US PSN: Golden Week Sale Celebrates Japanese Games

Can someone briefly explain what the main differences are between the numerous Atelier games? I have no idea which one to try first, or if it even matters.

I wish they offered more of the older Y's games. Been waiting on those to go on sale for awhile now.

They went on sale a few months ago around the time the newest one came out. I picked up Ys I & II, Ys 7, and Ys Oath for around $21 total. Haven't seen it on sale since.

Man, Muramasa is at impulse-purchase levels but that game stinks of become a PSN+ game in the near future. Gonna hold off for now. I'm all over MGSHD vita, Tales, and the Chrono games, though.

bad gameplay lol
Amazing timing for Soulcalibur V to go on sale. Only a week after that buggy F2P piece of crap Lost Swords was released. I wonder how many people will just buy V and drop Lost Swords.

Totori is Atelier PS3 2. Meruru is Atelier PS3 3, and Ayesha is Atelier PS3 4.

Btw are the atlier games dubbed or all of them JP voices with Eng text?

while i have the JP versions, that price is tempting to pick up the US ones too depending.

Chrono Cross for the PS1 is the best version of Chrono Cross given that it's the only version.

I'm not a fan but some people love the game. Be warned; it's nothing like Chrono Trigger.

Awesome, didn't realize there were no other versions. I haven't even played my copy of Trigger yet so I have literally zero expectations. Should be interesting!

Totori and Meruru have both English and Japanese VA. Ayesha only has English VA.

UK here, but if I buy a PSN voucher over at the American branch of Amazon, I can use that code in the US store, right? 'Cos I am totally going to get myself Chrono Cross at that price.

Ugh... I need a 64gb memory card :(
These deals are way too good to pass on.
Especially Ys, I've wanted to try that game for a while now.

Thinking of grabbing Chrono Cross. Playing FFIX on my Vita has been super fun.

How are those Atelier games and in what order do they go?

There's two trilogies on PS3/PSV: the Arland trilogy is Rorona, Totori, and Meruru. The Dusk trilogy is Ayesha, Escha & Logy, and Shallie. You don't have to play them in order, though, or play them all. The links are very loose.

I'm wondering the same thing. How r the control on vita? I have no intention of using ds3 anymore

I thought the controls for Peace Walker on Vita were awful. I only played it for an hour or so. I think I'm going to buy the collection on PS3 and try again.

GAF will tell you to just buy it, and I'd agree, but what turns you off from most JRPGs? Persona is pretty unique in terms of JRPGs but it is heavily Japanese, of course.

Well, I said I've enjoyed Dragon Quest and that's mainly due to charm, nostalgia, and the simplicity of it's battle system. Timed or overly complicated battle systems where I have figure out how to build up "limit breaks", manage a menagerie of monsters, or some other nonsense in order to do any real damage is a big turn-off, as-is games where I have to do a lot of grinding before I can proceed. I despise crafting as a game mechanic so if it's practically required to finish the game then I'm out. Yes, DQ has crafting and monster management but these are totally optional and not required to progress in the game.

Pretty sure you can.

You need to create a US account though.

Thanks. I have a US account set up already, so that won't be a problem.

Yeah that's what I'm planning on doing too. Trigger and Cross.

I want to play Chrono Trigger as well (which is actually available to play over here!), but I never hear good things about the Playstation version. Still, at that price, I think I can forgive it being a shitty port.

Totori is the second game of the Arland trilogy and Meruru is the third. They are individual stories but many characters come back, so it's nice to see how they change after a few years. Rorona is the first game of the trilogy but it's not required in any way to play it before the other two. Meruru on the other hand has many characters coming back and also has a spoiler of Totori's true end, so it's usually a good idea to play Totori first.

Ayesha is the first game of the Dusk trilogy and a plus version has been released for the Vita in Japan, no word on localization but it will probably come. Escha & Logy is the second and has been released last month for the PS3.

Guys, has MGS HD Collection made available for PS+ in US? I would bite at that price, even if i have already finished them, but i don't wanna see them appear in a future PS+ lineup. I am sure they were free on PS+, either in US or EU.

Ahh! I don't mind buying a game for full price, playing it, and seeing it go on sale later, but I bought Muramasa for full price last weekend and haven't gotten to it yet, so now it feels bad! Also bought Danganronpa but that one didn't get as big a drop I guess, and I have already played it a bunch. God and I bought Chrono Trigger last weekend too.

Oh well, in my anger I shall give them more money, and pick up most of what I don't have already from this list.

You know, i think its time i finally play Chrono Cross. I know its a great game, i was just a bit turned off years ago as i expected a sequel to Trigger. I regret never giving it the time it deserves.

Also totally in for Tales of Chronicles. Even though i never really played Xillia when grabbing it on sale.

What, no WayForward games this time, lol?

Tempted to buy Time and Eternity out of morbid curiosity... But maybe 9.79 is still too expensive??

I am on Tales and Crono Cross like a fat kid on smarties. I can't pass at those prices regardless of whether I want a physical copy or not.

As hard as I have gone digital here's to hoping Sony doesn't fuck up these historical catalogs or go under and we lose access to all of this stuff.

Oh, okay. Yeah, buy Persona 4. You can adjust the difficulty if you want (I'm playing on normal because Persona 3 kicked my ass and I don't have to grind much at all on P4). The battle system is simple turn-based (you can have the AI control all the other characters, or control them yourself), and the most 'complicated' the battle system gets is finding enemy weaknesses and exploiting them. As someone mentioned before, it's more a dungeon crawler with social-simulation elements.

I think you'd enjoy it. Plus, it's one of the most well-written RPGs I've played in years; has a spot-on translation with excellent writing and subtlety (no "THE POWER OF FRIENDSHIP!!!!!!!" lines being thrown at you), and the story is broken up in a way that is pretty easy to follow.

The closest thing to 'crafting' is selling materials from enemies you fight normally to the blacksmith so he can make weapons. Sell him one of something and he's all "OH YEAH I CAN MAKE THIS ARMOR NOW!" and then you can buy it.
