doesn't even need to be a game. You can do this in any app as well, which is great because you can do screen recording of anything without needing third party programs.

I've only got this working on borderless-window games, unless I messed something up?

Can I simply take Win8.1Pro key, do a clean install of Win10, insert that key when prompted and get Win10 license?

No...system needs to convert that key into a windows 10 key and that is done through the upgrade...it is then saved to your Microsoft account...so If you reinstall win 10 clean it will reactivate when you sign in

Huh, it refused to activate for me until I put the key in.

Maybe putting the key in forced it to recheck or something...?

behind the scenes it gives you a new key? first ive heard that today (not saying its not true)

where exactly was I supposed to get that?

Okay, further research shows that everyone has the same key. So yeah, try putting VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T in as a key. Not sure if it's different for the different versions, but that's what people have for Windows 10 Pro.

So I was wrong initially. Sorry!

You should only have enterprise if you are a volume license customer...there is no reason you would have it legitimately on a personal computer

So it won't activate without the volume license customer key

So from this point forward does it make more sense to go with classic installation of programs or apps? I'm assuming apps are similar to how they are on phones where they update in the background automatically?

Upgraded and lost sound. Drivers look fine and the sound playback devices show that sound is being played, but I hear nothing!

Any help?
Realtek? install the latest driver and then continue to switch around the input until it works. that's what apparently fixes it according to a friend.

also keep in mind the realtek installation takes multiple reboots. idk why but yeah.

What the hell. My windows was installing at like 25 percent, restarted and then carried on till about 35 percent and now I just have a black screen and no progress bar?!?! I knew it would restart as it pre warns you of several abrupt restarts but black screen for 20 mins? Didn't warn me about that!

Edit: thank fuck it's came back! 75 percent. Was about to cry lol

Yup realtek. This worked, thanks!

...so, I installed Windows 10, then had to reset the OS again afterwards to get everything back to working order. Somewhere in the process, all my personal files in my Windows.old folder disappeared.

Am I fucked?

Yes indeed. Though they listed it as "Multiple Editions" which confused me at first but the key activated my current 10 Pro install.

I wonder if it gives you a choice between Home and Pro or something.. Oddly named for sure.

Oh well whatever, now I won't have to stress about upgrading and installing on another SSD.

Is 10.0.10240.16384 the FINAL build just want to be sure..turns out I downloaded that KB3074683 days ago but my version is still 16384 and in advanced options of update and security it talks about the insider build just want to be sure I have the final version

Should I delete my Windows.old folder? Seems to eating up about 15-20 gigs. Thanks.

P.S. I'm assuming this folder is here as a just in case.

It's there so you can revert back to previous Windows, but if you are fine with 10, search for disk cleanup and it can remove old Windows install, download update system files and etc.

Well f*ck. That's why I can't upgrade. Looks like I'm buying a key instead.

... Somehow I completely wiped my history of downloaded updates and I can't view any recent attempts or updates either.

I have no idea. I'm close to giving up.

I'm going to try giving the command prompt thing another shot. It seems like the files downloaded themselves onto my computer again.

Can I not just run the "setup" file that's in the Windows BT folder?

Updated, everything seems ok :)

Where can i find the install files/ISO if i want to make a DVD/USB and do a clean install later?

Can anyone tell me how to get the search box back into the start menu. I've seen screenshots online of people having it, but for the life of me I can't figure out how to get it back.

Edit: So you can get it to appear in the taskbar, but only if you don't use small taskbar icons, gross.

Hey I saw your message sorry I didn't respond. Yeah if you use small you only have the option of the button. If you use regular you can right click and go into the Cortana menu and choose button or box...honestly it doesn't matter much. if you hit start button you can start typing no matter what and it will work. You can also turn it off entirely on both which is what I do because I only enter the dialog with the start button

Well, duh. If you're on an Enterprise build, which is only for enterprises, then it's the job of your enterprise to update you. They wouldn't want their entire workforce to update without the IT teams having complete control and handling it themselves.

Did you take an Enterprise key from work and use that at home or something? Or use MSDN key?

I am so done with this shit. It is just one explainable error after another. After finally actually being able to download the ISO properly, now the installation is hanging at 6% then punting me back to Windows 7.

Any genius could've seen that this rollout was gonna be a disaster.

My Laptop got the upgrade early at 1 am but my desktop still ain't have it and all it says is We're validating Windows 10 for your PC, we're continuously working with our partners to ensure that even more PCs work well with Windows 10....
