(US Release) Donkey Kong Jungle Beat Thread

Speevy--I'd make one myself right now, but my capture card is very crummy. I might be picking up a new one within the week so I might make a video later if one doesn't show up in the mean time.

Some people were talking about high scores, so here's a start. Feel free to add your own scores, just cut & paste replacing the existing score with your high score.

Don't laugh at my weaksauce!

I've heard the game is easy, but I'm wondering how easy... it's not a bad thing. I'm actually wondering because my wife might like the game, but if it's too tough she might find it frustrating. She's worse than a kid when it comes to giving up on games.

Seems like it's sort of a combo between Sonic and Nights or something... played a demo the other day, and it was a fun time...

For a newbie, it depends on their coordination. My girlfriend is rather poor with the ol' hand-eye, but she still enjoys Jungle Beat. That said, flying and swimming take some skills beyond just learning to play with the bongos. I don't know if my girlfriend had trouble with those parts, but her younger brother (15 yrs. old) had trouble with them, and he's a lot better at games than my girlfriend.

It won't be tough for her. The toughness comes from trying to beat your high scores and getting the higher medals.

This is one of the most rewarding games I've played in a whle. It only getting better.

Any luck on the video ge-man?

Not much actually. I tried to make a video a couple of days ago with my current capture card (it's not really that bad). The software it came with has issue, however (I've done plenty of upgrades since I got the card). Give me a few more days to sort that out.

I finally got it... I can't believe how fun it is...

I already got all the golden medals (or whatever their names are) in the first 2 barrels, I'm in the J barrel right now... How many levels are in the game? What do I need to do to unlock the secret ones?

One thing... my arms feel tired, my hands are hurting, OMG... the pain... all that clapping... but still, freaking fun...

18 worlds

Just get more and more crests.

Don't forget to get the platinum crests (1200 beats)

and I recommend tapping the side of the bongos instead of clapping. :)

HELL YES! Just got 2737 beats in Pineapple Kingdom!!! Both levels in that can be done in one huge combo for each, man that feels awesome!

Pineapple Kingdom and Banana Kingdom are the only ones ive tried really hard to maximize my beats, but i'll post a bunch of high scores.

Banana Kingdom - 2032
Orange Kingdom - 1278
Watermelon Kingdom - 1454
Apple Kingdom - 1218

Strawberry Kingdom - 1427
Pineapple Kingdom - 2737
Lemon Kingdom - 869
Grape Kingdom - 807

Haven't really fully explored those last two there yet, or the other 8 levels, but I can't wait to! This game is so awesome, and it's long too if you're like me and want to see everything in every area and maximize your potential points and combos. I've probably put over 50 hours into it now. Best game ever!

Bah.

Pineapple Kingdom.

Second level (first underwater level in the game)

975 beats.

350 beat combo.

Before it's finished, I bump into the electric jellyfish, resetting my combo meter, and losing the 350 beat combo which had yet to be added to my total.

asdfasdfasdfasfasdfadsfadfasdf

I suck at the game (haven't devoted enough time to it), but I absolutely love it. This is now in my top 5 games of all time.

Not good enough! :P

Did you get a 10 combo on the first stage and a 7 (might have been 6..) combo on the second one? Another tip, try and avoid getting bananas that you see at the beginning at first and come back to then when you have done some combos, if you can. :)

that's what I'm doing.

2500 is probably the theoretical limit, I bet.

And no, I only got a 9 combo at the first. Only think I got a 5 on the second. But I did skip the bananas at the begining. :)

Have you learned how to do that strange small hop from a corner? I can kind of do that now, you just sort of jump passed a corner and jump again when you're right on it, I finally figured it out after doing it by accident a few times. You can add 1 to your combo by doing that in both levels, on the first one it's right at the start before you bounce on the flower, and on the second one you start your combo with it on that little island thingy with the platform you can reach to the far right above the water, and try not to get any bananas before you get there.

There's a few other things i've done accidently to add to my combo that I still haven't figured out, like once I did something where I hit the roof and it added to my combo, and once I did a weird jump that looked like a long.. spin.. jump.. thing.

Yeah I've learned the hop. It's just really hard to do in the first stage of Pineapple Kingdom. :|

I don't know about hitting the roof, but I think the long jump thing is only possible on the ice stages.

If I had a NGC this game would be mine, it looks like it captures some of the essence of Punch-Out with crazy platforming goodness. It seriously looks like on of those games that has crazy replay value just based on it being so fun (like Punch-Out). The fact that Revo is BC might make me pick one up, along with Zelda this year...I'm pretty sure I can get a NGC for $60 at my local VG shop. Hmm, decisions, decisions.

I've got some Q's, how long is this game till completion? Is there incentive for replaying the game? Also, is there a mode to fight consecutive boss battles? Are the boss battles hard/pattern based like in Punch-Out. Last Q, do you guys see yourselves going back to this game in the future? Does it seem like a game that could bring you back numerous times (like Punch-Out).

Just got this today. Makes me remember just how much I love Nintendo sometimes. This is easily one of my favorite Cube games. It has that old school goodness that makes you play again and again. A+

Bring on Jungle Beat 2 (with multiplayer!) :D

Well you've answered my post without even looking at it. Sigh, more money to spend. I really want to play this!

It's a good thing used GC's a dirt cheap, might wait a bit more though.

eh, I really can't say how long it takes to complete. I've spent like 12 hours on it total so far (goofing around and being serious in getting crests). I have 27/72 crests.

No, there is not a boss battle mode.

The bosses fight in patters (like in every game) but the only ones I'd really compare to the pattern based fights of punchout are the gorilla boss fights, which play just like a punchout game. And the battles are not hard, really.

yes, I do see myself playing through this game over and over again.

Found a way to incorporate the backflip into the second level and got 3093 beats!! :D

I'd say the "limit" for Pineapple Kingdom is 3500.

YES I do see myself coming back to this game all the time! It really is that damn fun, there's so many different ways you can do things, it'll take forever to fully explore each level and figure out the best way to maximize your score.

I need to get back to this. Fire Emblem is keeping away from it, however. I determine to finish the goddamn thing so at the moment I'm putting other games on hold.

Chili Pepper Kingdom - 3300 beats

I need to keep working at it though. Sometimes I am way to conservative and end my combos on the spot to keep from losing all of the beats I have accumulated. Damn, I love this game.

Holy shit, fuck you bitches (just read through the whole thread). NGC rebought, ugh.

I need to play this, Paper Mario 2 and Zelda. Going to get a NGC at some point, might as well make it now.

Edit: after watching the vids at IGN, holy-fucking-shit, now this is the Nintendo I know and love. More crazy fun platforming gameplay Ninty, kthxbye.

Pedigree Chum, if you do decide to pick up a GC, do not forget about Resident Evil 4.

My friend has it, probably just going to borrow it. Can't wait to play this, looks right up my alley. I'm going to waste many hours trying to make one huge combo through levels (that is possible right?).

Cool.

And yeah, some of the levels can be one big combo. :) So much fun.

I have a feeling this is going to rekindle my love for Nintendo, I miss the day of just straight up platforming goodness from Nintendo. And when it looks this good, and this fun, I guess it was worth the wait. I just hope that Nintendo doesn't waste another 3 years before giving us an equaly appealing platform game. This is the genre I grew up loving, and throughout this gen its been pretty crap (save GBA remakes), decent offerings from all, but nothing that truly stands out and says "this will be a classic for the ages". I'm really hoping I get that feeling from this title, even if it's a little bit.

*PC very desperate for an amazing platformer*

Going hand-in-hand with that is what we believe is the most intriguing and ultimately rewarding part of the game: its combo system. The combos separate the men from the boys, or maybe it's the apes from the monkeys. As Kong makes his way through levels, you can intuitively link together moves in order to multiply your beat count. You might, for instance, jump into the air, grab out for a number of beats, catch onto a vine and swing forward, bounce off two walls, collect more beats, jump back into the air and latch onto a bird, fly it across the screen, jump to another vine, grab more bananas, and keep going. The bigger combo you can string together, the more beats you gain, and the level of satisfaction earned after you've strung a major set of moves together is immeasurable. It is the primary reason why you will continue to play Jungle Beat, even after you've nabbed all the medals.

*drools*

Haha, I just realized that it's the same price for a used Gamecube system as it is for the game + bongos. Damn. But it'll all come up to $120+tax in the end :(

I wish there was a cheaper way to go about this.

There's always stealing.

Wait, I have an idea. The other day I bought XIII, FFCC, and a $5 PS2 game from EB. Cost me $19. Sold 'em at Game Rush and got $29, for a nice $10 profit. If you do that twice, you could get the game + bongos for roughly $20 less.

Using LA the local tax, a new GC + DKJB w/ bongos = $173.18. You'd have to do the same thing about 6 times, but you'd save about $60 overall.

In fact, it'd only cost $116.72, including tax.

Hmm...

Don't live in America, that kinda shit is insanely hard to pull off here in Canada since we don't have lots of electronics stores that sell games at $5. For us, a deal is getting a game for $5 off MSRP :/

Oh, sorry then. Maybe you could get an American pal to get you in on this sca- I mean deal. :)
